In my experience it is critical to share with each other if you are taking notes either on paper or on a tablet/computer. It is critical to set the "ground rules" and expectations before you begin. Without the explicit mention of this it can cause the participants to wonder about changing eye contact etc. If you need to remind the other person, just say ... I would like to take a note and write that down so if I look away, I will be taking notes.

Do you have a pile of dirty clothes in the back? Fail. A remote interview is still an interview, bring the energy and be concise and clear. This is a formal interview, treat it as such.

Small talk can really help break the ice, if you notice they are nervous, ask them a question abou themselves to get them talking. Let them take their time. Give them time to think about what they need to say, if there are long silences, ask them if they need the question rephrased - don't assume they don't know what to say. Reassure them throughout that they are doing great, and it's normal to feel anxiety and that the interview is a safe space.

A clear protocol means knowing when and how to follow up—whether via email, call, or message—and what key points to reiterate or clarify.
