Gina Prince-Bythewood has signed on to direct The Old Guard, Skydance’s adaptation of the comic from author Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez.
Prince-Bythewood remains attached to direct Spider-Man spinoff Silver and Black but as that project remains stuck in development, the director hopped on the fast-moving Old Guard. Both projects are female-led action dramas.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce the project, which hopes to shoot this fall in time for a release in 2019.
Old Guard tells of a small group of soldiers, led by a woman named Andy, who are inexplicably immortal and have been working as mercenaries through the ages. The novelty of not dying long gone, the group gets a jolt in their bones when they discover the existence of a new immortal, a black woman serving in the Marines, at the same time as a nefarious organization captures their undying actions on camera.
Prince-Bythewood is known for dramas such as The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond The Lights. She also directed the pilot and other episodes of Cloak & Dagger and the special event series Shots Fired, which examined the dangerous aftermath of two racially charged shootings in a small Southern town. She is repped by CAA and Del Shaw.
Omega Underground first reported the news.
