Cloud Computing - IBM Creates Cloud Box

IBM claims to have created new species of custom-built, industry-standard, Linux-based rack server for Web 2.0 and Cloud Computing companies with massive data centers and tens of thousands of servers, like online gaming, social networks, search and Internet firms. A relatively limited marketplace of maybe a thousand companies with fat wallets capable of shelling out tens of millions for such system. IBM means to replace the white boxes they use now or build themselves like Google does. It says it’s got a few hundred early adopters and potential customers in China, Germany, Japan, the UK and America, including Yahoo and Texas Tech, which is thinking of using it for a HPC center. WinterGreen Research puts the market at $10 billion. IBM calls the thing iDataPlex and leverages its blade server widgetry to build what it calls a “completely new design point.&rdq...; (more)

Cumulux to Present at SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Expo

As Cloud Computing goes mainstream, platform vendors are rapidly filling out the landscape with offerings at various tiers including Infrastructure, Platform, Storage, Applications etc. Microsoft's Azure platform  is one of the most complete one as it covers a broad set of capabilities. In this session, Ramakrishnan will explore how Enterprises can create applications that take advantage of Windows Azure's computational capabilities and how Enterprises can use .NET Services to bridge cloud applications and on Premise applications. These concepts will be illustrated by a live demo which will show a Cloud based Mobility application that delivers Enterprise content  to mobile phones. Speaker B... (more)

Gartner's Cloud Computing Advice to CIOs for 2009

Sam Charrington's Blog Cloud computing figures prominently in recently released Gartner report entitled "CIO New Year’s Resolutions, 2009." Gartner’s overall advice to the CIO is to do what is necessary to survive in ‘09, but to be sure to also invest in the future by building and preparing for what lies beyond. In a report issued Monday entitled CIO New Year’s Resolutions, 2009 (subscription required), Gartner analysts Mark Raskino, John Mahoney and Patrick Meehan outline 10 tactics that will help CIO’s “survive in 2009,” and put them “ahead of the crowd.” Given the state of the global economy, and the fear, uncertainty and doubt this creates for CIOs and IT organizations in general, this year’s set of resolutions takes a very future-oriented tack: Gartner’s advice to the CIO is to do what is necessary to survive in ‘09, but to be sure to also invest in the future ... Recession Survival Kit: Adopt Cloud Computing

Two days before the single largest drop in the history of the stock market, Jason Calacanis - former Weblogs Inc. co-founder (and GM of Netscape) - wrote a lengthy blog post aimed at inspiring folks at startup companies "to get focused and to save as many as possible from hitting the wall." As Calacanis reminded readers of his blog, "Great entrepreneurs build value and market-share in down markets." We recently asked a selection of the industry's brightest minds what their own advice would be in these troubled times, and assembled it into a ten-point guide for software vendors, entrepreneurs, and startups to riding out a recession. Tip #1: Prioritize Harvesting Existing Assets and Opportunities This comes from the Jeremy Chone, CTO of Nexaweb Technologies, a VC-funded software provider that offers the industry’s most comprehensive application platform for mission-crit... Solving the Problem of Cloud Interoperability

Reuven Cohen's "Elastic Vapor" Blog In the next few years the a key opportunity for the emerging cloud industry will be on defining a federated cloud ecosystem by connecting multiple cloud computing providers using an agreeing upon standard or interface. There are a number of organizations looking into solving the problem of cloud federation. A fundamental challenge in creating and managing a globally decentralized cloud computing environment is that of maintaining consistent connectivity between various untrusted components that are capable of self-organization while remaining fault tolerant. In the next few years the a key opportunity for the emerging cloud industry will be on defining a federated cloud ecosystem by connecting multiple cloud computing providers using an agreeing upon standard or interface. In this post I will examine some of work being done in cloud... (more)

Cisco Introduces Unified Computing

Some of the biggest news in computing lately has been coming out of Cisco. Cisco's latest strategy appears to be to causing mass disruption and from what I can tell they're doing all the right things.. According to a recent post by Cisco CTO Padmasree Warrior says Cisco "views periods of economic uncertainty as the perfect time to challenge the status quo and evolve our business to deliver customer and shareholder value. Cisco’s success has always been driven by investments in market adjacencies during times that may cause other companies to blink." Guess I'm not the only one promoting a unified cloud interface. Cisco is calling there's “Unified Computing”. In the post they describe Unified Computing as the advancement toward the next generation data center that links all resources together in a common architecture to reduce the barrier to entry for data center virtua... CloudEXPO Stories
Kubernetes as a Container Platform is becoming a de facto for every enterprise. In my interactions with enterprises adopting container platform, I come across common questions: - How does application security work on this platform? What all do I need to secure? - How do I implement security in pipelines? - What about vulnerabilities discovered at a later point in time? - What are newer technologies like Istio Service Mesh bring to table? In this session, I will be addressing these commonly asked questions that every enterprise trying to adopt an Enterprise Kubernetes Platform needs to know so that they can make informed decisions.
The use of containers by developers -- and now increasingly IT operators -- has grown from infatuation to deep and abiding love. But as with any long-term affair, the honeymoon soon leads to needing to live well together ... and maybe even getting some relationship help along the way. And so it goes with container orchestration and automation solutions, which are rapidly emerging as the means to maintain the bliss between rapid container adoption and broad container use among multiple cloud hosts. This BriefingsDirect cloud services maturity discussion focuses on new ways to gain container orchestration, to better use serverless computing models, and employ inclusive management to keep the container love alive.
Today most companies are adopting or evaluating container technology - Docker in particular - to speed up application deployment, drive down cost, ease management and make application delivery more flexible overall. As with most new architectures, this dream takes significant work to become a reality. Even when you do get your application componentized enough and packaged properly, there are still challenges for DevOps teams to making the shift to continuous delivery and achieving that reduction in cost and increase in speed. Sometimes in order to reduce complexity teams compromise features or change requirements
Here to help unpack insights into the new era of using containers to gain ease with multi-cloud deployments are our panelists: Matt Baldwin, Founder and CEO at StackPointCloud, based in Seattle; Nic Jackson, Developer Advocate at HashiCorp, based in San Francisco, and Reynold Harbin, Director of Product Marketing at DigitalOcean, based in New York. The discussion is moderated by Dana Gardner, principal analyst at Interarbor Solutions.
As you know, enterprise IT conversation over the past year have often centered upon the open-source Kubernetes container orchestration system. In fact, Kubernetes has emerged as the key technology -- and even primary platform -- of cloud migrations for a wide variety of organizations. Kubernetes is critical to forward-looking enterprises that continue to push their IT infrastructures toward maximum functionality, scalability, and flexibility. As they do so, IT professionals are also embracing the reality of Serverless architectures, which are critical to developing and operating real-time applications and services. Serverless is particularly important as enterprises of all sizes develop and deploy Internet of Things (IoT) initiatives.
