Few areas of human endeavor can match the pace of change in IT. Even by IT
standards, the change being driven by cloud computing sometimes seems
surprising. To refer to a virtual environment that has only recently been
deployed as "legacy," as some organizations are now doing, underscores the
fact that the only thing constant in the data center is change. To deal with
change of this magnitude, which can involve transforming the workload hosting
model of an entire organization, some industrial-strength thinking is
required.
In order to tackle this challenge, it's important to properly frame the cloud
transformation problem. Many associate cloud with agility, flexibility, cost
transparency and other end-user-oriented benefits. But many of these
attributes are primarily associated with new infrastructure requests, and
specifically, the use of self-service portals to "... (more)
David Linthicum, newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of SYS-CON's Virtualization
Journal, will be presenting at the 2nd International Cloud Computing
Conference & Expo in New York City this coming March 30-April 1, 2009.
Linthicum, an internationally known technology expert and a sought-after
consultant, speaker and writer, will be giving a not-to-be-missed session on
"Winning with Cloud Computing" - a candid and hype-less look what it takes to
be successful with cloud computing within the traditional enterprise. "Those
that think that cloud computing is quick and easy to implement have not yet
begun a migration to the cloud," says Linthicum, adding:
"There is much to think about, including the business case for migrating core
business processes and information to cloud computing providers, and the
process to get there without disrupting the business. Indeed, there's muc... (more)

Quick quiz!
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the following
phrases?
Artificial grass Artificial sweeteners Artificial flavors Artificial plants
Artificial flowers Artificial diamonds and jewelry Artificial (fake) news
These phrases probably evoke thoughts such as “fake,” “not real,” or
even “shabby.” Artificial is such a harsh adjective. The word
“artificial” is defined as “imitation; simulated; sham” with synonyms
such as fake, false, mock, counterfeit, bogus, phony and factitious.
The word “artificial” may not be the right term to use to describe
“Artificial Intelligence,” because “artificial intelligence” is
anything but fake, false, phony, or a sham. Maybe a better term is
“Augmented Human Intelligence,” or a phrase that highlights both the
importance of augmenting the human’s intelligence as well as to alleviate
the fears that AI means ... (more)

Okay there are thousands of rich internet applications (RIAs) out there that
I could write about but I’m trying to be very selective in order to
provide a good sampling of different uses of RIAs and their advantages. Being
pretty is one thing, but being incredibly functional is what makes RIAs
exciting.
One key advantage to this type of document creation is the collaboration
features. For example, multiple people can create, comment on and revise
documents. Everyone works with the same version of the document so you avoid
the error-prone emailing back and forth of files.
Buzzword is in preview mode and is free for all to use. It was recently
acquired by Adobe so many cool changes are coming. Also, a version for AIR
(Adobe Integrated Runtime) is in the works so you will will have the option
of the same functionality in a desktop version.

Larry Ellison recently unleashed a tub-thumping tirade against cloud
computing covered by Ben Worthen (with further comments from Daya Baran, Giva
Perry and Dan Farber) . Here is a quote from Larry:
The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we've redefined cloud
computing to include everything that we already do. I can't think of anything
that isn't cloud computing... The computer industry is the only industry that
is more fashion-driven than women's fashion.
Now as usual with big whoppers told by people in fear of their checkbooks,
Larry's rant has an element of truth. There is much cloud lipstick being
sloshed on many a barnyard animal these days. But behind all the buzzwords, a
basic shift is occuring - the wholesale outsourcing of core business
applications.
Yes, this is a return to timesharing, but this ain't your grandfather's
timesharing. It is inter... (more)
Amazon Web Services LLC (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, has launched a
public beta of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) running Microsoft
Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server, providing flexibility for deploying
solutions in the AWS cloud. In addition, AWS announced that Amazon EC2 is now
generally available and now offers a Service Level Agreement (SLA). Launched
in beta in August of 2006, Amazon EC2 is an AWS service that provides
resizable compute capacity in the cloud for businesses and developers.
Customers can now employ Amazon EC2 running Windows Server or SQL Server.
Windows with Amazon EC2 has been a common request of AWS customers since the
service launched. Amazon EC2 now provides an environment for deploying
ASP.NET web sites, high-performance computing clusters, media transcoding
solutions, and many other Windows-based applications.

Building the right infrastructure that can scale up or down at a moment's
notice can be a complicated and expensive task, but it's essential in today's
business landscape. This applies to an enterprise trying to cut-costs, a
young business unexpectedly saturated with customer demand, or a start-up
looking to launch.
There are many challenges when building a reliable, flexible architecture
that can manage unpre... (more)

One thing is pretty clear to me from an investment perspective. I am not
going to invest in the next hot cloud computing infrastructure service that
will compete against Amazon, Rackspace, Microsoft, and every other large tech
vendor in the world. This is suicide and far from capital efficient.
Cloud this, Cloud that - the word cloud is clearly an overhyped word and
reminds me of the beginning of the hype around hosted models and ASPs
(application service providers) in the late 90s and the term SAAS today.
Anyway, as I look at announcement after announcement released about cloud
computing platforms, one thing is pretty clear to me from an investment
perspective. First, I am not going to invest in the next hot cloud
computing infrastructure service that will compete against Amazon, Rackspace,
Microsoft, and every other large tech vendor in the ... (more)
