For enterprises to maintain business competitiveness in the digital economy,
IT modernization is required. And cloud, with its on-demand, elastic and
scalable principles has resoundingly been identified as the infrastructure
model capable of supporting fast-changing business requirements that
enterprises are challenged with, as a result of our increasingly connected
world. In fact, Gartner states that by 2022, 28% of enterprise IT spending
will have shifted to cloud. But enterprises still must determine which clouds
are best suited for each application, in order to achieve IT governance,
while accounting for complex data privacy requirements. It's safe to say that
enterprises know their future looks cloudy, and that this infrastructure will
soon become a mix of multi, hybrid, and on-pre... (more)

Cloud-Native thinking and Serverless Computing are now the norm in financial
services, manufacturing, telco, healthcare, transportation, energy, media,
entertainment, retail and other consumer industries, as well as the public
sector.
The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
DevOpsSUMMIT at CloudEXPO expands the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing
of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike.

Well, if the economy – and not just software, mind you – is going from
products to services and perforce subscriptions then vendors are going to
need an appropriate billing system that chases down and captures all the
monthly payments, right?
Well, that’s what a couple of lads out of the on-demand school thought too
and that’s why they started Zuora Inc on Marc Benioff and Benchmark
Capital’s combined nickel.
Yes, that Marc Benioff, the CEO of salesforce.com, the software-as-a-service
pioneer, who got his initial stake from his old boss Larry Ellison.
He kicked in on Zuora’s $6.5 million A round in December and Zuora is
growing up in Oracle’s shadow. Literally. When you look out its windows in
Redwood City, California all you see in the looming presence of Oracle.
Zuora, lest you think the word comes from some exotic language and is fraught
with meaning, is simply t... (more)
"It's a chance for Cisco to participate on a bigger scale, helping to bring
peace to the world. Is that too big a dream?...(long pause)...Maybe." With
that thought Cisco CEO John Chambers ends an interview published this week by
BusinessWeek in which he reveals that Cisco's cloud computing ambitions are
nothing compared to its terrestrial goal, which is "to become the best
company in the world, and the best company for the world."
Speaking with BW's Peter Burrows, Chambers explains Cisco's activities
vis-a-vis emerging markets such as China, India, and the Middle East. And he
mentions how King Abdullah of Jordan personally reached out to him saying
"John, you'll make a lot of money in Jordan and the Middle East."
You can read the interview in full here.

initiatives. David Bernstein, whose team runs Cis... (more)

Are humans really necessary for maintaining SLAs? In today's cloud computing
deployments, especially with systems like Amazon's EC2, the users'
application is responsible for both measuring and taking action on
application performance issues. This complicates deployment and coding, as
well as tying your application to a particular cloud provider. However, I
believe that the next generation of cloud deployment frameworks will be able
to do this automatically, by integrating general-purpose monitoring
applications with policy-based cloud management engines.
When I was watching the recent the election returns on CNN, I wasn't sure
what was more amazing: Obama's historic victory, or CNN's technology. CNN was
able to display up-to-the minute results of each state's elections simply at
the touch of their news anchor onto the screen of an election-repor... (more)

An overall shift towards cloud computing has ramped up the demand for offsite
data storage centers. The growing demand for data storage has predictably
brought lots of competition as well. Larger storage companies have simply
found acquisitions to be a more viable way to deal with the uptick in
competition.
According to the Bedford Report, earnings season was not kind to key players
in the Data Storage industry following a string of disappointing quarterly
reports. Seagate said last month that its net income fell to $150 million, or
31 cents per share, in its fiscal second quarter. The results missed analyst
estimates looking for earnings of 33 cents a share and were down sharply from
$533 million, or $1.03 per share, in the same period a year earlier. As a
result, companies are increasingly looking to cloud computing environments in
order to accelerate value in b... (more)

"People are a lot more knowledgeable about APIs now. There are two types of
people who work with APIs - IT people who want to use APIs for something
internal and the product managers who want to do something outside APIs for
people to connect to them," explained Roberto Medrano, Executive Vice
President at SOA Software, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 15th Cloud Expo,
held Nov 4-6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
Internet of Things, Data and APIs
When something as simple as an API can integrate massive amounts of data
into, and through, a wide variety of applications, any company can be a
digital enterprise. There is a perception that some industries are using
technology to innovate, while others languish in antiquated ways of running
their business. But in our massively connected age, it's rare to find
examples where technology isn't... (more)
