Web Application Lifecycle Maintenance

Like an automobile, a web application needs occasional maintenance and management over its life cycle. Although it doesn't need oil changes, it will probably need version upgrades. There may not be manufacturer recalls, but sometimes servers fail or hang. An application doesn't need to be washed and detailed, but it does need to be backed up. And both cars and applications need occasional performance tuning. This article provides a complete list of the system management functions that need to be performed on a standard architecture web application, with a particular emphasis on doing so in an Infrastructure-as-a-Service environment. 1. Evaluation Anyone who has implemented an application without sufficient evaluation, only to realize too late that it does not solve the business problem, will understand why evaluation is part of the application lifecycle. 7 Steps to Effective User Education

There has been a lot of debate recently over the merits of user education, specifically in the security awareness arena. The questions range from, “is it worth it?” to “why aren’t we doing more of it?” and everything in between. But the biggest question is: How do we make it better? The answer, as usual, is a little tricky, so I decided to post a few tips from my experiences as a trainer and as a student. 1: Organize Smaller Training Groups I have found that having no more than 5 to 8 people in a session leads to better discussions and more effective training. I’m not sure of the psychology behind it, but smaller groups (at least in my experience) learn better and more content seems to stick. I know this can be tough, particularly in larger organizations, so the temptation is to pack as many people as possible into an auditorium and just regurgitate facts. This will... (more)

Microsoft is talking to HTC about adding its Windows operating system to HTC’s Android-based smartphones at little or no cost, people with knowledge of the matter said, evidence of the software maker’s struggle to gain ground in the mobile market. erry Myerson, head of Microsoft’s operating systems unit, asked HTC last month to load Windows Phone as a second option on handsets with Google’s rival software, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. Democrats in Congress Propose Bill to Ban “Paid Prioritization”

By Shannon Perry There are two sides to most stories, and Net Neutrality is no exception. While Internet service providers maintain that companies should pay for the current rise of Internet traffic, many Internet advocates, public figures, and American citizens have indicated that they do not want discrimination online that could hinder innovation and drive up costs for digital content. Although comments opposing the FCC’s proposed fast lanes literally crashed the Commission’s website earlier this month and several public figures have spoken out against the fast lanes, it remains difficult to quantify whether most Americans oppose Net Neutrality – or just the most vocal Americans. Congressional Democrats seem to think the former. In a press release dated May 14th, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont expressed his reservations about fast lanes; “I have heard from hundr... (more)
