Achieving the Full Promise of the Cloud

As the cloud market explodes, a distinct chasm has become apparent between the operation of infrastructure and applications. Sharing, isolation and load balancing issues in the network, combined with high density virtualization in compute and storage resources, can adversely impact the performance of applications running across the network, frustrating application developers and end users alike. Enter application defined networking (ADN), which offers great business value for cloud users. A complement to software defined networking (SDN), ADN enables applications to directly control and adapt their networking for optimal performance across both public and private clouds, without compromising on portability or security. With ADN solutions, developers and administrators can automatically instrument, analyze and reconfigure the virtual network of resources to ensure t... (more)

The Top 250 Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010) being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time to give my earlier list a complete overhaul. Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the Cloud Ecosystem. I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing. Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

How To Survive the Global Recession Through Cloud Computing

Michael Sheehan's Blog Adopting Cloud Computing as a primary technology strategy will be one of the main catalysts for technology-savvy business to not only stay in business, but also be successful in the long run. If the Global Recession truly hits as it seems that it will, items that directly and positively impact the bottom line of companies will naturally rise to the top. This week, Gartner, Inc released their list of the top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2009. This information stems from research performed within the Technology sector and factors in their client and research feedback. This list, released at the Gartner Symposium ITxpo, is considered to be potentially “disruptive to your environment or market in some way,” says Gartner analyst David Cearley. While I sometimes find some of Gartner’s commentary on trends in technology a bit conservative and missin... (more)

Recession Survival Kit: Adopt Cloud Computing

Two days before the single largest drop in the history of the stock market, Jason Calacanis - former Weblogs Inc. co-founder (and GM of Netscape) - wrote a lengthy blog post aimed at inspiring folks at startup companies "to get focused and to save as many as possible from hitting the wall." As Calacanis reminded readers of his blog, "Great entrepreneurs build value and market-share in down markets." We recently asked a selection of the industry's brightest minds what their own advice would be in these troubled times, and assembled it into a ten-point guide for software vendors, entrepreneurs, and startups to riding out a recession. Tip #1: Prioritize Harvesting Existing Assets and Opportunities This comes from the Jeremy Chone, CTO of Nexaweb Technologies, a VC-funded software provider that offers the industry’s most comprehensive application platform for mission-crit... Why Are There No Clouds Yet in Turkey?

Cem Sertoglu's Blog I get pitched by a large number of Turkish internet startups, and none of them, not one, so far, have built their application using cloud computing. I wonder why that is. It seems to me that the cloud computing service providers like Google App Engine, AWS and 10gen, offer a solid, scalable solution. On top of this, all of the non-cloud Turkish alternatives are more expensive than their US counterparts. Yet, you read about companies like drop.io going 100% cloud and I can not name a single Turkish company following suit. Interesting. [This post appeared originally here. Ten Key Reasons Enterprise Cloud Computing Is Going Places

Angsuman Chakraborty's Enterprise Blog Cloud computing isn’t about doing anything new, instead it’s about applications that run in the web rather than your desktop. Some technology experts define CLOUD as follows: Common, Location-independent, Online Utility provisioned on-Demand. As per my analysis, the key factors favoring Enterprise Cloud Computing are: Factor #1: The growing need of extremely powerful forms of end user computing  such as complex modeling and simulation, and data analytics are on the rise dramatically in the last few years. Many of the tasks can be performed by remotely located computing power and the sophisticated software that the typical enterprise IT set up did not. Factor #2: The users desperately need processing cycles, data storage now-a-days for high degree of computation. Since, the communication bandwidth is limited and expensive, we need ... (more)

Cisco to Present at Cloud Computing Conference & Expo

David Bernstein, Vice-President and General Manager of Cloud Computing at Cisco, will be presenting at SYS-CON's 2nd International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo in New York City this coming March 30-April 1, 2009. Bernstein, whose team runs Cisco’s Cloud Lab and who is responsible for Cisco’s Cloud Gateway products as well as heading development for itsCloud Interoperability and Standards initiatives, will be giving a stimulating and informative breakout session entitled "Cloud Building: Secrets from the Vault." "Although there are a lot of 'Cloud Consumers' out there," says Bernstein, "there aren’t too many 'Cloud Builders.' On the one hand it requires a serious capital investment; on the other hand it is largely a black art. This applies to the Cloud “OS” as well as the physical platform." Bernstein continues: "Approaching a Cloud as a large Cluster of regula... (more)

Zuora Seeks Cloud's Silver Lining

Zuora, the Marc Benioff-backed on-demand billing and payments start-up, has announced what it calls the Z-Commerce Platform, a development platform dedicated to monetizing cloud computing services. Zuora CEO Tien Tzuo describes the widgetry as the start-up’s most important product announcement to date, “a big step towards our vision of being the de facto commerce engine for the cloud.” With Z-Billing, Z-Payments, and Z-Force, its existing products, the company’s supposed to have a suite of business cloud solutions focused on driving revenue from cloud computing. It figures there’s huge market potential for a provider of cloud-based commerce capabilities such as subscription billing and payments given predictions like Merrill Lynch’s that puts the addressable market for cloud computing at $160 billion, including $95 billion in business and productivity applications.... SLA for Microsoft Azure, When? -Microsoft's Response

Matt Rogers of Microsoft's Windows Azure Product Marketing team responded to the When Are We Going To Have an SLA for Microsoft Azure? article written by Alin Irimie. Here is Rogers' response. "Alin, the points you are making are very reasonable, and are largely due to being a service in Community Technology Preview (CTP) rather than a launched service.  Unfortunately some of your questions we are not able to answer while still in this mode, but will be resolved as we reach commercial availability later this year. 1) Is Windows Azure a .NET only platform?  No, we have committed to opening the platform to most programming languages over time, meaning you will be able to deploy it and run it in our cloud, and also access the services from outside the cloud as you describe above.  We took initial steps on this last month with the implementation of FastCGI and support f... A Standardized Cloud Performance Rating System

Ever get one of those random phone calls in the midst of your work day that makes you think, huh -- interesting idea? Well earlier today I had one from a guy looking to learn more about cloud computing platforms. Although it ended up he wasn't specifically looking for an elastic computing platform, he did ask a few very thought provoking questions. What he asked was if there is a simple way to compare the performance, security and quality of various cloud computing providers? He went on to say that when comparing traditional hardware vendors it was easy for him to understand the standardized specifications (GHZ, GB, etc) as well as determine quality based on brand recognition, but in the cloud world there was no easy way for him to compare "apples to apples". In his words, "there is Amazon and then there is everyone else". Although overly simplified, he was kind of ... (more)
