Building a Drag-and-Drop Shopping Cart with AJAX

Keeping up with the latest Web technologies is tough nowadays. Every week it seems new sites are launched that push the envelope further and further in terms of what can be accomplished using just a Web browser. The rise of AJAX over the past several months has taken over the development world and breathed new life into the Web. Although these techniques have been possible for many years now, the maturity of Web standards like XHTML and CSS now make it a viable alternative that will be viewable by all but the oldest browsers. It's also been possible to accomplish many of the same things using Flex or Flash, but the development cycle with those applications is typically more involved and the overhead often not justified. We're going to harness the power of the Scipt.aculo.us JavaScript library to provide our interaction. As their Web site states, this library "provide... (more)

Survey: "Developers in Emerging Markets Are Embracing AJAX"

"While we see strong adoption of AJAX globally, our latest research indicates the developer community in the Emerging Markets is embracing this programming model most aggressively," stated John Andrews, President of Evans Data. Andrews will be discussing the data from this survey, entitled the "Emerging Markets Development Survey," at  AJAXWorld Conference & Expo 2006, being held 2-4 October, 2006 at the Santa Clara Convention Center, CA.  "Given that these developers are spending a majority of their time developing Web Applications, we only see this trend continuing," Andrews added.  Over 400 developers from Eastern Europe, Brazil, China, and India contributed to the study. Brazil is breaking through the pack with 25% of developers using the technique. China has the lowest adoption rate with a little over 16%, closer to North American levels of AJAX adoption which are ... (more)

Rich Internet Applications vs AJAX: "2008 Will Be A Crucial Year"

While AJAX, as XML co-inventor Tim Bray puts it, "tries to do everything in the browser using just what the browser ships with," RIA frameworks like Adobe AIR, Microsoft Silverlight, and JavaFX aim to take developers beyond the limitations of the browser. "I'm not brave enough to predict who wins," Bray noted in a SYS-CON.com feature earlier in the year, "but I do predict that 2008 will be a crucial year; either RIAs enter the mainstream, or they start to smell like a red herring left in the sun." Bray's predictions came in the feature "Where's AJAX, SOA and Virtualization Headed in 2008?" - which also included predictions from: Joshua Allen, Microsoft; Dr Adam Kolawa, Parasoft; Eric Newcomer, IONA Technologies; Bill Roth, BEA Systems; Brad Abrams, Microsoft; Kevin Hoffman, iPhone Developer's Journal; Ian Thain, Sybase; Yakov Fain, Farata Systems. Some of you likely noticed that my PDC09 demo included a stubbed out Search function that I didn’t really get to walkthrough during the talk.   I thought I’d do a blog post showing how it is done. To get started you need: Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 Silverlight 4 Beta  (which includes RIA Services) You can download the completed solution as well.  and be sure to check out the full talk.     First let’s write a new method on the DomainService to return the search results.  In this case I want to return any Plates who’s name matches (grouped by Restaurant)  and any Restaurant who’s name matches.  public IQueryable SearchRestaurants(string term) {     //Find all plates that match, grouped by restaurant     var restaurantPlatesList = this.ObjectContext.Restaurants         .Where (r => r.Plates.Any (p=>p.Name.Contains(term)))         .OrderBy(k => k.ID);    ...
