Data Management for the Cloud Era
As data explodes in quantity, importance and from new sources, the need for
managing and protecting data residing across physical, virtual, and cloud
environments grow with it. Managing data includes protecting it, indexing and
classifying it for true, long-term management, compliance and E-Discovery.
Commvault can ensure this with a single pane of glass solution - whether in a
private cloud, a Service Provider delivered public cloud or a hybrid cloud
environment - across the heterogeneous enterprise.

Full-Day Cloud Computing Bootcamp will take place during SYS-CON's Cloud
Computing Conference & Expo Europe, May 18-19, in Prague.
Cloud computing is an opportunity for businesses to implement low-cost,
low-power and high-efficiency systems to deliver scalable infrastructure. But
moving to a cloud infrastructure is not necessarily as nice and clean as the
providers would want you to think. With cloud infrastructures problems don't
magically go away; they just shift: you don't have scalability or storage
problems any more, but you need to constantly monitor the cloud and your
application in it.
Led by Alan Williamson, the Cloud Computing Bootcamp will illustrate all the
major players and provide a hands-on program with configuration samples, live
demos and working setups you can further adapt and play with.

The NYTimes.com has been migrating many new applications and platforms onto
Amazon's EC2 infrastructure. By moving toward a service-oriented approach to
communication between platforms and systems, they have been able to
accelerate this migration process.
In his session at the 8th International Cloud Expo, Paul Robbins, Software
Manager from NYTimes.com, will cover the hurdles of moving to a service-based
approach and will discuss how this reduces many other infrastructure concerns
and provides flexibility when determining a server environment.

DevOps is speeding towards the IT world like a freight train and the hype
around it is deafening. There is no reason to be afraid of this change as it
is the natural reaction to the agile movement that revolutionized development
just a few years ago. By definition, DevOps is the natural alignment of IT
performance to business profitability. The relevance of this has yet to be
quantified but it has been suggested that the route to the CEO's chair will
come from the IT leaders that successfully make the transition to a DevOps
model. If this still seems foreign to you, I recommend reading up on DevOps
Blog from IT Revolution, the OpsCode Blog, and check out The Phoenix Project.
Despite all the talk around simple monitoring tools, breaking through the
walls between Dev and Ops still poses a real challenge. This is because of a
misunderstanding around Operations real purp... (more)

We're still relatively early in the cloud computing hype cycle but I strongly
believe that in the future, most if not all server-side software applications
will be deployed in a cloud-computing-like manner. That is not to say that
all applications will be run in one of exactly five global clouds. On the
contrary, every enterprise will have one or more 'clouds' into which they
deploy applications.
James Urquhart recently posed a question that had been on my mind as well:
If "grid computing" is about running job-based tasks in a MPP model (e.g.
HPC)... If "utility computing" is a business model for providing computing on
an as-needed, bill-for-what-you-use basis... If "cloud computing" is a market
model describing services provided over the Internet... If "virtualization"
describes providing software layers in the execution stack... T... (more)

Now, it's business 101 that the first entrant into a market does necessarily
win and that so called "fast followers" can quickly take over a market.
In Cloud computing there are early guys (notably Amazon), the fast followers
(notably Google), the weird followers (notably Microsoft and Apple who seem
to view the cloud as simple data sync.) and then there's Yahoo!.
CNET reported that (as they put it) "finally!" Yahoo! was getting into the
Cloud business. However, it you read the Yahoo! press release it rather
tersely states:
[Yahoo! will be] developing a world-class cloud computing and storage ...the
Company will form a Cloud Computing & Data Infrastructure Group
The future tense plus the re-organization suggests - or promises - that
progress will be slow and they'll be very late to the party. Another way of
saying "late to the party" is "missing... (more)
"We shouldn’t be surprised that mainstream business is approaching cloud
computing with caution," notes Cloudworks CEO Mike Eaton, who will be giving
a session next week on the challenges of Marketing a Paradigm Shift at
SYS-CON's 1st International Cloud Computing Conferecne & Expo (November
19-21, 2008) being held at The Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA.
"Businesses have many concerns about moving their data to the cloud, some
legitimate and some irrational," Eaton continues. "All these concerns need to
be overcome in order for a widespread adoption of Cloud computing to occur."
His session will discuss the obstacles to getting customers to embrace the
concept of cloud computing and how to overcome them.
This session will cover topics such as the dangers of preaching to the
converted, why “better” isn’t good enough when moving customers away
from the familiar, and commun... (more)

Building the right infrastructure that can scale up or down at a moment's
notice can be a complicated and expensive task, but it's essential in today's
business landscape. This applies to an enterprise trying to cut-costs, a
young business unexpectedly saturated with customer demand, or a start-up
looking to launch.
There are many challenges when building a reliable, flexible architecture
that can manage unpre... (more)
What, aside from a professional passion for the Enterprise IT possibilities

As the theme tune to the classic 1984 Ghostbusters movie goes, "If there's
something strange, in your neighborhood, Who ya gonna call?", I am left
wondering what we'll all be singing (shouting?) when something goes wrong in
our cloud world. When you've got your whole business in the cloud and there
is an outage, just what happens to your bottom line? What happens to your
customers? What do you do?

As the richness of our cloud-oriented world grows, this is becoming a serious
consideration. We've come to rely, for example, on various web-based email
systems such as Microsoft's Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Google's Gmail. Each of
these have had high-profile outages in the last year, and whenever that
happens, you are completely powerless to do anything. You are merely a voice
among millions caught in the s... (more)
CloudEXPO Stories By Yeshim Deniz Every organization is facing their own Digital Transformation as they attempt to stay ahead of the competition, or worse, just keep up. Each new opportunity, whether embracing machine learning, IoT, or a cloud migration, seems to bring new development, deployment, and management models. The results are more diverse and federated computing models than any time in our history.
Dec. 18, 2018 11:45 PM EST | By Pat Romanski On-premise or off, you have powerful tools available to maximize the value of your infrastructure and you demand more visibility and operational control. Fortunately, data center management tools keep a vigil on memory contestation, power, thermal consumption, server health, and utilization, allowing better control no matter your cloud's shape. In this session, learn how Intel software tools enable real-time monitoring and precise management to lower operational costs and optimize infrastructure for today even as you're forecasting for tomorrow.

Nov. 26, 2018 01:30 PM EST | By Elizabeth White While a hybrid cloud can ease that transition, designing and deploy that hybrid cloud still offers challenges for organizations concerned about lack of available cloud skillsets within their organization. Managed service providers offer a unique opportunity to fill those gaps and get organizations of all sizes on a hybrid cloud that meets their comfort level, while delivering enhanced benefits for cost, efficiency, agility, mobility, and elasticity.
