How Much Does a Mobile App Cost? | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Mobility

How much does it cost to make an app is almost as popular a question as it is confusing

How much does it cost to make an app is almost as popular a question as it is confusing.

No one tries to learn the exact costs of, say, making a movie: people realize that there's an overwhelming amount of variables involved on which they depend.

But almost every day a new inquiry is posted on a tech forum, Quora, or Reddit, as to how much it'd take to build a mobile business app.

Such calculation, in many ways, is even harder to make.

Is there a way to tackle the question properly?

First we want you to understand that any exact figures couldn't possibly be given straight away, without the details, and that all the so-called online app development cost calculators are, essentially, just marketing baits.

That said, there is still some info you can analyze to get a frame of reference; to get a rough idea about a budget you can squeeze an app in.

Here's what you should look for:

  1. Suggestions from experienced VCs
  2. The funding raised for successful app-oriented companies
  3. Estimations from seasoned software vendors, such as Perfectial, that are based on the projects they've worked with over the years.

What do VCs say:

According to Jason Calacanis, a renowned entrepreneur and Angel Investor, startups should raise at least $750,000 in the seed round of funding to cover an 18-month runway ($35,000/month), capex, legal and operational fees ($120,000).

Although Jason is talking about getting a whole company off the ground, we can still figure out the approximate costs of building an app using his rates.

The majority of solid mobile apps - or rather their 1.0 versions - are built within a 2-4 month period. Therefore, the costs of development vary from $70,000 to $140,000.

Fred Wilson, a co-founder of Union Square Ventures and one of the world's most respected venture capitalists, says that startups usually need $500,000 to $1,500,000 at the early stage. The seed money helps them find a market fit and leave their day jobs confidently to delve fully into their projects.

How much funds did famous app-focused companies raise?

  • Instagram raised $500,000 in the seed round. The app included a heavy server element, but initially, didn't have Android support.
  • Uber, another app with an elaborate backend, acquired $200,000 in venture funding initially, and then received another $1,25 million in the series A round.
  • Snap Inc, the founders of SnapChat, got $485,000 in the seed round.
  • Twitterific, the MAC OS and IOS client for Twitter, cost $250,000 to build (both iPhone and iPad interfaces)
  • Obama app, which was rather simple, was built for $50,000-$150,000

What are the estimations of one of the app development vendor (Perfectial)?

Based on the data of one of the app development company (Perfectial) there are three categories of mobile apps complexity-wise: simple apps, mid-level apps, enterprise apps.

Simple apps only have up to 10 API endpoints (nothing more than a menu and a few clickable titles). It takes roughly 180 man-hours (140-development; 40 design) to build them. There is no need to hire prodigious experts for such projects too, so you can get an $65/hour rate and have the product developed for $15,600 give or take.

Mid-level complexity apps include 10-30 API endpoints, are a bit more advanced in terms of interface, and are usually built within 5-8 weeks. The engineers developing them must be skillful ($100/hour), and so the overall costs for launching such apps might vary from $60,000 to $96,000.

Enterprise Apps are usually associated with a heavy server element and extensive API consumption. You'll need top-notch talent to build them, for which you'll be charged $150/hour, and you should expect a 3-6 month development time frame at the very least. The costs for having an enterprise app developed might amount to $100,000 or $1,000,000 or more.

And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...
