Building a Kubernetes Cluster with Ansible
Kubernetes is a new and revolutionary open-sourced system for managing
containers across multiple hosts in a cluster. Ansible is a simple IT
automation tool for just about any requirement for reproducible environments.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 18th Cloud Expo, Patrick Galbraith, a
principal engineer at HPE, discussed how to build a fully functional
Kubernetes cluster on a number of virtual machines or bare-metal hosts. Also
included will be a brief demonstration of building a Kubernetes cluster and
then running on it a Galera MySQL cluster.

Containers 101: What You Need to Know
Containers are the future of web development, in large part thanks to
Docker's explosive growth. According to DataDog, 15 percent of hosts run
Docker, which is significantly up from the 6 percent of hosts running it at
this point in 2015. LinkedIn has also seen a 160 percent increase in profile
references to Docker in just the past year alone, indicating Docker has
become a much bigger priority for IT professionals looking for work. With
this technology primed to continue its exponential growth in the coming
years, here's a Q&A; rundown of the basics: consider it Containers 101.
What are containers, exactly? And why are they so rapidly grabbing developer
market share from virtual machines?
In order to better understand containers, it's helpful to consider them in
contrast to virtual machines.

How to Make Use of Serverless Compute Solutions for IoT Device Simulation
When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many
development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a
choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it's simply not feasible to do
so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next
best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with
ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple
application or transport protocols, you would be looking at some significant
engineering investment.
On-demand, serverless computing enables developers to try out a fleet of
devices on IoT gateways with ease. With a sensor simulator built on top of
AWS Lambda, it's possible to elastically gene... (more)

The Jevons Paradox: How Democratization of IT Increases Demand for Cloud
The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase
efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption.
Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological
improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these
improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal.

In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for
Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examining
how the Internet and the cloud has allowed for the democratization of IT,
resulting in an increased demand for the cloud and the drive to develop new
ways to utilize it.

Generalists and Specialists: Divergent Patterns for DevOps
In IT, we sometimes coin terms for things before we know exactly what they
are and how they'll be used. The resulting terms may capture a common set of
aspirations and goals - as "cloud" did broadly for on-demand, self-service,
and flexible computing. But such a term can also lump together diverse and
even competing practices, technologies, and priorities to the point where
important distinctions are glossed over and lost. This is the case with
DevOps. On the one hand, many DevOps discussions focus on culture, breaking
down silos, making everyone responsible for security, and giving developers
operational responsibility for their applications. This is primarily a
developer-centric view of DevOps. On the other hand, DevOps (or cloud-native
operations if you prefer) can also be approached through the lens of h... (more)

For better or worse, DevOps has gone mainstream. All doubt was removed when
IBM and HP threw up their respective DevOps microsites.
Where are we on the hype cycle? It's hard to say for sure but there's a
feeling we're heading for the "Peak of Inflated Expectations."
What does this mean for the enterprise? Should they avoid DevOps? Definitely
not. Should they be cautious though? Absolutely.
The truth is that DevOps and the enterprise are at best strange bedfellows.
The movement has its roots in the tech community's elite.
Open source projects and methodologies driven by the alumni of companies like
Netflix, Google and Amazon. This is a great thing for the evolution of
DevOps. It can be alienating for Enterprise IT though. Learning about Netflix

Don't go chasing waterfall ... development, that is. According to a recent
post by Madison Moore on Medium featuring insights from several software
delivery industry leaders, waterfall is - while still popular - not the best
way to win in the marketplace. With methodologies like Agile, DevOps and
Continuous Delivery becoming ever more prominent over the past 15 years or
so, waterfall is old news. Or, is it? Moore cites a recent study by Gartner:
"According to Gartner's IT Key Metrics Data report, the waterfall method as
employed on 56% of development efforts in 2015, with iterative methods used
in 21% of projects and agile in 23%." While Agile has been the buzzword of
the decade, it seems many organizations still haven't fully adopted the
practice yet. While many cite the fallbacks of waterfall development - no
feedback loops, rigid structure and requirements-based ... (more)
