IBM has launched a new service that lets outside enterprises indulge in software development and testing on its Cloud Platform. IBM currently hosts services on the web like Lotus Live along with a Private cloud option that it launched in 2009. Since then it has steadily expanded its cloud portfolio to include hosted test environments, storage and other associated services. Now along with Product testing and development, IBM is targeting the whole Infrastructure space offered as a service on the cloud (IAAS). Big Blue has clearly ventured into commercial Public cloud terrain complete with a Partner ecosystem like Amazon EC2’s.  Its channel partners will be able to build their services over IBM’s cloud allowing it to offer a suite of web based Software applications. The new offering comes with support for Linux via Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux... (more)

Butler Analytics: Real Analysts use R

In an overview of several predictive analytics platforms (including SPSS, Oracle and SAS), Butler Analytics offers this 4.5/5 star review of Revolution R Enterprise: Real analysts use R – well it sounds a bit macho, but actually there is some truth in it. R is the most widely used, and arguably the most powerful analysis software on the planet. Revolution Analytics has taken this Open Source wild child and turned it into something the enterprise can use with relevant support, training and enhanced productivity. Revolution R Enterprise is built on open source R and has been enhanced for performance, productivity (through visual tools), and integration with enterprise data sources – and particularly Apache Hadoop for big data applications. Support and training services are bundled on top of the technology – something most organisations will require. A community editio... (more)

Web Developers’ Ultimate Toolkit

The web-developer today is increasingly faced with so many open source tools to choose from in producing a final piece of software that it can almost seem daunting. What we aim to do here is to simplify the process by describing 5 key (and free!) open-source sites that every developer should include in their toolkit. Think of these 5 resources as part and parcel of the basic development cycle for designing and implementing a new website or application. The bottom line is that for every project you should plan to: wireframe it develop it track it debug it upload it Let’s describe these elements in further detail . . . 1. Wireframing or prototyping a project A wireframe is a screen blueprint or schematic of a website that provides a layout of the planned website or app so that the developer can construct the site most effectively and efficiently. Fortunately, there are pl... (more)

Open-source jclouds library supports ElasticHosts!

Following in the footsteps of Apache Libcloud, another open-source cloud library has added support for ElasticHosts. We’re very pleased to report that the open-source jclouds Java cloud computing library now supports ElasticHosts and ElasticStack. This is thanks to developer Adrian Cole, whom we’ve been working with to make this happen — see his official announcement. You can now use the fully-featured and actively-developed jclouds library to access your ElasticHosts instances directly. To introduce jclouds in the developers’ own words: jclouds is an open source library that helps you get started in the cloud and reuse your java and clojure development skills. Our api allows you freedom to use portable abstractions or cloud-specific features. Here’s how we help you get started: Simple interface Instead of creating new object types, we reuse concepts like maps ... (more)

Oracle Disaster Recovery Site Hosted by Amazon Cloud

DR sites are typically built as an exact replica of the primary site. Application and database software is installed on DR site and sits there mostly unused, waiting for a disaster to happen. DR site is very expensive proposition than only large companies are able to afford. Amazon AWS is an interesting alternative to having your own DR site. Oracle databases on DR side are in Data Guard configuration with a primary site and actively apply archive log files shipped from there. Pay per use, scalable Amazon Cloud model makes it an attractive alternative to creating and maintaining your own DR site. During normal usage you will use only as many resources  CPU, memory) as is required to keep Oracle Data Guard active. Once disaster strikes you can switch over to DR site, add CPU and memory to your database and make it able to withstand regular load until primary site be... (more)

The use of containers by developers -- and now increasingly IT operators -- has grown from infatuation to deep and abiding love. But as with any long-term affair, the honeymoon soon leads to needing to live well together ... and maybe even getting some relationship help along the way. And so it goes with container orchestration and automation solutions, which are rapidly emerging as the means to maintain the bliss between rapid container adoption and broad container use among multiple cloud host...

Both SaaS vendors and SaaS buyers are going “all-in” to hyperscale IaaS platforms such as AWS, which is disrupting the SaaS value proposition. Why should the enterprise SaaS consumer pay for the SaaS service if their data is resident in adjacent AWS S3 buckets? If both SaaS sellers and buyers are using the same cloud tools, automation and pay-per-transaction model offered by IaaS platforms, then why not host the “shrink-wrapped” software in the customers’ cloud? Further, serverless computing, cl...

The “Digital Era” is forcing us to engage with new methods to build, operate and maintain applications. This transformation also implies an evolution to more and more intelligent applications to better engage with the customers, while creating significant market differentiators. In both cases, the cloud has become a key enabler to embrace this digital revolution. So, moving to the cloud is no longer the question; the new questions are HOW and WHEN. To make this equation even more complex, most...

The current age of digital transformation means that IT organizations must adapt their toolset to cover all digital experiences, beyond just the end users’. Today’s businesses can no longer focus solely on the digital interactions they manage with employees or customers; they must now contend with non-traditional factors. Whether it's the power of brand to make or break a company, the need to monitor across all locations 24/7, or the ability to proactively resolve issues, companies must adapt to...
DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm. In their Day 3 Keynote at 20th Cloud Expo, Chris Brown, a Solutions Marketing Manager at Nutanix, and Mark Lav...

Virtualization over the past years has become a key strategy for IT to acquire multi-tenancy, increase utilization, develop elasticity and improve security. And virtual machines (VMs) are quickly becoming a main vehicle for developing and deploying applications. The introduction of containers seems to be bringing another and perhaps overlapped solution for achieving the same above-mentioned benefits. Are a container and a virtual machine fundamentally the same or different? And how? Is one techn...
