"IBM is really all in on blockchain. We take a look at sort of the history of
blockchain ledger technologies. It started out with bitcoin, Ethereum, and
IBM evaluated these particular blockchain technologies and found they were

Three Hot Cloud Security Topics from @CloudExpo Silicon Valley
Two weeks ago (November 3-5), I attended the Cloud Expo Silicon Valley as a
speaker, where I presented on the security and privacy due diligence
requirements for cloud solutions.
Cloud security is a topical issue for every CIO, CISO, and technology buyer.
Decision-makers are always looking for insights on how to mitigate the
security risks of implementing and using cloud solutions. Based on the
presentation topics covered at the conference, as well as the general
discussions heard between sessions, I wanted to share some of my observations
on emerging trends. As cyber security serves as a foundation and necessary
defense for customer and cloud solutions, cyber becomes more and more
commoditized. The real impact is how do we deliver a confidence or trust to
customers and their customer journey with our o... (more)

Can Developers Benefit from Regulatory Compliance?
Effectively SMBs and government programs must address compounded regulatory
compliance requirements. The most recent are Controlled Unclassified
Information and the EU's GDPR have Board Level implications. Managing
sensitive data protection will likely result in acquisition criteria,
demonstration requests and new requirements. Developers, as part of the
pre-planning process and the associated supply chain, could benefit from
updating their code libraries and design by incorporating changes.

Data Privacy in the Cloud – Whose Data Is It Anyway?
Last year was another banner year for security breaches, sad but true. At
times it felt like a week did not go by without the announcement of another
large corporate security breach (that usually happened sometime in the past)
and the personal information of millions of people was potentially at risk.
One breach in particular stands out to me. The Equifax breach that occurred
last September. Approximately 145 million individuals' personal information
had potentially been acquired by the hackers.
The reason this one stands out is not due to the size, or that is was a
company that sells services to protect your personal information (though that
is ironic). What makes it stands out was the testimony of the interim CEO,
Paulino do Rego Barros. Barros testified that ‘consumers do not have a say
in opting in or out of ... (more)
Understanding Cloud Complexities and Avoiding "Cloud Fatigue"
We're seeing an emerging trend in the cloud computing world. I've been
referring to it as cloud fatigue, but it's more commonly known as
repatriation, or moving workloads from the cloud back to on-prem locations.
According to a recent 451 Research report, over 21 percent of organizations
have plans to pull back from the cloud and return to an on-prem
infrastructure in 2017. Considering the vast growth of cloud adoption over
the last several years, what's behind this trend?
We believe cloud fatigue is the result of deployments going awry. It usually
happens when companies quickly adopt one of the leading public cloud
platforms (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, etc.) because they're
attracted to the promises of ease-of-use, flexibility and low computing
costs. What happens next depends on a myriad of f... (more)
Internet of Blockchains: How Networks of Distributed Ledgers Will Enable
Scalability and Cross-Chain Value Exchange
A few years ago – in the early days of Blockchain – a lot of people were
taken with the idea of a multifunctional chain on which all transactions
could be handled.
After Ethereum was launched in 2014, its advocates were talking themselves
hoarse about the transformative opportunities the platform introduced.
Decentralized applications, they predicted, along with all sorts of value
transfers would be executed exclusively on Ethereum from that point on, and
no other networks would ever be needed.
However, that belief didn’t last long: experts saw major networks facing
scalability issues when trying to increase their user bases and, also, they
saw the frequent hacking.
After a while, there were but a few people left who supported the concept of
the “one... (more)

Cloud Governance means many things to many people. Heck, just the word cloud
means different things depending on who you are talking to. While definitions
can vary, controlling access to cloud resources is invariably a central piece
of any governance program.
Enterprise cloud computing has transformed IT. Cloud computing decreases
time-to-market, improves agility by allowing businesses to adapt quickly to
changing market demands, and, ultimately, drives down costs.
The ease of deploying and scaling cloud services, along with their low cost
of acquisition, has resulted in increasingly decentralized IT, or what is
referred to as “shadow IT.” This helps organizations become more agile,
but it also increases security threats due to absence of governance, uniform
information security, and adherence to regulatory compliance requirements.
Central IT has since reasserted its... (more)
