Are You Thinking About Big Data When Doing IoT? - You Should Be
When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware
itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which
are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of
IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are
these devices providing? IoT is not about the devices, it's about the data
consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits.

Will Supply Chain Be the Breakout Blockchain Use Case for 2018?
Supply Chain. Logistics. Provenance. Hot topics around the dinner table with
the family I am sure. Okay, maybe not so much. Even so, these all impact our
lives daily, while we may be blissfully unaware of it. Take the dinner table
for example. That savory grilled salmon filet on your plate may have come all
the way from China. Those carrots and asparagus? Possibly shipped in from
Peru. The fresh (out of season) fruit? Chile or Mexico could have been the
origination point. What gets all those items from their source to your dinner
table, while they are still fresh, is all about the supply chain.
Food is a great example to discuss because it is time critical. The product
must travel a vast distance, change hands many times, cross borders, pass
various inspections and reviews, customs forms, shipping from in... (more)

Welcome to the Era of Open Analytics
Cloud applications are seeing a deluge of requests to support the exploding
advanced analytics market. "Open analytics" is the emerging strategy to
deliver that data through an open data access layer, in the cloud, to be
directly consumed by external analytics tools and popular programming
languages. An increasing number of data engineers and data scientists use a
variety of platforms and advanced analytics languages such as SAS, R, Python
and Java, as well as frameworks such as Hadoop and Spark. Cloud APIs are
commonly designed to support application integration representing a
disconnect with the analytics ecosystem. These combined trends create
significant demand for a "bring-your-own-analytics" (BYOA) capability for
cloud applications.

Shifting Left on Development with Experimentation
As applications become more complex and codebases grow, companies are forced
to implement more comprehensive quality safeguards which slow the rate at
which they can deliver new software. At the same time, the companies that
prevail in this winner-take-all economy are those that can accelerate
software delivery while providing a high caliber of quality.

Microservices: Choosing the Right Cloud, Services and Tools
We all know that end users experience the Internet primarily with mobile
devices. From an app development perspective, we know that successfully
responding to the needs of mobile customers depends on rapid DevOps - failing
fast, in short, until the right solution evolves in your customers'
relationship to your business. Whether you're decomposing an SOA monolith, or
developing a new application cloud natively, it's not a question of using
microservices - not doing so will be a path to eventual business failure.
In his general session at 21st Cloud Expo, Andrew Hately, an IBM
Distinguished Engineer, discussed how the real and more difficult question,
in developing microservices-based applications, is this: what's the best
combination of cloud services and tools to use to get the right results in

How Serverless Computing Changes Cloud, and Your Job
In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud
services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud
Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have
already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are
employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework.
