Microsoft Nudges Eclipse Developers to Windows-Ware

Eclipse Platform on Ulitzer Microsoft was in one of its interoperability moods Wednesday and said that developers using Eclipse, the great open source IDE, will be able to target Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, its Azure cloud operating system and Silverlight. This renewed open source invasion - Microsoft's no stranger to Eclipse although it's not a member - is being spearheaded by two open source allies of Microsoft: Canada's Tasktop Technologies for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and France's Soyatec for Azure and Silverlight. Tasktop's CEO, by the way, created Eclipse's Mylyn project. Anyhow, there's a new open source plug-in that's supposed to advance the industry's cloud interoperability efforts. Microsoft Windows Azure adds IaaS and Hybrid Cloud Capabilities

Microsoft is all set to lock horns with Amazon in the Cloud. Microsoft announced Windows Azure in 2008 as a .NET Platform as a Service (PaaS) and since then they have been adding features to make it more appealing to Java and PHP developers. It has reached a point where Windows Azure has become the polyglot PaaS and semi IaaS offering. With Worker Roles, customers could run a variety of workloads on Windows Azure. When compared to other PaaS offerings like Heroku, Cloud Foundry and Engine Yard, developers felt that Windows Azure is too prescriptive and forces too much of refactoring to move even simple consumer web applications. These applications need the underlying platform to be highly elastic and due to Windows Azure architecture, achieving rapid elasticity was complex. IBM has launched a new service that lets outside enterprises indulge in software development and testing on its Cloud Platform. IBM currently hosts services on the web like Lotus Live along with a Private cloud option that it launched in 2009. Since then it has steadily expanded its cloud portfolio to include hosted test environments, storage and other associated services. Now along with Product testing and development, IBM is targeting the whole Infrastructure space offered as a service on the cloud (IAAS).
