Enterprise IoT Has Created Smart Cities and a New Economy
Enterprises have taken advantage of IoT to achieve important revenue and cost
advantages. What is less apparent is how incumbent enterprises operating at
scale have, following success with IoT, built analytic, operations management
and software development capabilities - ranging from autonomous vehicles to
manageable robotics installations. They have embraced these capabilities as
if they were Silicon Valley startups.
As a result, many firms employ new business models that place enormous
importance on software-based innovations. They require not only skilled
occupations, such as data analysts and DevOps professionals, with more
technical skills, but also middle-level employees with more software and
computing acumen. Both large and small firms operate differently.
These are the "green shoots" of a new economy... (more)
Three Ruling Technology Trends to Watch Out for in 2018
As we head into a new year, IT improvements and management should be top of
mind for any business looking to amp up their customer experience, delivery
and service in 2018. Recently, at CA World ‘17, I talked about how every
business strategy is now an IT strategy. With that in mind, I have a few
predictions for 2018 that I encourage companies to have on their to-do list
as they look to find greater success in the new year.
#1 It's all about DevSecOps
Security will remain top of mind for customers, but the software development
lifecycle will now need to integrate security from start to finish in a
seamless way. The need for speed and velocity with quality in development has
created a "shift-left" movement that integrates security from the start,
which needs to be easy and accessible for developers as they write c... (more)
Inline, side-arm, reverse, and forward. These used to be the terms we used to
describe the architectural placement of proxies in the network.
Today, containers use some of the same terminology, but are introducing new
ones. That's an opportunity for me to extemporaneously expound* on my
favorite of all topics: the proxy.
One of the primary drivers of cloud (once we all got past the pipedream of
cost containment) has been scalability. Scale has challenged agility (and
sometimes won) in various surveys over the past five years as the number one
benefit organizations seek by deploying apps in cloud computing
environments.
That's in part because in a digital economy (in which we now operate), apps
have become the digital equivalent of brick-and-mortar "open/closed" signs
and the manifestation of digital customer assistance. Slow, unresponsive apps
have the same effec... (more)
The general concepts of DevOps have played a central role advancing the
modern software delivery industry. With the library of DevOps best practices,
tips and guides expanding quickly, it can be difficult to track down the best
and most accurate resources and information. In order to help the software
development community, and to further our own learning, we reached out to
leading industry analysts and asked them about an increasingly popular tenet
of a DevOps transformation: collaboration.
We asked Michael Azoff, Principal Analyst at Ovum; Clive Longbottom, founder
of and analyst atQuocirca; Julie Craig, Research Director at EMA; and Stephen
Hendrick, Principal Analyst at ESG: "To what extent is collaboration a
significant part of DevOps? What are the benefits of collaboration and how
does collaboration improve development/deployment initiatives?"
Here are their r... (more)

Making Data-Driven Decisions for Better DevOps Outcomes
DevOps promotes continuous improvement through a culture of collaboration.
But in real terms, how do you:
Integrate activities across diverse teams and services? Make objective
decisions with system-wide visibility? Use feedback lo... (more)
For most of the last decade, there has been a steady drumbeat of predictions
about the demise of the Chief Information Officer (CIO). Whether it was the
rise of the cloud, the emergence of the Chief Digital Officer or the promise
of artificial intelligence, there has been a chorus of people claiming that
the CIO role would imminently become antiquated and unnecessary.
As you would expect, there was also a counter-chorus (made up mostly of IT
executives) proclaiming the critical nature of the CIO role and why it was
finally time for them to ascend to the top echelons of enterprise management
and take their proverbial ‘seat at the table.'
And, of course, neither of these eventualities has really happened.
There are unquestionably instances in which each of these predictions has
come true. There are a few organizations that have eliminated the CIO role
and survived to t... (more)
I recently had a conversation with Jennifer Lent from TechTarget. She's a
respected thinker in our field and covers major trends. We spoke about the
emergence of BizDevOps and its implications for businesses.
We tackled a number of topics. She wrote about our conversation in a recent
article, "BizDevOps: Here's how to make it happen in your organization."
Since our conversation, I've been thinking more about BizDevOps, its
challenges, and what makes the BizDevOps pipeline flow.
Peter Drucker made the prescient statement that "Culture eats strategy for
breakfast." This applies to BizDevOps - changing tech is not hard, but
changing culture is. You can buy the tools and put the processes into place,
but getting team buy-in and creating the cultural shift to make BizDevOps run
are not easy tasks.
This type of change requires leadership commitment, communication, and
edu... (more)
I recently hosted a webinar on Enterprise Software Development in Pursuit
of Excellence that covers best practices for developing enterprise software
that is both flexible and reliable.
As software development becomes an integral part of today's enterprise, and
teams are often dispersed globally, it's important as a developer to have
some tried and true best practices to stand by. Scaling these principles and
duplicating successes across the distributed enterprise can be a challenge
however, particularly if other organizational stakeholders are turning on the
heat when it comes to security, costs, and concerns about shadow IT.
Often IT leaders and software development leaders have different priorities;
they may be competing for the ear of C-level executives when it comes to
resources and urgency. It's important to remember that they have the same
agenda-to ensure th... (more)

From showcase success stories from early adopters and web-scale businesses,
DevOps is expanding to organizations of all sizes, including the world's
largest enterprises - and delivering real results. Among the proven benefits,
DevOps is correlated with 20% faster time-to-market, 22% improvement in
quality, and 18% reduction in dev and ops costs, according to research firm
Vanson-Bourne. It is changing the way IT works, how businesses interact with
customers, and how organizations are buying, building, and delivering
software.
With a growing number of both adopters and providers, this rapidly... (more)
