DevOps vs SRE vs Cloud Native
DevOps is under attack because developers don't want to mess with
infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to
use platforms instead of raw automation. That's changing the landscape that
we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and
process redefinition (SRE).

Rob Hirschfeld's recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the
conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we
should be thinking about DevOps and controlling infrastructure. The rise of
Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is part of that redefinition of operations
vs development roles in organizations.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Rob Hirschfeld, CEO and

Deployment Methodology
1. Problem Statement
We are given a desktop platform with Java 8 or Java 9 installed and seek to
find a way to deploy high-performance Java applications that use Java 3D
and/or Jogl without having to run an installer. We are subject to the
constraint that the applications be signed and deployed so that they can be
run in a trusted environment (i.e., outside of the sandbox). Further, we seek
to do this in a way that does not depend on bundling a JRE with our
applications, as this makes downloads and installations rather long.
The novel javapackager command (included in the JDK versions 8 and 9),
produces the program installation packages in the range of sizes from 57 to
202 Megabytes approximately.
2. Motivation
We have a long history of making use of Java 3D applications in the software
engineering community. Since the introduction of Java 3D i... (more)
The cloud provides two major advantages to load and performance procedures
that help testing teams better model realistic behavior: instant
infrastructure and geographic location. Cloud-based load testing also lowers
the total cost of ownership, increases flexibility and allows testers to
understand the impact of third-party components. So you're sold on using the
cloud; here's what you should look for in a cloud-based load testing
solution.
One of the most dangerous moves software developers and testers can make is
being lulled into a false sense of security. For example, when application
features and performance levels meet expectations during pre-production, only
to crash and burn when presented to real users in production.
In that same vein, if your organization has any kind of performance testing
strategy, chances are you're conducting load testing. However, yo... (more)
Fingerspitzengefühl: A German word used to describe the ability to maintain
attention to detail in an ever-changing operational and tactical environment
by maintaining real-time situational awareness. The term is synonymous with
the English expression of "keeping one's finger on the pulse". The problem
with fingerspitzengefühl traditionally, in addition to pronouncing it, has
been it is hard for an individual to scale up. Today that is changing. In a
world of sensors, AI and mobile devices, having real-time situational
awareness is far easier than ever before. In fact, today the challenge is
not how to do it, but what to do with the massive volume of data that can be
provided.
Data comes from many different sources, especially considering field services
where work is often mobile, remote and dynamic. If more data can be
captured and added to a typical GPS coordi... (more)

OOP Concepts for Beginners: What Is Polymorphism
By Thorben Janssen
The word polymorphism is used in various contexts and describes situations in
which something occurs in several different forms. In computer science, it
describes the concept that objects of different types can be accessed through
the same interface. Each type can provide its own, independent implementation
of this interface. It is one of the core concepts of object-oriented
programming (OOP).
If you're wondering if an object is polymorphic, you can perform a simple
test. If the object successfully passes multiple is-a or instanceof tests,
it's polymorphic. As I've described in my post about inheritance, all Java
classes extend the class Object. Due to this, all objects in Java are
polymorphic because they pass at least two instanceof checks.
Different types of polymorphism
Java supports two types of... (more)

@CloudExpo Stories By Liz McMillan A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, whic...
