Revolution Analytics is proud to announce the latest update to our enhanced,
production-grade distribution of R, Revolution R Enterprise. This
update expands the range of supported computation platforms, adds new Big
Data predictive models, and updates to the latest stable release of open
source R (2.14.2), which improves performance of the R interpreter by about
30%. This release expands the range of big-data statistical analysis with
support for Generalized Linear Models (GLM). Logistic (Binomial) Poisson,
Gamma and Tweedie models are all supported with a high-performance C++
implementation, and you can also model any distribution in the GLM family
with a custom link function written in R. Big Data GLM has been a common
request from many of our customers, and beta testers have been blown away by
the speed of the implementation. For example here's an example of a T... (more)

"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and
virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two
technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of
research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the
2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP).
"CIOs and IT have been boxed in between modest budget growth and growing
legacy requirements," McDonald continued, noting that "Cloud services and
virtualization are well-suited for this budget reality, as they offer similar
service levels at lower budget costs."
The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to
December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time.
According to the results, CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster
than originally expected. Cur... (more)

Between 2005 and 2020, data volumes will grow by a factor of 300 - enough
data to stack CDs from the earth to the moon 162 times. This has come to be
known as the ‘Big Data' phenomenon. Unfortunately, traditional approaches
to handling, storing and analyzing data aren't adequate at this scale:
they're too costly, slow and physically cumbersome to keep up. Fortunately,
in response a new breed of technology has emerged that is cheaper, faster and
more scalable. Yet, in meeting these new needs they break many of the
traditional security approaches on which enterprises depended. In these
massive data volumes, how are organizations going to ensure that their
customer information is safe from people looking to exploit it? Is it
possible to adopt Big Data technologies while demonstrating compliance with
industry regulations? Will security get i... (more)

Applying IoT to Reduce Losses in Electric Power Distribution
Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here
Electric power utilities face relentless pressure on their financial
performance, and reducing distribution grid losses is one of the last
untapped opportunities to meet their business goals. Combining IoT-enabled
sensors and cloud-based data analytics, utilities now are able to find,
quantify and reduce losses faster - and with a smaller IT footprint.
Solutions exist using Internet-enabled sensors deployed temporarily at
strategic locations within the distribution grid to measure actual line
loads.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Mischa Steiner-Jovic, CEO of Awesense Inc.,
discussed how cloud-based data analytics use this data (combined with other
available data) to create a risk model, pinpoint high-risk grid segments and
systematically reduce losses.

@CloudExpo Stories By Liz McMillan DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE).
Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and... Feb. 12, 2018 12:00 PM EST Reads: 2,320 | By Dana Gardner The use of containers by developers -- and now increasingly IT operators -- has grown from infatuation to deep and abiding love. But as with any long-term affair, the honeymoon soon leads to needing to live well together ... and maybe even getting some relationship help along the way. And so it goes with container orchestration and automation solutions, which are rapidly emerging as the means to maintain the bliss between rapid container adoption and broad container use among multiple cloud host... Feb. 12, 2018 11:45 AM EST Reads: 407 | By Liz McMillan In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework.
It’s clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some needed changes, within both application development and operations. Tha... Feb. 12, 2018 11:00 AM EST Reads: 2,447 | By Elizabeth White You know you need the cloud, but you're hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You're looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you're concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.
What do you do? Feb. 12, 2018 10:15 AM EST Reads: 2,300 | By Liz McMillan As many know, the first generation of Cloud Management Platform (CMP) solutions were designed for managing virtual infrastructure (IaaS) and traditional applications. But that's no longer enough to satisfy evolving and complex business requirements.
In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Scott Davis, Embotics CTO, explored how next-generation CMPs ensure organizations can manage cloud-native and microservice-based application architectures, while also facilitating agile DevOps methodology. He expla... Feb. 12, 2018 07:30 AM EST Reads: 3,515 | By Elizabeth White When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead... The truth is, technology isn’t as revolutionary as we often think – and commenting on incremental changes alone may not help us understand what lies ahead.
