Building Open Source IoT Ecosystems
Widespread fragmentation is stalling the growth of the IIoT and making it
difficult for partners to work together. The number of software platforms,
apps, hardware and connectivity standards is creating paralysis among
businesses that are afraid of being locked into a solution.
EdgeX Foundry is unifying the community around a common IoT edge framework
and an ecosystem of interoperable components.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim White, Distinguished Engineer at Dell EMC,
discussed best practices for bringing traditional competitors together and
provide examples of how the framework fits with existing connectivity
standards with interoperable components to simplify development and
deployment of IoT solutions across a wide variety of use cases.

MongoDB, an open-source document store and most popular NoSQL database on the
market today, offers a variety of advanced features to administer security
over your MongoDB deployments. In this tutorial post, we're going to show
you how to set up role-based access control (RBAC) to manage user access
across your MongoDB systems for reIndex, mongodump and mongorestore.
If you're the administrator of your MongoDB databases, you've likely received
requests to provide an individual user with the capabilities to perform
a certain action(s). MongoDB's security features are fairly mature now,
and allow you to create and assign very granular role-based access
control.
We're going to walk through an example of granting a user the specific
privilege of performing the reIndex action in a step-by-step approach through
its resolution. Before we demonstrate how to perform this comm... (more)
While personally, I believe the Sidekick disaster was just a stumbling block
in the embracing of cloud computing for many organizations, today’s news
that the newly formed alliance of SUN and Oracle was possibly to blame adds a
whole new dimension to the issue.
According to some reports the Sidekick service crash involved an Oracle RAC
database and Solaris and Linux servers. Currently unlike EMC who were quick
to retract the finger pointers, Oracle and Sun declined to respond to the
accusations.
To put a picture on the background of this scenario one needs to firstly look
at the Oracle RAC database, a single database set up which runs across a
cluster of servers for fault tolerance, performance and scalability reasons.
If reports are to be believed the outage mainly stemmed from the Sun servers
which led to the user data being inaccessible in the Oracle database and i... (more)
Finally Getting the Most out of the Java Thread Pool
By Eugen Paraschiv
First, let's outline a frame of reference for multithreading and why we may
need to use a thread pool.
A thread is an execution context that can run a set of instructions within a
process - aka a running program. Multithreaded programming refers to using
threads to execute multiple tasks concurrently. Of course, this paradigm is
well supported on the JVM.
Although this brings several advantages, primarily regarding the performance
of a program, multithreaded programming can also have disadvantages - such as
increased complexity of the code, concurrency issues, unexpected results and
adding the overhead of thread creation.
In this article, we're going to take a closer look at how the latter issue
can be mitigated by using thread pools in Java.
Why Use a Thread Pool?

BIRT 2.5.2 provides a variety of tools to construct reports to analyze data.
These include charts, aggregation elements, drill to detail capabilities,
nested tables, data cubes and crosstabs. These features are presented very
well in the AJAX based viewer when deployed to the web, supporting
pagination, table of contents, and exporting of data and contents to other
formats. Out of the box, BIRT supports exporting to HTML, paginated HTML,
WORD, PDF, PostScript, PPT, and Excel. BIRT also provides an extension point
to implement your own emitters. For an example of implementing an XML emitter
see Developing an Eclipse BIRT XML Report Rendering Extension or BIRT:
Writing an Emitter.
As stated earlier BIRT supports exporting to Excel. The BIRT Excel emitter
creates a Microsoft Office XML XLS document that can be opened in Microsoft

In recent months, we’ve ‘tested the limits’ with QA notables like
James Whittaker, Rosie Sherry and Andrew Muns. This month, we’re jumping
over to the dev side of the aisle by sitting down with Jack Margo, SVP of
Internet Operations at Developer Shed .
Developer Shed is owned by Ziff-Davis and manages a bunch of tech sites —
many devoted to open source technologies and communities. They serve
millions of visitors per month, for every breed of developer. Topics range
from troubleshooting an Apache web server to programming a complicated Java
application to successfully marketing a website. Their tagline says it all:
“Tools for Geeks!”
Today, we talk about what developers really think about testers, Jack’s
take on Microsoft vs. open source, the reason he’s mad at Java, why net
books are a fad, and which programming language has the biggest upside.

Dell EMC Announce Azure Stack Hybrid Cloud Solution
Dell EMC have announced their Microsoft Azure Stack hybrid cloud platform
solutions. This announcement builds upon earlier statements of support and
intention by Dell EMC to be part of the Microsoft Azure Stack community. For
those of you who are not familiar, Azure Stack is an on premise extension of
Microsoft Azure public cloud.
What this means is that essentially you can have the Microsoft Azure
experience (or a subset of it) in your own data center or data
infrastructure, enabling cloud experiences and abilities at your own pace,
your own way with control. Learn more about Microsoft Azure Stack including
my experiences with and installing Technique Preview 3 (TP3) here.
What Is Azure Stack
Microsoft Azure Stack is an on-premise (e.g., in your own data center)

Build It, Buy It, or Open Source: The Software Dilemma
By Matt Watson
One problem that all developers and companies struggle with is trying to
decide if they should "build it" or "buy it". Software developers love to
build things. That is what we do! Their natural reaction tends to lean
towards building things. We are also always up for a new challenge.
How do you know when you should build software or buy it?
There are very good reasons for building or buying software. There are also
good reasons to use open source projects, which is a third option!
Some things you never want to build
I started my last company in 2003. In the early days of that company, I
decided that it was easy enough to store customer credit card numbers in a
database table and process them via Authorize.net. Simple stuff, right?
Billing systems always seem simple. Until you have to figure out how to... (more)
@ThingsExpo Stories By Elizabeth White Product connectivity goes hand and hand these days with increased use of personal data. New IoT devices are becoming more personalized than ever before.
In his session at 22nd Cloud Expo | DXWorld Expo, Nicolas Fierro, CEO of MIMIR Blockchain Solutions, will discuss how in order to protect your data and privacy, IoT applications need to embrace Blockchain technology for a new level of product security never before seen - or needed. Feb. 12, 2018 02:30 PM EST Reads: 506 | By Elizabeth White When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
