How Serverless Computing Changes Cloud, and Your Job
In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud
services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud
Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have
already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are
employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework.

It's clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some
needed changes, within both application development and operations. That
means serverless is also changing the way we leverage public clouds.
Truth-be-told, many enterprise IT shops were so happy to get out of the
management of physical servers within a data center that many limitati... (more)
There is a war a-brewin’, but this war will be fought with wits and not
brute strength. Ever since Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declaration
that “the nation that leads in AI (Artificial Intelligence) will be the
ruler of the world,” the press and analysts have created hysteria regarding
the ramifications of artificial intelligence on everything from public
education to unemployment to healthcare to Skynet.
Note: artificial intelligence (AI) endows applications with the ability to
automatically learn and adapt from experience via interacting with the
surroundings / environment. See the blog “Artificial Intelligence is not
Fake Intelligence” for a more detailed explanation on artificial
intelligence and machine learning.

A strong declaration from a historically antagonist foe should put chills in
the hearts of Americans preparing themselves for the world ahead: Russian
President Vladimir Putin says the nation that leads in AI will be the ruler
of the world [1]” … The ruler of the world!
From the article (with some modification to avoid political landmines), we
get the following:
“The development of artificial intelligence has increasingly become a
national security concern in recent years. It is China and the US (not
Russia), which are seen as the two frontrunners, with China recently
announcing its ambition to become the global leader in AI research by 2030.
Many analysts warn that America is in danger of falling behind, especially as
the [current US] administration prepares to cut funding for basic science and
technology research.”

Automating Progress: The Future of Automation
By Chris Boorman
We've all read the dystopian fiction, watched those apocalyptic movies and
heard a myriad of prophetic warnings heralding our obsolescence. Surely now
we're just a couple of years from flipping the switch on a Skynet of our own
making and condemning mankind to the annals of history.
Actually, we're not entirely sure what the future holds, but it's probably
not fire and brimstone.
For detractors and naysayers of technology, could there be a more fitting
image than Terminator 2's opening shot? A hulking, skeletal, humanoid machine
crushing a human skull beneath its foot. Listening to ‘techno-skeptics' can
sure make it feel as though that's the end which inevitably awaits us. If we
continue down our current path of imbuing machines with increasing levels of
autonomy, learning abilities and artificial intelli... (more)

The Five Key Elements to Build, Deploy and Operationalize Artificial
Intelligence at Scale
The question before companies today is not whether to become intelligent,
it's a question of how and how fast. The key is to adopt and deploy an
intelligent application strategy while simultaneously preparing to scale that
intelligence.

End-to-End on the GPU: How to Vastly Parallel SQL, Visualization and Machine
Learning
Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science

tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and
limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and

Quick quiz!
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the following
phrases?
Artificial grass Artificial sweeteners Artificial flavors Artificial plants
Artificial flowers Artificial diamonds and jewelry Artificial (fake) news
These phrases probably evoke thoughts such as “fake,” “not real,” or
even “shabby.” Artificial is such a harsh adjective. The word
“artificial” is defined as “imitation; simulated; sham” with synonyms
such as fake, false, mock, counterfeit, bogus, phony and factitious.
The word “artificial” may not be the right term to use to describe
“Artificial Intelligence,” because “artificial intelligence” is
anything but fake, false, phony, or a sham. Maybe a better term is
“Augmented Human Intelligence,” or a phrase that highlights both the
importance of augmenting the human’s intelligence as well as to alleviate
the fears that AI means ... (more)

Kubernetes was originally built by Google, leveraging years of experience with managing container workloads, and is now a Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) project. Kubernetes has been widely adopted by the community, supported on all major public and private cloud providers, and is gaining rapid adoption in enterprises. However, Kubernetes may seem intimidating and complex ... Feb. 12, 2018 06:15 PM EST Reads: 2,952 | By Elizabeth White You know you need the cloud, but you're hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You're looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you're concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.

Feb. 12, 2018 02:00 PM EST Reads: 431 | By Liz McMillan DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE).
