professionals, authors...who, in short, are the people behind the cloud?
This list will be updated weekly between now and November 4-7, 2013, when
13th Cloud Expo | Cloud Expo Silicon Valley opens its doors in the Santa

iPhone Developer Summit on Ulitzer
Driven by the phenomenal success of the iPhone and the App Store, smartphone
app usage is finally taking off in the enterprise. Yet many developers are
still uncertain about how to create a great user experience for
information-intensive business apps on smartphones.
One approach is to examine instructive failures - that's to say, mobile sites
that are disastrous for one reason or another. In a 45-minute breakout
session at iPhone Developer Summit 2009 West, being held November 3rd, 2009,
at the Santa Clara Convention Center in conjunction with SYS-CON's 4th
International Cloud Computing Expo (November 2-4, 2009, Adam Blum, CEO of
Rhomobile - the open mobile framework based on Ruby and HTML - will be using
just such examples.
The session is titled "Best Practices in Smartphone Business Apps" and from
it delegates will learn general... (more)
Salesforce.com said Wednesday morning that it's buying Heroku, the Ruby and
Ruby on Rails application platform-as-a-service house, for $212 million cash
net of what the privately owned 30-man cloud player has on hand plus roughly
$27 million in stock and another $10 million in cash for unvested Heroku
shares. So that makes $249 million then.
According to Salesforce, Ruby is the language of what it calls Cloud 2 apps -
the currently popular social, collaborative, mobile, real-time stuff - and
Heroku's platform is built along the same multi-tenant lines as its own
Force.com platform.
Its acquisition is supposed to position Salesforce "as the cornerstone for
the next generation of app developers," according to CEO Marc Benioff.
Salesforce already supports Java applications via its VMForce alliance with
VMware.
Heroku makes money by hosting some 105,000 applications wr... (more)
Tоday I was participating in a discussion on one Java forum – the question
was if Java is an easy or difficult programming language to learn. IMO, Java
is not difficult to learn, to teach, and to use. It’s a strongly typed
compiled language with tools that help you identify most of the errors before
you even run the program.
While participating in this discussion I was writing code in a different
programming language called JavaScript, which gave me a chance to illustrate
a lot of things the Java developer takes for granted, while there are people
who work in a more hostile environment called JavaScript.
I had a working program, and decided to add a JavaScript handler function to
illustrate HTML form submission with jQuery for our upcoming book. I’ve
been writing this code in Eclipse-based IDE called Aptana. I’ve added this
handler for the submit event to a Donation... (more)
Here at AppNeta, we get to see a lot about how people build their web
applications. From simple PHP scripts to heavily service-oriented Java clouds
to monolithic Django apps, everybody’s product is architected a little
differently. We’re still out to trace everything, and today I want to talk
how to get visibility into an important component of any complex system: the
messaging queue. Specifically, let’s look at how to trace a job from Rails
using Resque.
Messaging Queues
If you haven’t used a messaging queue in your app, the idea is simple.
Instead of forcing all the work to happen during the request, while the user
is waiting, you can delay some of the more time-consuming tasks. You can do
anything in these tasks, ranging from a simple insert to kicking off a series
of user analytics that touch all parts of your infrastructure. The advantage
is that you can retur... (more)
Back in 2001 (wow – seems like yesterday!), F5 introduced the first-ever,
open/Web services API for network devices called iControl. With it, it
sparked a major shift in the way companies could look at integrating network
devices with applications. Leading software vendors figured it out. And,
thousands of companies since then have used iControl to build custom
monitoring apps, management solutions that more closely fit their internal
processes, and even automate some cool stuff including enabling applications
to tell the network how to deliver them.
While all fine and dandy (and fun to be a part of personally), the most
important decision and event was the willingness to embrace SOAP/XML. By
doing this (kudos to Joe Pruitt, BTW, for this call… it wasn’t without
some feisty internal debate, truth be told), it opened up API access to our
gear from virtually any SOAP... (more)

@ThingsExpo Stories By Elizabeth White When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
