Why Is the Healthcare Industry Abuzz About Blockchain?
Blockchain. A day doesn't seem to go by without seeing articles and
discussions about the technology. According to PwC executive Seamus Cushley,
approximately $1.4B has been invested in blockchain just last year. In
Gartner's recent hype cycle for emerging technologies, blockchain is
approaching the peak. It is considered by Gartner as one of the ‘Key
platform-enabling technologies to track.' While there is a lot of ‘hype vs
reality' discussions going on, there is no arguing that blockchain is being

This month, an AI (artificial intelligence) system passed a medical exam in
China for the first time. I wonder how its bedside manner will be? In
addition, Saudi Arabia granted citizenship to a robot named Sophia. With all
these rapid advancements, I think it is time we explore the spiritual life of
robots.
Up till recently, programmers coded and configured algorithms, AI, automation
and machine learning systems and took personal responsibility for all the
code. Today, however, AI has escaped the confines of human oversight and has
been empowered and employed to self-program, self-optimize, self-test,
self-configure and self-learn. David Gunning writes, "Continued advances [in
AI] promise to produce autonomous systems that will perceive, learn, decide,

As you have probably heard, the EU commission signed the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) back in April 2016. The legislation is designed to help companies handle efficiently the data challenges of the 21st century and give strict guidelines as to how to work with massive flows of digital information. It is set to protect web users (data subjects) from malicious use and loss of their personal info and, also, to give people greater control over how their records are processed.
I believe that this may finally be the year that the CIO role ‘crosses the Rubicon,' leaving behind its traditional, IT-focused orientation. But I don't believe that either of the previous predictions of this outcome — fading into oblivion or rising to a business executive level — is correct.
Instead, I think this is the year that we will see the role of the CIO transformed into something altogether different.
For many of us laboring in the fields of digital transformation, 2017 was a year of high-intensity work and high-reward achievement. So we’re looking forward to a little breather over the end-of-year holiday season.
But we’re going to have to get right back on the Continuous Delivery bullet train in 2018. Markets move too fast and customer expectations elevate too precipitously for businesses to rest on their laurels.
