Efficient Access to a Cloud-based HPC Visualization Cluster
Data scientists must access high-performance computing resources across a
wide-area network. To achieve cloud-based HPC visualization, researchers must
transfer datasets and visualization results efficiently.
Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here
HPC clusters now compute GPU-accelerated visualization in the cloud cluster.
To efficiently display results remotely, a high-performance, low-latency
protocol transfers the display from the cluster to a remote desktop. Further,
tools to easily mount remote datasets and efficiently transfer that data into
the HPC cluster are described, including performance characterization
results.
In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Brian Fromme, a solutions engineer at
Penguin Computing, discussed how together, high-performance data ... (more)
Test Automation with Software-Defined Servers
In their session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Michael Berman, VP
Engineering at TidalScale, and Ivo Jimenez, Engineer at TidalScale, will
describe how automating tests in TidalScale is easy thanks to WaveRunner.
They will show how they use WaveRunner, Jenkins, and Docker to have agile
delivery of TidalScale.
Speaker Bio
Michael Berman is VP Engineering at TidalScale. TidalScale is developing a
scale up compute and resource architecture for customers to perform big data
exploration and real time analytics. TidalScale's platform aggregates
commodity server hardware into a single coherent supercomputer. Prior to
TidalScale, he was CTO at Catbird Networks, where he was responsible for the
design and requirements for Catbird vSecurity, the industry leader in
security virtualization. Michael was previously a principal... (more)
How Access Management Protects Today's No-Perimeter Network
The rule of thumb for network security today is that there is no perimeter
anymore. An outsider can easily become an insider once perimeter security is
breached. Every day, attackers find new ways to breach enterprise perimeter
security through ransomware, malware or phishing through social engineering.
This is not to suggest that all is lost. Rather, organizations can defeat
cybercriminals, in part, by better managing what has already been put in
place. As an example of what can go wrong if that doesn't happen, consider
the following story.
On the way in to his office one day, Chris, the CSO of Big Deal Company, runs
into Kate from cryptography, who comments that their IT admin, Tim, has been
hard at work since about 5:00 a.m. This seems odd, since Tim is not known to
be a morning person. Kate says Tim requ... (more)
The VDI Landscape: What Came Before and What's Possible Now
Digital transformation can be exciting, but it also can be painful.
Organizations are trying to better support a growing mobile workforce that
needs the flexibility to work from anywhere on any device. The ability to do
so offers a distinct competitive advantage, as productivity soars.
Virtualizing applications and desktops has been an important step toward
achieving these productivity gains, but the first generation of virtual
desktop infrastructure (VDI) and application publishing solutions not only
failed to deliver on cost savings and streamlined IT promises, but they
contributed an overwhelming level of complexity that ballooned the operating
expenses of these implementations - an unpleasant surprise.
Now, many organizations that implemented these first-generation solutions
need to determine a migratio... (more)
Data efficiency - the combination of technologies including data
deduplication, compression, zero elimination and thin provisioning -
transformed the backup storage appliance market in well under a decade. Why
has it taken so long for the same changes to occur in the primary storage
appliance market? The answer can be found by looking back at the early
evolution of the backup appliance market, and understanding why EMC's Data
Domain continues to hold a commanding lead in that market today.
Data Efficiency Technologies
The term "data efficiency" encompasses a variety of different technologies
that enable the most effective use of space on a storage device by both
reducing wasted space and eliminating redundant information. These
technologies include thin provisioning, which is now commonplace in primary
storage, as well as less extensively deployed features such as co... (more)
The Telecom Marketing Journey: Monetizing Big Data with Hadoop
Forget the funnel. Your customers no longer adhere to that nice, neat linear
purchase model.
Stop looking at the calendar. They don't need yet another holiday offer,
event-themed promotion, or long weekend sale.
Don't plan on following them around like a heartbroken teenage sweetheart
either. Many of your customers (current and potential) will send your emails
straight to spam, unsubscribe from newsletters, block ads and refuse to share
their locations with you. (Well, they might share some data, but only if you
promise a big discount in return.)
So what's a marketer to do?
Cheer up! Communications Service Providers have the most important tool
necessary to communicate effectively with customers: Big Data.
McKinsey's DataMatics 2013 survey found that companies that extensively use
customer analytics are ... (more)
Modernizing Existing Infrastructure with Truly Heterogeneous Software-Defined
Storage
Let's face it, embracing new storage technologies, capabilities and upgrading
to new hardware often adds complexity and increases costs.
In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Seth Oxenhorn, Vice President of Business
Development & Alliances at FalconStor, will discuss how a truly heterogeneous
software-defined storage approach can add value to legacy platforms and
heterogeneous environments. The result reduces complexity, significantly
lowers cost, and provides IT organizations with improved efficiencies, all
while delivering real freedom and flexibility. Come learn how to #BeFree.

Based on Andi Mann's presentation at Cloud Expo 2013 Silicon Valley
IT organizations face a growing demand for faster innovation and new
applications to support emerging opportunities in social, mobile, growth
markets, Big Data analytics, mergers and acquisitions, strategic
partnerships, and more. This is great news because it shows that IT continues
to be a key stakeholder in delivering business service innovation. However,
it also means that IT must deliver new innovation despite flat budgets, while
maintaining existing services that grow more complex every day.
The 'Cloud of Clouds'
This is where cloud computing can help to deliver business outcomes,
especially if you look beyond just one or two cloud providers, to the almost
limitless variety of interconnected and intermediated cloud services - what I
call the 'cloud of clouds'. This is true especially for founda... (more)
Containerized Storage for the Enterprise Cloud
Containers allow for compute processes to be isolated from each other and
portable, but not all applications and solutions are run only in the compute
layer; many require the use of some storage. Deployment of software-defined
storage can be the first step in this evolution, providing portability and
scalability with persistent storage. This could be in the form of storage
that the containers connect to locally or in a remote or cloud location, or
it could be storage residing in the containers.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Michael Letschin, Field Chief Technology
Officer at Nexenta Systems, Inc., will examine the latest in "containerized"
storage and give the pros and cons of each.
Speaker Bio
Michael Letschin has more than 15 years of experience in the IT industry and
currently serves as the Field CTO for Nexenta. ... (more)
As I wrote earlier this year over at InfoWorld, Microsoft took another step
toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was
releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why
this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this
gives Microsoft.
Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop
locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked
its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly
different for some of the configurations -- I can't tell you how many nights
I have lost sleep because of environments being slightly different!
Development and hosting are two completely different things. What Microsoft
did is one-upped Google and Amazon.
The psychological advantage comes into play for companies that aren't 100 ... (more)
You've probably heard a multitude of things around hyperconvergence or
hyperconverged infrastructure as these are becoming hot new industry
buzzwords, but what do these terms really mean? Are vendors that say they
have hyperconverged infrastructure really living up to the promises of true
hyperconvergence or is it just marketing hype?
The terms "hyperconvergence" and "hyperconverged infrastructure" originated
in a meeting between Jeff Ready and Jason Collier of Scale Computing and Arun
Taneja of the Taneja Group. According to these three, the term was coined to
mean the inclusion of a virtualization hypervisor into a complete
infrastructure solution that included storage, compute, and virtualization.
Some have thought that hyperconverged is synonymous with terms like
ultraconverged or superconverged but that was not the intention.
If we hold this intended definition... (more)
