The CMP 2.0: Bringing Automation, Orchestration and Governance to Cloud
Native Apps and DevOps
As many know, the first generation of Cloud Management Platform (CMP)
solutions were designed for managing virtual infrastructure (IaaS) and
traditional applications. But that's no longer enough to satisfy evolving and
complex business requirements.

In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Scott Davis, Embotics CTO, explored how
next-generation CMPs ensure organizations can manage cloud-native and
microservice-based application architectures, while also facilitating agile
DevOps methodology. He explained how automation, orchestration and governance
are fundamental to managing today's hybrid cloud environments and are
critical for digital businesses to deliver services faster, with better user ... (more)
How Serverless Computing Changes Cloud, and Your Job
In a recent survey, Sumo Logic surveyed 1,500 customers who employ cloud
services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud
Platform (GCP). According to the survey, a quarter of the respondents have
already deployed Docker containers and nearly as many (23 percent) are
employing the AWS Lambda serverless computing framework.
It's clear: serverless is here to stay. The adoption does come with some
needed changes, within both application development and operations. That
means serverless is also changing the way we leverage public clouds.
Truth-be-told, many enterprise IT shops were so happy to get out of the
management of physical servers within a data center that many limitations of
the existing public IaaS clouds were forgiven. However, now that we've lived
a few years with public IaaS ... (more)

Migrating to Automated Infrastructure with Containers
Containers are rapidly finding their way into enterprise data centers, but
change is difficult. How do enterprises transform their architecture with
technologies like containers without losing the reliable components of their
current solutions?
In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 21st Cloud Expo, Tony Campbell, Director,
Educational Services at CoreOS, will explore the challenges organizations are
facing today as they move to containers and go over how Kubernetes
applications can deploy with legacy components, and also go over automated
capabilities provided by operators to auto-update Kubernetes with zero
downtime for current and secure deployments.

Three Digital Transformation Truths and One Great Myth
By Charles Araujo
It's conference season and, as you might expect, Jason and I have been on the
road covering a bunch of them. It's always great to see what the disruptive
players in the market are doing - and this year did not disappoint. But there
is one thing that repeatedly happens that just gets under my skin:
transformation-washing.
As Jason explained in a Forbes article over a year ago, ‘washing' is when a
vendor (or pundit) applies a buzzword loosely in an overt attempt to attach
themselves to its buzz. And transformation-washing is rampant.
At virtually every event vendors bombarded the attendees with all the reasons
that this tool or that solution was the driving force behind digital
transformation. Unquestionably, many of these tools are innovative and
represent genuine breakthroughs. But no tool, in a... (more)

Microservices: Choosing the Right Cloud, Services and Tools
We all know that end users experience the Internet primarily with mobile
devices. From an app development perspective, we know that successfully
responding to the needs of mobile customers depends on rapid DevOps - failing
fast, in short, until the right solution evolves in your customers'
relationship to your business. Whether you're decomposing an SOA monolith, or
developing a new application cloud natively, it's not a question of using
microservices - not doing so will be a path to eventual business failure.

Automating Progress: The Future of Automation
By Chris Boorman
We've all read the dystopian fiction, watched those apocalyptic movies and
heard a myriad of prophetic warnings heralding our obsolescence. Surely now
we're just a couple of years from flipping the switch on a Skynet of our own
making and condemning mankind to the annals of history.
Actually, we're not entirely sure what the future holds, but it's probably
not fire and brimstone.
For detractors and naysayers of technology, could there be a more fitting
image than Terminator 2's opening shot? A hulking, skeletal, humanoid machine
crushing a human skull beneath its foot. Listening to ‘techno-skeptics' can
sure make it feel as though that's the end which inevitably awaits us. If we
continue down our current path of imbuing machines with increasing levels of
autonomy, learning abilities and artificial intelli... (more)

Dec. 30, 2017 11:00 AM EST Reads: 1,707 | By Liz McMillan DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE).
Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and controlling infrastructure. The rise of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is part of that redefinition of operations vs development roles in organizations. Dec. 29, 2017 12:00 PM EST Reads: 2,805 | By Elizabeth White The next XaaS is CICDaaS. Why? Because CICD saves developers a huge amount of time. CD is an especially great option for projects that require multiple and frequent contributions to be integrated. But… securing CICD best practices is an emerging, essential, yet little understood practice for DevOps teams and their Cloud Service Providers. The only way to get CICD to work in a highly secure environment takes collaboration, patience and persistence. Building CICD in the cloud requires rigorous architectural and coordination work to minimize the volatility of the cloud environment and leverage the security features of the cloud to the benefit of the CICD pipeline. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder.
Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. This leads to a waste of cloud resources and increased operational overhead. Dec. 16, 2017 10:00 AM EST Reads: 1,854 | By Pat Romanski Vulnerability management is vital for large companies that need to secure containers across thousands of hosts, but many struggle to understand how exposed they are when they discover a new high security vulnerability. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, John Morello, CTO of Twistlock, addressed this pressing concern by introducing the concept of the “Vulnerability Risk Tree API,” which brings all the data together in a simple REST endpoint, allowing companies to easily grasp the severity of the vulnerability. He provided attendees with actionable advice related to understanding and acting on exposure due to new high severity vulnerabilities. Dec. 15, 2017 04:08 PM EST Reads: 1,347 | By Pat Romanski While some developers care passionately about how data centers and clouds are architected, for most, it is only the end result that matters.
