Build It, Buy It, or Open Source: The Software Dilemma
By Matt Watson
One problem that all developers and companies struggle with is trying to
decide if they should "build it" or "buy it". Software developers love to
build things. That is what we do! Their natural reaction tends to lean
towards building things. We are also always up for a new challenge.
How do you know when you should build software or buy it?
There are very good reasons for building or buying software. There are also
good reasons to use open source projects, which is a third option!
Some things you never want to build
I started my last company in 2003. In the early days of that company, I
decided that it was easy enough to store customer credit card numbers in a
database table and process them via Authorize.net. Simple stuff, right?
Billing systems always seem simple. Until you have to figure out how to... (more)
MongoDB, an open-source document store and most popular NoSQL database on the
market today, offers a variety of advanced features to administer security
over your MongoDB deployments. In this tutorial post, we're going to show
you how to set up role-based access control (RBAC) to manage user access
across your MongoDB systems for reIndex, mongodump and mongorestore.
If you're the administrator of your MongoDB databases, you've likely received
requests to provide an individual user with the capabilities to perform
a certain action(s). MongoDB's security features are fairly mature now,
and allow you to create and assign very granular role-based access
control.
We're going to walk through an example of granting a user the specific
privilege of performing the reIndex action in a step-by-step approach through
its resolution. Before we demonstrate how to perform this comm... (more)

I have been a little bit stubborn on my concession that cloud computing is
really going to be the wave of the future. Though lately I have been playing
with a lot of cloud related technologies and am hooked. Spin up 10 (or 100)
Linux servers in a minute from a web page with no real systems management
skills and then you start seeing the power of cloud computing. As I try to
get smarter on cloud computing I compiled the following list of resources

Most large organizations require dozens and sometimes hundreds of specialized
software tools to manage the lifecycle of the physical products or software
applications they create. It isn't hard to imagine the monumental waste these
organizations incur in attempting to manually coordinate the efforts of the
teams that use these many disparate tools to create a single product. Open
Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) is an open community for creating
specifications for integrating lifecycle activities across tools to address
this problem. Now imagine how much more happy and productive an organization
would be if all those tools could integrate via standard interfaces. In broad
strokes, this is the goal of the OSLC community.
The technical foundation for OSLC is based on the W3C Linked Data method of
publishing and accessing information and inspired by how the W... (more)
Open Source Tool Chains for Continuous Testing
The goal of Continuous Testing is to shift testing left to find defects
earlier and release software faster. This can be achieved by integrating a
set of open source functional and performance testing tools in the early
stages of your software delivery lifecycle.
There is one process that binds all application delivery stages together into
one well-orchestrated machine: Continuous Testing. Continuous Testing is the
conveyer belt between the Software Factory and production stages. Artifacts
are moved from one stage to the next only after they have been tested and
approved to continue. New code submitted to the repository is tested upon
commit. When tests fail, the code is rejected. Subsystems are approved as
part of periodic builds on their way to the delivery stage, where the system
is being tested as production ready.... (more)
Technology integration is complex and an evergreen business challenge for IT
teams. Enterprises setup manual & point to point connections to exchange data
from business partners. However, data disruptions emerge when the business IT
systems expand and prevents organizations from sharing data with partners.
Information exchange with this approach requires more resources and manpower
is required. For such scenarios, information solution experts recommend to
use the B2B data exchange tool to support the Electronic Data Interchange.
However, enterprises are struck in a dilemma to go for an in house or a b2b
solution. This blog will help you in deciding whether to develop an in-house
solution or a dedicated information solution
What the Information Solutions Experts Recommend
Organizations generally opt for a B2B data exchange tool considering a
request from partners, rat... (more)
