While walking around the office I happened upon a relatively new employee
dragging emails from his inbox into folders. I asked why and was told,
“I’m just answering emails and getting stuff off my desk.” An empty
inbox may be emotionally satisfying to look at, but in practice, you should
never do it. Here’s why.
I recently wrote a piece arguing that from a mathematical perspective, Messy
Desks Are Perfectly Optimized. While it validated the genius of my friends
with messy desks, it also generated a barrage of good-natured ribbing from my
super-neat friends. Emotions aside, the math is the math! By putting the last
paper you looked at on top of the pile, you are organizing your desk using an
algorithm called LRU (Least Recently Used). It is based on the idea that the
papers you most recently used are the ones you are most likely to use again.
Conversely, the papers ... (more)

Building the Future of Monitoring with Artificial Intelligence
Today we can collect lots and lots of performance data. We build beautiful
dashboards and even have fancy query languages to access and transform the
data. Still performance data is a secret language only a couple of people
understand. The more business becomes digital the more stakeholders are
interested in this data including how it relates to business. Some of these
people have never used a monitoring tool before. They have a question on
their mind like "How is my application doing" but no idea how to get a proper
answer.

An update to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is coming. Did I
lose you already? If you're not familiar with WCAG, it's a collection of
guidelines that developers, designers and accessibility experts use to help
ensure the apps and websites they create are accessible to people with
disabilities. The W3C has the latest guidelines published here.
As an active member of the Accessibility Guidelines Working Group at the W3C,
I'd like to share with you all what to expect in upcoming changes to these
guidelines, currently referred to as WCAG version 2.1. But, before we get
into the weeds about how 2.1 is different, let's review a history of WCAG as
it stands today:
Stay tuned for future posts and videos in this series where I dig in to
additional detail surrounding the WCAG 2.1 updates!

Top Reasons Your Organization Benefits from Cloud Bursting
When it comes to cloud computing, the ability to turn massive amounts of
compute cores on and off on demand sounds attractive to IT staff, who need to
manage peaks and valleys in user activity. With cloud bursting, the majority
of the data can stay on premises while tapping into compute from public cloud
providers, reducing risk and minimizing need to move large files.

In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Scott Jeschonek, Director of Product
Management at Avere Systems, discussed the IT and business benefits that
cloud bursting provides, including increased compute capacity, lower IT

What Is an Enterprise Health Cloud?
By Jikku Venkat
Digital transformation has changed the way users interact with the world, and
the traditional healthcare experience no longer meets rising consumer
expectations. Enterprise Health Clouds (EHCs) are designed to easily and
securely deliver the smart and engaging digital health experience that
patients expect today, while ensuring the compliance and data integration
that care providers require.
Enterprise Health Cloud Defined
Enterprise Health Clouds allow health care providers and payers, pharma,
biotech and medical device manufacturers to all deliver a secure and modern
digital experience to their patients, members and workforce. They provide
development accelerators in the form of SDKs, as well as cloud-based app
development and delivery services. EHCs also handle security,
interoperability and scalability, letting... (more)
Five Steps to Migrate Unisys Mainframes to AWS
By Craig Marble, Senior Director of Legacy Modernization, Astadia
Key Takeaways
- Cloud providers like AWS have proven to be a viable option for running
mainframe application workloads
- The most effective method to exploit the value of Unisys mainframe
applications and data is a transformative migration to modern systems
frameworks in AWS, reusing as much of the original application source as
possible.
- Execute a discover, design, modern, test, and implement cycle to move
mainframe applications.
- Some mainframe migration tools can keep existing code in place, but expect
to replace components and rethink data storage.
The Mainframe Conundrum
If you have a Unisys mainframe, you may be thinking that cloud computing
isn't an option. You'd like to take advantage of all that cloud computing
offers but don't think it's pos... (more)

Dec. 29, 2017 12:00 PM EST Reads: 2,364 | By Elizabeth White Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning. Dec. 29, 2017 11:00 AM EST Reads: 2,951 | By Elizabeth White The next XaaS is CICDaaS. Why? Because CICD saves developers a huge amount of time. The only way to get CICD to work in a highly secure environment takes collaboration, patience and persistence. Building CICD in the cloud requires rigorous ar... Dec. 29, 2017 08:45 AM EST Reads: 1,095 | By Liz McMillan DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
