What Is an Enterprise Health Cloud?
By Jikku Venkat
Digital transformation has changed the way users interact with the world, and the traditional healthcare experience no longer meets rising consumer expectations. Enterprise Health Clouds (EHCs) are designed to easily and securely deliver the smart and engaging digital health experience that patients expect today, while ensuring the compliance and data integration that care providers require.
Enterprise Health Cloud Defined
Enterprise Health Clouds allow health care providers and payers, pharma, biotech and medical device manufacturers to all deliver a secure and modern digital experience to their patients, members and workforce. They provide development accelerators in the form of SDKs, as well as cloud-based app development and delivery services. EHCs also handle security, interoperability and scalability, letting developers focus on the patient and connected care experience. This makes it easier to deliver successful digital healthcare experiences quickly.
An effective EHC should be a platform that enables a patient-centered and connected-care approach, making it easy to store and view patient information and to share and solicit feedback. It should make it simple to quickly develop apps for any device that patients will want to use, helping them manage their own care and providing the data needed for medical professionals and patients to make the best decisions along their healthcare journey. The EHC should provide the analytics and infrastructure that patients, payers, providers and pharma need to drive better outcomes at a lower cost.
On top of everything else, an EHC should also significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for healthcare providers, when compared with attempting to build the same experience from scratch.
Many EHCs offer some or all of this, with varying degrees of out-of-the-box readiness. Some approaches require organizations to assemble some components themselves, while others look to make immediate use of a solution with components that are pre-built for them and designed to be used on day one. To be considered fully-featured and comprehensive, an EHC should address each of the following components.
Key Features of an Enterprise Health Cloud
Securely Interact with Data
HIPAA Compliance
Dealing with Protected health information (PHI) in a secure and compliant manner is a critical challenge in the health care industry. EHCs must be HIPAA compliant and adhere to all required regulations regarding the handling of PHI.
In addition, it is crucial that patient and other health data is only seen by the people who are authorized to view it. EHCs are designed to make it easy to assign granular permissions and govern appropriate data access.
Integration with Electronic Health Record Solutions
An effective EHC needs to be able to smoothly integrate with patient data where it exists today. As most healthcare organizations are currently using an Electronic Health Record (EHR) solution to store and share their medical records with providers and patients, fast and simple data integration with EHRs is essential.
Easily Develop Useful App Experiences
Development Accelerators
Developers must be first-class citizens on an EHC platform. EHCs need to make it possible to quickly develop engaging digital experiences for your users by providing a robust set of development accelerators, including SDKs and app templates. This makes it easy to build apps for uses such as point-of-care support, care management or patient engagement.
Secure Cloud Storage
New digital experiences often mean new types of unstructured data. To store the data needed for your applications to operate intelligently and at scale, EHCs must provide secure access to cloud storage.
Gain Insights Quickly
Advanced Analytics
Powerful analytics are either embedded, or easily built-in, to applications on the EHC, such as usage statistics to improve the patient experience. It also allows a shift from reactive to predictive analytics.
A 360-Degree View
Organizations gain a 360-degree view of their patients, incorporating data from multiple sources and building a full profile. Easy access to this degree of information helps deliver better outcomes at a lower cost.
Delivering Innovation in Healthcare
Using an Enterprise Health Cloud allows an organization to deliver the kind of modern, connected care that users are looking for today. An EHC will speed up deployment of healthcare applications and simplify maintenance, scaling and securing, so that organizations can focus more on creative development. As the expectations of patients continue to rise, it’s vital that all healthcare segments be ready to quickly create personalized and easy-to-use experiences. This will not only ensure increased patient satisfaction, but it will provide better and more cost-effective care.
When evaluating an Enterprise Health Cloud, a key consideration should be the completeness of the solution and the support you’ll be receiving. While the ideal solution will depend on the needs of your organization, it is likely that your most effective option is to deploy a solution that gives you everything you need out-of-the-box from an organization that treats you like a partner. With the right EHC, you will significantly accelerate development and truly transform your digital experience.
