Windows Azure Recipe: Consumer Portal

Nearly every company on the internet has a web presence. Many are merely using theirs for informational purposes. More sophisticated portals allow customers to register their contact information and provide some level of interaction or customer support. But as our understanding of how consumers use the web increases, the more progressive companies are taking advantage of social web and rich media delivery to connect at a deeper level with the consumers of their goods and services. Drivers Cost reduction Scalability Global distribution Time to market Solution Here’s a sketch of how a Windows Azure Consumer Portal might be built out: Ingredients Web Role – this will host the core of the solution. Surviving a Datacenter Outage By @PagerDuty | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Surviving a Datacenter Outage By Amanda Folson PagerDuty was built around one simple idea: waking up the right people when things break. When an event is triggered, PagerDuty makes magic to notify the right person or team that something is wrong. However, ensuring that the message makes it out of our pipeline to you isn’t so simple. Because we’re providing notifications when your systems are down, there’s a pretty big constraint on us to be up. If you can’t trust us, who can you trust? We rely on a few distributed technologies in our alerting pipeline because they offer us the redundancy we need to ensure alerts make it to users. We’ve spent a lot of time architecting our infrastructure to be as fault-tolerant as possible in order to provide durable and consistent read/write operations in our critical alerting pipeline. This pipeline starts with an event endpoint ... (more)

Will PR Firms Survive The New Media Avalanche?

http://twitter.com/fuatkircaali Last week I received an email from Lindsey Miller at Ragan Communications. I answered her questions for a story she was working on here. The following is the full text of my reply to her on this subject. What kinds of PR firm will survive the "fast-approaching new media avalanche"? What steps will firms have to take to ensure that they make it through? I know a lot of PR firms that are chasing new accounts among publicly traded companies, which are seen as cash cows in the business. I also know a lot of firms whose sales teams are larger than their senior account staff which will actually get the job done. These firms have armies of new college-grad telemarketers spitting out press releases to the media. For a while you can get away with both approaches. Once the laws, rules and regulations change, the first group of PR firms will disapp... (more)

The Top 250 Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010) being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time to give my earlier list a complete overhaul. Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the Cloud Ecosystem. I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing. Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

Everything Azure | @CloudExpo @HanuSoftware #IoT #DigitalTransformation

Empowering the Enterprise to Take Full Advantage of Everything Azure The cloud era has reached the stage where it is no longer a question of whether a company should migrate, but when. Enterprises have embraced the outsourcing of where their various applications are stored and who manages them, saving significant investment along the way. Plus, the cloud has become a defining competitive edge. Companies that fail to successfully adapt risk failure. The media, of course, continues to extol the virtues of the cloud, including how easy it is to get there. Migrating to the cloud is a simple affair - just call up a cloud provider and your wishes come true. The reality is quite different, however, as enterprises struggle with a wide variety of migration issues, from security to overtaxed IT teams and everything in-between. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Collin Steele, ... (more)

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things’). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing? IoT is not about the devices, it’s about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. In his session at Internet of Things at Cloud Expo | DXWor...
