Privacy and Security on Blockchains: What Protection Measures the Networks
Are Adopting to Secure Their Users
Decentralization of everything, the great new idea of which the web can’t
stop babbling, might still seem a bit utopian if you inspect it closely.
Yes, blockchains are likely to reshape our economy, or a huge part of it, and
benefit considerably those who are currently unbanked.
They might also facilitate the creation of rating/reputation systems that are
not controlled by any single entity and thus allow people (say Uber drivers
who’d like to work for Lyft) to switch employers without having to
establish their credibility anew.
They might give users complete control over their assets; protect them, to a
degree, from being robbed and provide tools to sustain privacy even when a
state-level actor – a bank or a government – is after their identity.
But before t... (more)
Bitcoins are a digital cryptocurrency and have been around since 2009. As a
substitute for legal tender, they are becoming a rage for investors and
others but because there is no government agency auditing or performing
regulatory oversights, you wonder if it is the perfect breeding ground for
electronic nanocrime?
Since the introduction of the Bitcoin, some competitors have emerged and the
whole segment of cryptocurrencies are defined as Altcoins. Altcoins include:
Dogecoin, Ethereum, Feathercoin, Litecoin, Monero, Novacoin, Peercoin, and
Zetacoin. Some of these cryptocurrencies are considered improvements on the
original Bitcoin algorithm structure, and they are gaining some traction as
well.
Some financial experts and analysts, including Warren Buffett and Ben Stein,
are leery of the overall cryptocurrency market. Is it because it doesn't fit

Our work, both with clients and with tools, has lead us to wonder how it is
that organizations are handling compliance issues in the cloud. The big cloud
vendors offer compliance for their infrastructure, but the shared
responsibility model requires that you take certain steps to meet compliance
requirements.
Which lead us to start poking around a little more. We wanted to get a
picture of what was available, and how it was being used. There is a lot of
fluidity in this space, as in all things cloud. The fact that DevOps Security
plays into the cloud compliance model – particularly in dynamic cloud
environments – makes it even more fluid.
We’ve found the following options are the ones most frequently being
pursued in cloud deployments for industries that need to meet compliance
requirements.

European Data Regulations with Global Reach: What Is GDPR in Reality and Why
Should We Care?
With tough new regulations coming to Europe on data privacy in May 2018,

The enterprise data storage marketplace is poised to become a battlefield. No
longer the quiet backwater of cloud computing services, the focus of this
global transition is now going from compute to storage. An overview of recent
storage market history is needed to understand why this transition is
important.
Before 2007 and the birth of the cloud computing market we are witnessing
today, the on-premise model hosted in large local data centers dominated
enterprise storage. Key marketplace players were EMC (before the Dell
acquisition), NetApp, IBM, HP (before they became HPE) and Hitachi. Company
employees managed information technology resources (compute, storage,
network) and companies tightly controlled their data in facilities they
managed. Data security, legal and regulatory concerns, for the most part,
were very localized. The data itself was highly structur... (more)
Every time there’s a notable cybersecurity breach, someone (even me) writes
a comprehensive primer on the proper way to create “secure” passwords.
Lather, rinse, repeat. Until a few years ago, everyone (including me) based
their password advice on a 2003 paper from the National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST), with the catchy title “NIST Special
Publication 800-63.” The paper recommended that passwords be cryptic,
contain special characters, and be as close to nonsense as possible.
I was in a camp I called “How to Make a Cryptic Password You Can Easily
Remember.” The short version was this: take a phrase you know, such as a
favorite quote from a movie, and use the first letter of each word. For
example, Sheriff Brody’s famous line from Jaws, “I think we’re gonna
need a bigger boat,” becomes [email protected] The trick was using Leet (a
technique where letters ... (more)
Three Ruling Technology Trends to Watch Out for in 2018
As we head into a new year, IT improvements and management should be top of
mind for any business looking to amp up their customer experience, delivery
and service in 2018. Recently, at CA World ‘17, I talked about how every
business strategy is now an IT strategy. With that in mind, I have a few
predictions for 2018 that I encourage companies to have on their to-do list
as they look to find greater success in the new year.
#1 It's all about DevSecOps
Security will remain top of mind for customers, but the software development
lifecycle will now need to integrate security from start to finish in a
seamless way. The need for speed and velocity with quality in development has
created a "shift-left" movement that integrates security from the start,
which needs to be easy and accessible for developers as they write c... (more)
Layered Defense in the Connected World
The National Cyber Security Awareness Month is transitory, but many of the
decisions we have made around the adoption of technology within our personal
and business have brought with them risks that will stay with us for a while.
A good example of this is the deployment and proliferation of ‘smart' or
‘connected' devices - IoT.
The Internet of Things (IoT) has promised us more personalized and automated
services, optimized resource utilization, and added convenience, but we
haven't always stopped to consider the risks that come with the benefits?
The number of connected devices has grown at an unprecedented rate with
current estimates at between 6-12 billion devices. This number seems enormous
but if you doubt it, I suggest you login into your home router and look at
how many devices are registered - you may be surprised when yo... (more)
Understanding Cloud Complexities and Avoiding "Cloud Fatigue"
We're seeing an emerging trend in the cloud computing world. I've been
referring to it as cloud fatigue, but it's more commonly known as
repatriation, or moving workloads from the cloud back to on-prem locations.
According to a recent 451 Research report, over 21 percent of organizations
have plans to pull back from the cloud and return to an on-prem
infrastructure in 2017. Considering the vast growth of cloud adoption over
the last several years, what's behind this trend?
We believe cloud fatigue is the result of deployments going awry. It usually
happens when companies quickly adopt one of the leading public cloud
platforms (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, etc.) because they're
attracted to the promises of ease-of-use, flexibility and low computing
costs. What happens next depends on a myriad of f... (more)
