Security of Smart Things
With the introduction of IoT and Smart Living in every aspect of our lives,
one question has become relevant: What are the security implications? To
answer this, first we have to look and explore the security models of the
technologies that IoT is founded upon.

Keeping your enterprise data safe and secure is more important now than it
ever has been. IT has always been an ever-changing industry, but in recent
years, it has been changing more and more quickly. Now, thanks to the cloud,
big data, and mobile devices all expanding at once, it may seem like the
entire IT field is completely different every other day. This means your
company is going to almost always be re-evaluating and upgrading your network
security tools and methods. It's hard to deal with the current threats to
your data, never mind prepare for new ones.
Fortunately, while it is stressful to keep up with this changing world, it's
not impossible. If your team is up to the challenge and is dedicated to
protecting your network and the big data you collect, it is possible. Here
are five techniques you can use to eliminate a large number of threats and

What Is DevSecOps? How to Automate Security Testing
By Matt Watson
Every company wants to see their company getting press and media attention.
Unless it is due to a hacker and a security breach. Every few weeks you see
in the media stories of companies who were hacked. Getting a new credit card
every few months because the data was hacked has been routine for most of us.
The more that our world revolves around the internet and technology, the more
cyber security becomes a big deal.
Software applications are complex and can potentially have lots of different
types of security issues. The issues range from bad code to misconfigured
servers and everything in between. Solving this problem requires everyone to
always be thinking about security implications of what they are working on.
DevSecOps is a new movement to do just that. The goal is to get developers to
be thinki... (more)

Fly Two Mistakes High - Keeping High Availability in the Cloud
When building large, cloud-based applications that operate at a high scale,
it's important to maintain a high availability and resilience to failures. In
order to do that, you must be tolerant of failures, even in light of failures
in other areas of your application.
Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here
"Fly two mistakes high" is an old adage in the radio control airplane hobby.
It means, fly high enough so that if you make a mistake, you can continue
flying with room to still make mistakes.
In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect
and Advocate at New Relic, discussed how this same philosophy can be applied
to highly scaled applications, and can dramatically increase your resilience
to failure.

According to a recent Gartner study, by 2020, it will be unlikelythat any
enterprise will have a "no cloud" policy, and hybrid will be the most common
use of the cloud. While the benefits of leveraging public cloud
infrastructures are well understood, the desire to keep critical workloads
and data on-premise in the private data center still remains. For
enterprises, the hybrid cloud provides a best of both worlds solution.
However, the leading factor that determines the preference to the hybrid
cloud, among other things, is "security." Moreover, as the growth of the
public cloud infrastructure continues, it is not hard to observe two key
directions of focus by the cloud providers, namely:
The geographical expansiveness of their public cloud infrastructure to grow
the number of availability zones The richness of their services catalog to
ensure cloud adopters are n... (more)
Join us at Cloud Expo June 6-8 to find out how to securely connect your cloud
app to any cloud or on-premises data source - without complex firewall
changes.
More users are demanding access to on-premises data from their cloud
applications. It's no longer a "nice-to-have" but an important differentiator
that drives competitive advantages. It's the new "must have" in the hybrid
era.
Users want capabilities that give them a unified view of the data to get
closer to customers and grow business. They're dealing with greater volumes
of data than ever before, and much of this resides behind corporate
firewalls. Traditional approaches for exposing this data, such as VPN and SSH
tunneling are difficult to manage and not engineered for the cloud.
If you want to create a frictionless data access experience for your
customers, join us at Cloud Expo, June 6-8 in New York City.... (more)

with a chance to see a live demonstration of the common tools cyber attackers
use to attack cloud and traditional IT systems.
This "Live Hack" useds open source attack tools that are free and available
for download by anybody. Attendees learned where to find and how to operate
these tools for the purpose of testing their own IT infrastructure. They also
witnessed a cyber-attack from both sides - attacker and defender. An inside

Will the IoT Be the Death of Us?
Unsecured IoT devices were used to launch crippling DDOS attacks in October
2016, targeting services such as Twitter, Spotify, and GitHub. Subsequent
testimony to Congress about potential attacks on office buildings, schools,
and hospitals raised the possibility for the IoT to harm and even kill
people. What should be done? Does the government need to intervene? In this
power panel at @ThingExpo New York, moderated by Conference Chair Roger
Strukhoff, leading IoT and security experts will discuss this very serious
topic.

Why should the enterprise SaaS consumer pay for the SaaS service if their data is resident in adjacent AWS S3 buckets? If both SaaS sellers and buyers are using the same cloud tools, automation and pay-per-transaction model offered by IaaS platforms, then why not host the “shrink-wrapped” software in the customers’ cloud? Further, serverless computing, cl... Jun. 19, 2017 10:00 AM EDT Reads: 2,156 | By Elizabeth White When growing capacity and power in the data center, the architectural trade-offs between server scale-up vs. scale-out continue to be debated. Both approaches are valid: scale-out adds multiple, smaller servers running in a distributed computing model, while scale-up adds fewer, more powerful servers that are capable of running larger workloads. It’s worth noting that there are additional, unique advantages that scale-up architectures offer. One big advantage is large memory and compute capacity...
