Systems of Innovation for Ongoing Digital Transformation
Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in
business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo.
It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new
opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before.
So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition?
Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study
that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the
globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider
the digital business transformation outlook in 2017.
Introduction to the Torchbearer CIO
CIOs realize the barriers between formerly distinct industries are
collapsing, as organizations in one sector apply their expertise to others ... (more)
How Microsoft Is Making Big Impact with Machine Learning
During the last two years, Microsoft has upped the ante on Machine Learning
and Analytics. From hiring top notch data scientists to acquiring niche
startups, Redmond has made the all the right moves to transform Azure into
one of the best analytics platforms. These investments have started to pay
off for the company. It has been successful in articulating and demonstrating
the value of data-driven insights to governments, medical institutions, and
public sector organizations.
Emerging markets that are turning technology savvy are becoming the hotbed
for evaluating the upcoming trends such as Machine Learning and Artificial
Intelligence. With its strong presence in India, Microsoft is partnering with
the state and central government to bring the benefits of technology to the
masses. The company is making Cloud,... (more)
As I wrote earlier this year over at InfoWorld, Microsoft took another step
toward being king of the cloud hill when it announced in January that it was
releasing its Azure stack to the public. There are many technical reasons why
this is cool, but more importantly, it's the psychological advantage this
gives Microsoft.
Google has always had the ability for developers using its stack to develop
locally on the same tools that run in Google App Engine. It recently forked
its environments, so now the local and cloud environments are slightly
different for some of the configurations -- I can't tell you how many nights
I have lost sleep because of environments being slightly different!
Development and hosting are two completely different things. What Microsoft
did is one-upped Google and Amazon.
The psychological advantage comes into play for companies that aren't 100 ... (more)
Cloud providers Google, AWS and Microsoft are doing some spring-cleaning -
out with the old, in with the new - when it comes to pricing services.
With the latest cuts, here's a news flash: There's a new business model
driving cloud that is every bit as exponential in growth -- with order of
magnitude improvements to pricing -- as Moore's Law has been to computing.
Let's call it "Bezos' Law," and go straight to the math
Bezos' law is the observation that, over the history of cloud, a unit of
computing power price is reduced by 50% approximately every 3 years
If Bezos' law reflects reality, most enterprises should dump their
datacenters and move to the public cloud. Let's factor in recent events.
Google was first to announce "deep" cuts in on-demand instance pricing across
the board. GigaOm's Barb Darrow was quick to capture the excitement: And
bam: Google cuts on-dema... (more)
Another year has gone by. Merry X-mas and Happy New Year everyone. It is time
to update my book recommendation blog.
This year's list will have a few new book topics added to list. I have
ventured in iOS, Java, Android and Windows Store development, so along with
all the usual Microsoft topics you will find recommendations for those topics
as well.
There have been a ton of books come out this year both good and bad. Be sure
to check out the Shiny Turds book section which lists books that do not Cut
the Mustard *-Do not Buy-* section. It is the last in the list.
These are all books I have read or have on pre-order (based on previous
editions) and plan to use when they are released in the very near future. I
have reviewed a lot of them here on this blog and on Amazon.

Many years ago I prepared my first PowerPoint slide deck and used it as
visuals in front of a small audience.
Over the last twenty years I made tons of presentations on IT related
subjects. In this blog I’d like to share with you a dozen rules I use while
preparing my slide decks or speak. Please add your comments with more tips to
rookie presenters.
Tip #1: The font has to be as large as possible – not less than 18pt for
the text and 12 points for code listing. If you can’t fit the entire code
fragment on one slide, split it in two or create two code panels on the same
slide.
Tip #2: Do not abuse effects and transitions like spinning, rolling, fading
slides or texts. Using them once in while is fine, but keep the attention of
your audience by the quality content and not by showing them how your slides
dance on the screen.
Tip #3: Don’t use multi-color master slide... (more)

To the President of Syria, Mr. and Mrs. Bashar al-Assad
Mr. and Mrs. President Bashar al-Assad:
At the tender age of 17 months my severely ill daughter Sofia, an American
citizen, was abducted by her mother on Monday, July 26, in Istanbul, Turkey,
and taken to Syria.
Fox News: ▸ video ▸ story
I was informed yesterday by Sofia's mother that she will not be coming back
to the United States nor will she allow Sofia to return home.
Sofia has been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that requires
immediate treatment in the United States. It was scheduled to start on July
27, 2010, in New Jersey, the day after her abduction and was supposed to last
until she reaches the age of 3.
Any delay in the urgently needed treatment will result in a life-long
disability for Sofia and make her dependent for the whole of her a... (more)
On the day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 12,000 for the first
time since June 2008, it was impossible not to correlate the eloquence and
optimism of President Obama's "State of the Union" speech on Tuesday night
with the restoration of a sense of perspective and hope in the USA about the
future.
Obama grasped the nettle full-on. "We are poised for progress," he declared,
adding:
"Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock
market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is
growing."
As one blogger expressed it, though - and he is a former Goldman Sachs trader
called Tyler Durden, so he ought to know wheref he speaks:
"There was a massive pink elephant in the room called reality though."
Durden's gripe is with what he deems to be the unreality of Obama's praising
Google and Facebook so highly in an Ameri... (more)
