What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the following
phrases?
Artificial grass Artificial sweeteners Artificial flavors Artificial plants
Artificial flowers Artificial diamonds and jewelry Artificial (fake) news
These phrases probably evoke thoughts such as “fake,” “not real,” or
even “shabby.” Artificial is such a harsh adjective. The word
“artificial” is defined as “imitation; simulated; sham” with synonyms
such as fake, false, mock, counterfeit, bogus, phony and factitious.
The word “artificial” may not be the right term to use to describe
“Artificial Intelligence,” because “artificial intelligence” is
anything but fake, false, phony, or a sham. Maybe a better term is
“Augmented Human Intelligence,” or a phrase that highlights both the
importance of augmenting the human’s intelligence as well as to alleviate
the fears that AI means ... (more)
This month, an AI (artificial intelligence) system passed a medical exam in
China for the first time. I wonder how its bedside manner will be? In
addition, Saudi Arabia granted citizenship to a robot named Sophia. With all
these rapid advancements, I think it is time we explore the spiritual life of
robots.
Up till recently, programmers coded and configured algorithms, AI, automation
and machine learning systems and took personal responsibility for all the
code. Today, however, AI has escaped the confines of human oversight and has
been empowered and employed to self-program, self-optimize, self-test,
self-configure and self-learn. David Gunning writes, "Continued advances [in
AI] promise to produce autonomous systems that will perceive, learn, decide,
and act on their own." That's a problem, not only with me, but with Karma.
A simplistic definition of Karma is a s... (more)

The Five Key Elements to Build, Deploy and Operationalize Artificial
Intelligence at Scale
The question before companies today is not whether to become intelligent,
it's a question of how and how fast. The key is to adopt and deploy an
intelligent application strategy while simultaneously preparing to scale that
intelligence.

Consider the Human Side of IT
By Jennifer Streck
Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, software-defined networking,
Hyperconverged Infrastructure, the cloud. These are all technological
advancements intended to improve how IT systems and operations work, to give
the business better agility and reduced costs, and ultimately to give
end-users a new and better experience. Quite often, however, IT’s creators
and consumers alike lose sight of the impact that these technologies have on
the human element of IT.
The human element should be a key consideration in every technological
development.
Technology developers cannot afford to forget the human element of the
product equation. For example, many organizations ideally want to focus on
business innovation, as opposed to IT infrastructure management and
troubleshooting — directly building their top-line rather than re... (more)
Today's hyper-connectivity of both people and things has led to an enormous
jump in network traffic. Global IP traffic will increase nearly threefold
over the next five years. It's not going to lessen, nor is it going to get
slower. These factors create a need for high-speed networks to ensure service
level and capacity. 100G network links are deployed by telecom networks and
data centers, serving hundreds of thousands of users, so that these providers
can keep pace with customer demand. This then creates the need to test and
troubleshoot on the networks at 100G link speed.
Why network traffic replay is helpful
Quality and maturity are critical when deploying new solutions today because
there are so many services and subscribers depending on stable data networks.
Testing new network solutions or new versions of networking products or
applications is a challenge becau... (more)
Cloud computing innovation will power enterprise transformation in 2018.
Cloud growth is also driving a rapid rise in the storage market, exacerbating
the enterprise challenge around storage cost and complexity. The business
reason behind this marketplace reality is the proliferation of real-time data
from the web, mobile devices, social media, sensors, log files, and
transactional applications. Big Data has also found a home on the operational
side of many market verticals in applications ranging from fraud detection to
the processing of video evidence.
Originally coined to describe datasets whose size stretched beyond the
ability of traditional databases to manage, the term's scope has
significantly expanded to include technology and services that capture,
store, manage and analyze extensive collections of data, to solve complex
problems. Despite concerns regard... (more)
"The reason Tier 1 companies are coming to us is we're able to narrow the gap
where custom applications need to be built. They provide a lot of services,
like IBM has Watson, and they provide a lot of hardware but how do you bring
it all together? Bringing it all together they have to build custom
applications and that's the niche that we are able to help them with,"

From our perspective as consumers, perhaps the best thing about digital
transformation is how consumerization is making technology so much easier to
use. Sure, our television remote controls still have too many buttons, and I
have yet to figure out the digital display in my Honda, but all in all, tech
is getting easier for everybody.
Within companies - even very large ones - the consumerization of technology
is gradually taking hold as well. There are now simple mobile apps for a wide
range of big company tasks, ranging from changing your benefits to replacing
a security badge.
As enterprise denizens know all too well, however, there is still plenty of
technology that's too hard to use. For every intuitive, AI-driven user
interface, there are dozens of arcane, menu or tab-driven monstrosities from
the last millennium, raising our blood pressure and slowing us down.... (more)

In a recent post, titled "10 Surprising Facts About Cloud Computing and What
It Really Is", Zac Johnson highlighted some interesting facts about cloud
computing in the SMB marketplace:
Cloud Computing is up to 40 times more cost-effective for an SMB, compared to
running its own IT system. 94% of SMBs have experienced security benefits in
the cloud that they didn't have with their on-premises service Recovery times
for SMB are four times faster for businesses using cloud computing when
compared to those not utilizing cloud services. For SMB, energy use and
carbon emissions could be cut by 90% by using cloud computing, saving the
environment and energy costs.
These advantages show a strong indication that SMB information technology
should be dominated by the adoption of cloud computing services. Although
one of the most prominent of these cloud services is Microsoft'... (more)

The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things’). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing? IoT is not about the devices, it’s about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits.
