In today's digitized world, a software glitch can create chaos. For example, in July 2017, a glitch caused the stock prices of blue-chip Nasdaq companies such as Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, eBay and Microsoft to be misreported on websites long after that day's closing bell.
Even though the real-world prices of the stocks were unchanged, the sites showed some had taken a nosedive in price and others had nearly doubled. Unsurprisingly, investors were rattled and took to social media to debate the false listings, dragging company names into a cloud of suspicion over something that had never happened.
Software glitches are increasingly common and equally unnerving. Recent research revealed that software failures in the U.S. cost the economy $1.1 trillion in assets in 2016. In total, software failures at 363 companies affected 4.4 billion customers and caused more than three and a half years of lost time. In a world where customers and time are of paramount value, this is an alarming reality.
Shrinking development cycles
Software releases are the greatest cause of downtime (and glitches) across all industries. And at the same time, organizations are being forced to choose between agility and risk, causing many of the quality checks put in place to prevent glitches to come under greater pressure.
Software development methodologies are becoming more agile making long lifecycles a thing of the past. Timelines are frequently measured in weeks or days and projects are often in a perpetual state of testing and release. As a result, the next version of the code can be ready for testing and staging when teams are still deploying the last version to production.
Developing for mobile applications is also speeding up and complicating development cycles. For example, customer-facing applications may suddenly need to access a new location service or require a location service to connect them to other users. The difference between a mobile app being adopted or ignored can depend on its ability to rapidly adapt to new features. And with mobile projects targeting multiple mobile platforms simultaneously, it is impossible to reach a point where a mobile app can stop responding to changes in a platform.
Timelines are being shortened because cloud computing and DevOps infrastructure-as-a-code approaches radically reduce the setup time for infrastructure and the effort required to configure it. This creates a landscape where code can ship as soon as it is ready to go.
Quality engineering is beginning to overshadow the importance of quality assurance and blur the relationship between application development and the teams that focus on testing and certifying software and its release. Quality engineers are increasingly embedded with application developers so that acceptance testing can begin in the earliest stages of the life cycle.
What is the solution?
Short of developing a software system that requires no changes at all businesses need to consider other ways to reduce the potential for glitches that emerge at a later date and cause disruptions (as well as embarrassment).
Adopting a streamlined approach utilizing predictable, high-quality, automated enterprise software delivery would help cut down delivery delays and glitches. And by implementing end-to-end release management, organizations can manage software delivery across the entire enterprise release portfolio as well as throughout the lifecycle of each release, including planning, approval and execution.
Testing is another integral part of the process. Modern enterprise test management tools can support the complete software testing process in all types of development methodologies. They can use a single platform for all projects by consolidating testing design, planning, manual and automated execution, defect tracking and progress reporting.
Aligning development and delivery
By implementing enterprise release management technology, organizations can enable systems to adapt to environments created by more accelerated methodologies found in many Fortune 500 companies. Enterprise release management tools can accelerate delivery and maintain the integrity of the software and stability without compromising the speed of production. With an enterprise release management platform, companies can scale to meet exponentially increasing release demands.
The software development cycle is becoming increasingly agile, but for many organizations the delivery management process struggling to keep pace and deliver a continuous delivery approach. Businesses should look to modern enterprise release management technology for help matching development with delivery. Unless enterprises take steps to align the two more effectively, the risk of software glitches and downtime will likely increase.
