Systems of Innovation for Ongoing Digital Transformation
Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in
business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo.
It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new
opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before.
So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition?
Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study
that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the
globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider
the digital business transformation outlook in 2017.
Introduction to the Torchbearer CIO
CIOs realize the barriers between formerly distinct industries are
collapsing, as organizations in one sector apply their expertise to others ... (more)

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the most profound change in personal and
enterprise IT since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago.
All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices -
computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by
2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several
decades.
With major technology companies and startups seriously embracing IoT
strategies, now is the perfect time to attend @ThingsExpo in Silicon Valley.

Extend User Experience of WebRTC with Unique Sensor Devices
WebRTC is great technology to build your own communication tools. It will be
even more exciting experience it with advanced devices, such as a 360 Camera,
360 microphone, and a depth sensor camera.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Masashi Ganeko, a manager at INFOCOM
Corporation, will introduce two experimental projects from his team and what
they learned from them.
"Shotoku Tamago" uses the robot audition software HARK to track speakers in
360 video of a remote party. "Virtual Teleport" uses a multiple Intel
RealSense Depth Camera to scan 3D and build 3D models in real-time, and
display as hologram in front of remote participants.

PostFinance, the Swiss Post Office bank, has closed the account that
WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange opened after PayPal late Friday closed the one
the renegade site has been using to collect donations.
The Swiss Post bank said Monday morning that it found "Assange provided false

The statement on the bank's web site adds that "The Australian citizen
provided false information regarding his place of residence during the
account opening process. Assange entered Geneva as his domicile. Upon
inspection, this information was found to be incorrect. Assange cannot
provide proof of residence in Switzerland and thus does not meet the criteria

Cloud Computing on Ulitzer
Amazon EC2 offers the CloudWatch service to monitor cloud instances as well
as load balancers. While this service comes at some cost
(0,015$/hour/instance) it offers useful infrastructure metrics about the
performance of your EC2 infrastructure. While there are commercial and free
tools out there which provide this service, you might not want to invest in
them or add another tool to your monitoring infrastructure.
This post will provide step-by-step guidance on how to extend your monitoring
solution to retrieve cloud metrics. The code sample is based on the free and
open-source dynaTrace plugin for agent-less cloud monitoring. Some parts
however have been simplified or omitted in tutorial. The major parts that are
missing in this sample are dynamic discovery of EC2 instances and an
algorithm which is a bit more reliable and accurate in retri... (more)
In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010)
being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time
to give my earlier list a complete overhaul.
Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the
Cloud Ecosystem.
I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this
year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and
continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of
enterprise computing.
Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various
services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web
sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be
sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them
in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)
The US Federal Communications Commission has recently reported that "theft of
digital information has become the most commonly reported fraud, surpassing
physical theft." Businesses can do a lot to protect themselves. The FCC
issued a Tip Sheet for small businesses to promote employee security
training, firewalls, securing of WiFis, and more. But for business operating
in (or migrating to) cloud environments; data security, cloud computing
security issues, and challenges take on new meanings and require new
strategies.
Security in the Cloud: Unique Challenges
In the cloud, data security poses new risks and challenges. We are no longer
concerned just with burglars breaking into our offices to steal computers,
but rather with the data belonging to complete systems deployed to the cloud.
When using public cloud infrastructure like that of AWS, VMware, Microsoft
Azure... (more)
MySQL Session at Cloud Expo
Oracle’s reaching out to customers to defend its acquisition of Sun and its
MySQL open source database has spooked alienated MySQL creator Monty Widenius
and his spokesman Florian Mueller, both of them enriched by Sun’s billion
dollar purchase of MySQL last year, into calling for “open war” between
the MySQL community and Oracle.
Oracle has accused the European Commission, which is blocking its acquisition
of Sun because of MySQL, of twisting the results of its antitrust
investigation to suit its own MySQL bias by misrepresenting, cherry-picking
or ignoring what users said about the market and the competitive scene and so
Oracle brought a string of large accounts to its closed-door hearing before
the regulator on Thursday and Friday to support its contention that the
“great majority of customers” do not oppose the deal.
According to the W... (more)

Yesterday morning I checked the Ulitzer home page on my iPhone on my way to
the office and I realized two of the top three stories were about "Typhoon
Ondoy" in Philippines.
Thirty-six hours later we still have three stories filed from Manila on
Ulitzer's home page. Top Ulitzer stories on Ulitzer from around the 25
distinct subject categories it covers are processed every 60 minutes and
displayed by an algorithm which we believe is more sophisticated than, say,
Google News algorithms.
Early this year, seasoned news man Roger Strukhoff, whose family owned and
published their town newspaper in Wisconsin, launched the Ulitzer topic
Philippines Online Journal. Strukhoff logged close to three million Ulitzer
page views with his articles.

Eucalyptus Session at Cloud Expo
Mårten Mickos, the guy who sold MySQL to Sun for a billion dollars, has got
himself another company. Now all he has to do is find another sucker like
Sun.
Mårten, who wouldn't be Mårten without that cute little Finnish doohickey
over his name, has been named CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, the open source
private cloud start-up. Woody Rollins, who was CEO, has morphed into the
company's CFO.
Since leaving Sun and MySQL last year, Mårten has been at Benchmark Capital,
which backed MySQL, as entrepreneur-in-residence trying to spot his next
opportunity. As it happens Eucalyptus is a Benchmark investment. Benchmark
led its $5.5 million first round.
Mårten says that while he was at Benchmark he asked around and people
identified only two real hot buttons: the cloud and the mobile Internet. Both
of them are gonna be massively big, but he fe... (more)

Consumer Watchdog filed a Freedom of Information Act request today with the
White House Office of Science and Technology Policy seeking copies of email
between Internet Policy chief Andrew McLaughlin and his former employer,
Google Inc.
The nonpartisan, nonprofit consumer group made the request after an online
publication printed an article showing that McLaughlin's "Buzz" profile
revealed that many of his most frequent email correspondents were Google
employees. Before being appointed the OSTP's Deputy Chief Technology Officer
for Internet Policy, McLaughlin was Google's head of Global Public Policy,
its top global lobbyist.
Consumer Watchdog opposed McLaughlin's appointment by President Obama saying
that it violated the intent of the Administration's ethics rules meant to end
the revolving door between lobbyists and the executive branch.
