What’s the Point of Big Data Without the Insight?
By Yann Guernion
The Big Bang Theory is the pre-eminent explanation for the origins of the universe. It proposes, from an explosion of atoms, the universe rapidly expanded and in doing so created everything we know. But it did so in an erratic, haphazard and unstructured way. For every life form, an infinite amount of inhospitable desolate galaxies, planets and black holes were also created.
Big Data is often associated with the birth of what is known as the Third Generation of IT and many are now at a crossroads: Do they continue down the current path, hoping to stumble upon a planet Earth as they navigate a sprawling universe of information and data that continually expands in a totally unstructured fashion? Or do they apply longer term strategy, investing now to refine their technology and capitalize on the explosion of information available.
Big Data is the Beginning but Where Does the Journey Lead?
Presumably you're using Big Data to enable and enhance your digital transformation - it is not being implemented by most companies to consume time and hinder agility. Yet, too often this is exactly what happens!
Using open source tools like Hadoop might save money on software in the short term, but without automation the cost of time and resources to handle the data itself will increase exponentially. The potential gains of big data can only come by giving data scientists and developers more scope and freedom to develop innovative applications that enhance and personalize digital applications.
Power Is Nothing Without Control
When something powerful emerges, controlling and harnessing it requires either great ingenuity or great strength. Throughout history, from the wheel to the internet, humans always adapt, evolve and develop new tools to overcome the challenges they have faced. And the technical world is no different, with Big Data revolutionizing the way we work and understand human behavior. Hadoop is perceived as an especially powerful agile technology that can help both data scientists and IT departments integrate Big Data applications and processes into your IT ecosystem. While this could transform your company, attempting to control it can be nightmarish, devouring resources, time and money.
Hadoop includes its own scheduler, Oozie, while other open source tools such as Azkaban also exist. These tools do a great job at starting you on your Hadoop automation journey, with useful batch and monitoring functionalities. However, their inadequacies also do a great job of revealing the magnitude of enterprise-level automation you need drive your Big Data processing and deployments.
Exploit Hadoop to Drive Digital Innovation
In five years, enterprises will be dealing with even larger volumes of structured and unstructured data, using it to make smarter decisions. Access to the right information at the right time will more than ever be essential to make informed business decisions, get ahead of the competition and drive innovation.
To deal with the next wave of Big Data, organizations will need to incorporate analytics into the agile model whereby building, testing, provisioning and deploying are all run as automated processes:
- Integrating Big Data workflows within enterprise-wide automated processes
- Ensuring a centralized provisioning and orchestration point for all Spark, MapReduce, HDFS, Pig and Hive tasks, both in the cloud and hybrid environments
- Enabling Data Scientists to efficiently interact with Big Data platforms without the additional stress of learning a multitude of new tools
The Potential of Big Data
Although Big Data has been around for some time, it has fantastic exponentially increasing potential that most businesses are yet to tap into. Combined with automation capabilities, Big Data provides almost limitless opportunity to produce the next game-changing application that people haven't yet realized they need.
However, end-to-end management of your business processes can become tricky in a Big Data context because it relies so heavily on interaction with the rest of the IT landscape. Workload automation enables interacting with these problems natively, making it possible to build enterprise-level workflows that include Hadoop the same way as any other IT service, thus incorporating Big Data into the processes supporting your digital business initiatives.
What's the most inventive use of Big Data you have see recently? We would love to know!

The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.
@DevOpsSummit will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Time spent on infrastructure development is significantly increased, and DevOps practitioners report more software releases and higher quality. Sponsors of @DevOpsSummit will benefit from unmatched branding, profile building and lead generation opportunities through:
- Featured on-site presentation and ongoing on-demand webcast exposure to a captive audience of industry decision-makers.
- Showcase exhibition during our new extended dedicated expo hours
- Breakout Session Priority scheduling for Sponsors that have been guaranteed a 35-minute technical session
- Online advertising in SYS-CON's i-Technology Publications
- Capitalize on our Comprehensive Marketing efforts leading up to the show with print mailings, e-newsletters and extensive online media coverage.
