Scrum at 21 with @KSchwaber | @DevOpsSummit #Agile #AI #Scrum #DevOps

I'm told that it has been 21 years since Scrum became public when Jeff Sutherland and I presented it at an Object-Oriented Programming, Systems, Languages & Applications (OOPSLA) workshop in Austin, TX, in October of 1995. Time sure does fly. Things mature. I'm still in the same building and at the same company where I first formulated Scrum.[1] Initially nobody knew of Scrum, yet it is now an open source body of knowledge translated into more than 30 languages.[2] People use Scrum worldwide for developing software and other uses I never anticipated.[3] Scrum was born and initially used by Jeff and me to meet market demand at our respective companies. After we made Scrum public in 1996 and writing my paper SCRUM Development Process, we started trying Scrum publicly, in companies with critical needs that were willing to try anything. The first organization where we e... (more)

Cloud Operating Model | @CloudExpo @JPMorgenthal #IoT #PaaS #AWS #Azure #OpenShift

Hard Choices Are Required When Adopting a Cloud Operating Model When was the last time you’ve ever heard anyone say “IT Applications & Operations”? Frankly, in my 30+ year career in IT, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard anyone use this term. The typical term we hear is IT Infrastructure & Operations. These two go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly, which tells us a lot about how we view the field of IT. For those that may not be familiar with the role of IT Operations, Joe Hertvik does a great job here of describing IT Operations Management as someone engaged in the role of providing this service to the business. As you can see it’s very interesting how he specifically addresses the gap between responsibilities regarding IT Applications and IT Operations as a Venn diagram in which there is no overlap. However, as we progress from a pre-Cloud Operating Model world t... (more)

The Art of Software Delivery

Often, estimates are initially made with an incomplete understanding of requirements. Estimation is done at the beginning of the lifecycle before the requirements are defined and thus the problem understood. How can you accurately estimate unless you know what the problem we intend to solve? At this point, they often represent wishes rather than realistic estimates. As the project progresses and the problem become better understood, estimates should be revisited. For example, NASA advocates re- estimation at defined points in the lifecycle. Often, a Project Manager will know that they should revise their estimates as they get a better understanding of the requirements, but are afraid to; they feel they will be viewed as a failure. A Project manager needs to be honest to themselves, their team and stakeholders. It is important that the Project Manager is not coaxed in... (more)

DevOps Summit Accepting Keynote Proposals | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

DevOps Summit 2015 New York, co-located with the 16th International Cloud Expo - to be held June 9-11, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY - announces that it is now accepting Keynote Proposals. The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch. DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential. The DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo will expand the DevOps community, enable a wide sharing of knowledge, and educate delegates and technology providers alike. Recent research has shown that DevOps dramatically reduces development time, the amount of enterprise IT professionals put out fires, and support time generally. Tim... (more)

Clustering Porticor-Protected Storage

Once you have created a secured disk on Porticor, it is almost trivial to build a highly-available RAID solution on top of it. We will demonstrate a RAID level 1 (mirrored) solution, but it can easily be extended to more sophisticated RAID levels. Create a disk, and expose it as an iSCSI target. Go to the Virtual Appliances page, and create a second appliance in the same project. Navigate to the second appliance, and create another iSCSI disk of the same size. Mount both of these disks on your application server. Look up the Use It link for the particular disk for details on mounting it. Do not format the disks, only go as far as discovery and iSCSI login (the first two commands). sudo iscsiadm --mode node ... -o new sudo iscsiadm --mode node ... --login Check out the main mount points (e.g. /dev/sdc) that were created for the disks: ls -l /dev/disk/by-path Now ru... REST & AJAX - Web Servers, Web Browsers, and the HTTP Protocol

One of the hottest buzzwords you hear these days at conferences and read in blogs and forums is REST. It is often promoted as a way of building Web Services and as a lightweight alternative to SOAP and other Web Services frameworks, but in fact it's much more. REST is an architectural style that has a collection of best practices with solid scientific backing that describes how to build scalable Web applications that meet the requirements of their technical environment, namely the Web with its Web servers, Web browsers, and the HTTP protocol. This article will start with a short introduction to the basic principles and concepts of REST from the point-of-view of a client-side Web developer. In the second part, I'll show how to use REST-style Web architectures with AJAX-based clients and how to circumvent some common pitfalls. REST stands for Representational State Tra... (more)

IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...
