The Art of Software Delivery

Often, estimates are initially made with an incomplete understanding of requirements. Estimation is done at the beginning of the lifecycle before the requirements are defined and thus the problem understood. How can you accurately estimate unless you know what the problem we intend to solve? At this point, they often represent wishes rather than realistic estimates. As the project progresses and the problem become better understood, estimates should be revisited. For example, NASA advocates re- estimation at defined points in the lifecycle. Often, a Project Manager will know that they should revise their estimates as they get a better understanding of the requirements, but are afraid to; they feel they will be viewed as a failure. Clustering Porticor-Protected Storage

Once you have created a secured disk on Porticor, it is almost trivial to build a highly-available RAID solution on top of it. We will demonstrate a RAID level 1 (mirrored) solution, but it can easily be extended to more sophisticated RAID levels. Create a disk, and expose it as an iSCSI target. Go to the Virtual Appliances page, and create a second appliance in the same project. Navigate to the second appliance, and create another iSCSI disk of the same size. Mount both of these disks on your application server. Look up the Use It link for the particular disk for details on mounting it. One of the hottest buzzwords you hear these days at conferences and read in blogs and forums is REST. It is often promoted as a way of building Web Services and as a lightweight alternative to SOAP and other Web Services frameworks, but in fact it's much more. REST is an architectural style that has a collection of best practices with solid scientific backing that describes how to build scalable Web applications that meet the requirements of their technical environment, namely the Web with its Web servers, Web browsers, and the HTTP protocol. This article will start with a short introduction to the basic principles and concepts of REST from the point-of-view of a client-side Web developer.
