2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several
decades.
With major technology companies and startups seriously embracing IoT
strategies, now is the perfect time to attend @ThingsExpo in Silicon Valley.

Systems of Innovation for Ongoing Digital Transformation
Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in
business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo.
It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new
opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before.
So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition?
Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study
that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the
globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider
the digital business transformation outlook in 2017.
Introduction to the Torchbearer CIO
CIOs realize the barriers between formerly distinct industries are
collapsing, as organizations in one sector apply their expertise to others ... (more)
Extend User Experience of WebRTC with Unique Sensor Devices
WebRTC is great technology to build your own communication tools. It will be

Corporation, will introduce two experimental projects from his team and what
they learned from them.
"Shotoku Tamago" uses the robot audition software HARK to track speakers in

When you visit Newsweek.com, the words you read started their journey
milliseconds earlier from an Amazon.com datacenter somewhere in northern
Virginia. And if you visited Wikileaks.org earlier this week, the bytes
comprising leaked U.S. embassy cables would have traveled a similar path from
Amazon servers based in northern California or Ireland.
While WikiLeaks and Newsweek are very different organizations, we both relied
on the 21st century equivalent of the printing press – cloud computing –
to distribute our information. Amazon shut off WikiLeaks servers Wednesday,
citing the company’s violation of Amazon rules, coincidentally at the same
time government officials called for similar action... (more)
On the day when the Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 12,000 for the first
time since June 2008, it was impossible not to correlate the eloquence and
optimism of President Obama's "State of the Union" speech on Tuesday night
with the restoration of a sense of perspective and hope in the USA about the
future.
Obama grasped the nettle full-on. "We are poised for progress," he declared,
adding:
"Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock
market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is
growing."
As one blogger expressed it, though - and he is a former Goldman Sachs trader
called Tyler Durden, so he ought to know wheref he speaks:
"There was a massive pink elephant in the room called reality though."
Durden's gripe is with what he deems to be the unreality of Obama's praising
Google and Facebook so highly in an Ameri... (more)

Think cloud computing is just the latest IT fad? Think again.
Forrester predicts the global cloud computing market will grow from $35
billion in 2011 to around $150 billion by 2020 as it becomes key to many
organizations' IT infrastructures.
According to an article on ZDNet, by 2020 cloud is going to be a major - and
permanent - part of the enterprise computing infrastructure.
By 2020, a generational shift will have occurred in organizations. A new
generation of CIOs will be in charge that have grown up using cloud-based
tools, making them far more willing to adopt cloud on an enterprise scale.
With these developments in mind, here are 10 ways in which the cloud of 2020
will look radically different to the way it does today, according to ZDNet.

Yesterday Microsoft launched its Azure cloud platform, so it is time for
another spreadsheet. To properly compare Microsoft, Google and Amazon, I am
using the gross profit (instead of revenue) and net profit numbers. Gross
profit is, in some sense, the real revenue of a company after paying its
outside suppliers; gross profit is what is available to pay its employees,
pay the rent, and so on. For a software company, the cost of goods sold is
close to zero, so most of the revenue is gross profit. But for a retailer, as
much as 70-80% of revenue goes to its suppliers, so gross profit is the
better measure of the economic productivity the company achieves. The numbers
in the table use rough annualized estimates based on the most recent quarter.
Do you notice the dramatic difference? Google and Microsoft are in another
planet altogether compared to ... (more)
Speaking Thursday in Tokyo at The New Context Conference 2010, the founder of
Twitter, Biz Stone (pictured), put onto the record two sentences that will
stand the test of time in the era of social computing:
"Twitter isn't a triumph of technology it's a triumph of humanity. A more
connected world leads to a more empathic world."
Interestingly, Stone makes this observation in the self-same week that saw
the sale of TechCrunch, Inc. to New York-based AOL - triggering a spate of
commentaries along the lines of This Is the Death of Independent Blogging.
Is this an inflexion point? Hell, yes. And a big one. This week is also the
week in which, as Guy Kawasaki reminds us, that Twitter's traffic overtook
that of MySpace.
So what is going on? Why is independent blogging being characterized as dying
at the very moment that tweeting is becoming as natural a part of the
interconn... (more)
