Five of the Best Programming Languages and Frameworks for a Small Business Choosing a programming framework for a small business can be overwhelming- there are so many. Here are a few of the best choices, to help you get started. Ask a room of ten developers which programming framework is the ‘best on the market,' and you're liable to receive ten different answers. Each developer will sing the praises of a different language, and each one will very probably feel that theirs is the only logical choice. The most confusing thing, though? Each and every one of those developers will be correct. Wait, what? I'll be blunt: there is no universal programming framework. The language your organization should work with - whether it's for web development, mobile development, or traditional development - depends entirely on your unique situation. The perfect choice for one busine... (more)

Monitoring Containers | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Docker #APM #Monitoring

The Importance of Monitoring Containers By Kevin Goldberg With the rise of Docker, Kubernetes, and other container technologies, the growth of microservices has skyrocketed among dev teams looking to innovate on a faster release cycle. This has enabled teams to finally realize their DevOps goals to ship and iterate quickly in a continuous delivery model. Why containers are growing in popularity is no surprise — they’re extremely easy to spin up or down, but come with an unforeseen issue. However, without the right foresight, DevOps and IT teams may lose a lot of visibility into these containers resulting in operational blind spots and even more haystacks to find the presumptive performance issue needle. If your team is looking towards containers and microservices as an operational change in how you decide to ship your product, you can’t afford bugs or software issue... (more)

Java vs. Python: Which One Is Best for You? | @DevOpsSummit #APM #Java #Python

Java vs. Python: Which One Is Best for You? By Kevlin Henney Few questions in software development are more divisive or tribal than choice of programming language. Software developers often identify strongly with their tools of choice, freely mixing objective facts with subjective preference. The last decade, however, has seen an explosion both in the number of languages used in production and the number of languages an individual developer is likely to employ day to day. That means that language affiliations are sometimes spread more loosely and broadly across different codebases, frameworks, and platforms. Modern projects and modern developers are increasingly polyglot—able to draw on more languages and libraries than ever before. Informed choice still has a part to play. From that bustling bazaar of programming languages, let’s narrow our focus to two survivor... (more)

The Dangers of Cloud Storage | @CloudExpo #BigData #SDN #DataCenter

Today nearly all of us have our information stored on the cloud. It's a very easy solution that allows users to seamlessly create back-ups of photos, contacts and other personal information, giving users access to their accounts anywhere from any device. Perhaps its most prized feature is that it has no storage limits, unlike mobile devices and PCs. There is, however, a downside to cloud services. Although it is useful in storing data, it could be the reason data is lost. Recently, the celebrity iCloud hack went to trial. The hacker admitted he acquired the credentials by spear phishing his victims and once he had them, all the data they stored on the cloud, whether intentionally or not, was exposed and later posted online. Many users are not aware of the different risks involved in using the cloud. It's easy to forget that it syncs automatically, storing data that wa... (more)

Python: Beyond Just Web Apps | @DevOpsSummit #APM #DevOps

Python: Beyond Just Web Apps By Omed Habib Python has long been a go-to language for developers creating cutting-edge web applications. However, Python’s advantages of power, versatility, flexibility and ease of programming have made it a favorite language in a multitude of applications, industries, and niches. Examples of Python being used outside the world of Web apps include: The development of an ERP/CRM named ERP5, developed by Nexedi for use in government agencies, the apparel industry, and other warehouse-based businesses. A self-contained marine navigation light from Carmanah Technologies. This is a good example of how Python is helping to power the move away from dedicated computers to the new era of the Internet of Things. Substantial portions of the semiconductor facility at the Phillips manufacturing plant in Fishkill, New York are run on Python. Python... (more)

You know you need the cloud, but you’re hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You’re looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you’re concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.
Five years ago development was seen as a dead-end career, now it’s anything but – with an explosion in mobile and IoT initiatives increasing the demand for skilled engineers. As DevOps methodologies expand their reach across the enterprise, organizations face the daunting challenge of adapting related cloud strategies to ensure optimal alignment, from managing complexity to ensuring proper governance. How can culture, automation, legacy apps and even budget be reexamined to enable this ongoing shift within the modern software factory?
The “Digital Era” is forcing us to engage with new methods to build, operate and maintain applications. This transformation also implies an evolution to more and more intelligent applications to better engage with the customers, while creating significant market differentiators. In both cases, the cloud has become a key enabler to embrace this digital revolution. So, moving to the cloud is no longer the question; the new questions are HOW and WHEN. To make this equation even more complex, most...
