Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, you are probably aware that in May 2011 Google open-sourced the key audio/video components for web browsers, paving the way for the development of rich, high quality, RTC applications in the browser via simple Javascript APIs and HTML5. This in turn gave rise to the WebRTC project, a cross-industry project to bring Real-Time Communication to the Open Web platform.

WebRTC - Web-based Real-Time Communication - is being heralded as one of most disruptive web/telecoms innovations for years, which is why SYS-CON Events, true to its 13-year tradition of producing events on the technologies of tomorrow, is holding its 1st WebRTC Summit in California's Silicon Valley in November.

The distinguished lineup of expert speakers at the inaugural WebRTC Summit will look at questions such as:

  • WebRTC for telcos - is there a real business opportunity?
  • Is Skype a WebRTC Killer, or is WebRTC a Skype killer?
  • Peer-to-peer use of WebRTC
  • RTCPeerConnection
  • Integrating WebRTC with Web Audio
  • The Voice-Enabled Web
  • P2P communication in the browser
  • The monetization of WebRTC

Google’s Justin Uberti claims that developers will soon be able to reach more than 1 billion browsers and devices with the WebRTC protocol. Uberti is Google's Tech Lead for WebRTC. He also mentions that by end of 2016 there will be a staggering 3 billion WebRTC-capable devices.

A Practical Guide to Building WebRTC Apps
[Nov 7th - 4:50-5:35]
Transforming the promise of WebRTC into a reliable solution takes more than writing a few lines of JavaScript. In his session at the WebRTC Fundamentals Summit, Ben Strong, CEO & Co-founder, vLine, will dive into a range of considerations you'll need to address. What does the browser provide - and not provide? (Spoiler alert: things left to the web developer to figure out include signaling between peers, session management, UI controls, TURN, STUN, and more.) We'll also cover the design choices required as well as common client- and server-side components you'll need to build. And no practical guide to WebRTC apps would be complete without addressing the hottest topic in WebRTC: mobile.

Robust Carrier Grade WebRTC Service
[Nov 6th - 4:45 - 5:30 pm]
Consumers have higher expectations of their telephony experience than they do of a web browsing experience. They expect the phone to connect instantly with minimal disruptions. The phone is already secure and phone numbers are used to make connections. Subscribers expect their phone service to work seamless across any network, anywhere, at any time. Subscribers will expect WebRTC into the enterprise to behave in the same manner. In his session at WebRTC Summit, Douglas Tait, Global Director of Marketing for Telecommunications at Oracle, will look at the user experience and expectations of a WebRTC service and cover how a WebRTC service handles security, reliability, and interoperability within browsers and networks.

Interoperable WebRTC and Why It Is Important
[Nov 6 - 8:15-9:00 am via WebRTC]
There are many potential applications for WebRTC and for many interoperability is not a requirement. However, this does not mean that there is not a need for interoperability, particularly at the signaling level, for other applications. Many people have dismissed interoperability as a consideration when using WebRTC - often due to the fact that their favored use cases do not require it (and in some cases are even hampered by it). In his session at WebRTC Summit, Peter Dunkley, Technical Director at Crocodile RCS, will look at the other side and discuss the case for interoperability and explain how WebRTC can be used to enhance and extend existing services in a way provides benefits to service providers and their customers. He will conclude with a look at some of the open-source options available today for building interoperable WebRTC applications.

Telephony APIs Boosted the Telehealth Rocket. Is WebRTC the Second Stage Engine?
[Nov 7 - 11:45 - 12:30 pm]
Telehealth legislation opened the floodgates for investment in modern communications services and APIs since 2010. WebRTC promises a second revolution. In his session at WebRTC Summit, Ivelin Ivanov, co-founder of TeleStax, will first discuss a real-world example where telephony APIs make a difference in improving patient care and reducing healthcare costs. He will then look into a brighter telehealth future with secure, high quality, ubiquitous WebRTC video interactions.

WebRTC and the Codec War
[Nov 6 - 9:55-10:25 am]
The codec war is raging now more than ever before. The increased popularity of the proposed WebRTC protocol and the implied royalty costs make this a hot topic. Google, Cisco, Microsoft and now finally Apple are promoting their preferred technology and attempting to influence the choice to be made for WebRTC. The choice is far from clear especially in light of the latest technology advances, the transcoding infrastructure costs involved and the impact on mobile devices. In this session, Soufiane Houri, VP of Product at Weemo, will share Weemo's multi-year experience developing on top of the leading video and voice codecs. He will provide some perspective on the advantages of each across devices taking into account hardware and software-based video acceleration and the impact each have on the end user.

When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...

IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...
