IoT and the Implications for Security Inside and Outside the Enterprise
In the enterprise today, connected IoT devices are everywhere - both inside
and outside corporate environments. The need to identify, manage, control and
secure a quickly growing web of connections and outside devices is making the
already challenging task of security even more important, and onerous.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Rich Boyer, CISO and Chief Architect for

Did you know that the reservations systems of the biggest carriers mostly run
on a specialized IBM operating system known as Transaction Processing
Facility (TPF). Designed by IBM in the 1960s it was designed to process a
large numbers of transactions quickly. Although IBM is still updating the
code, the last major rewrite was about ten years ago. With all the major
technologies changes since then, it's clear that IBM has already accomplished
a herculean task by keeping an application viable for over 50 years.
Just like Americas aging physical infrastructure, the airlines are suffering
from years of minimal investment in their information technology. This
critical failure has been highlighted by a number of newsworthy incidents
including:

Are You Prepared for Disaster (Recovery)?
By Tony Beeston
There's no escaping how essential IT has become to modern business; gone are
the days where corporate life can continue without its IT systems. These
days, across all industry sectors, critical business processes rely upon IT,
and yet we're still being met by what feels like an age-old conundrum: what
awaits us in the face of a disaster?
Just to be clear, when I say ‘disaster', I'm not talking about a situation
that can be solved by the likes of high availability. In this case, disaster
means a ‘marginally-short-of-an-apocalypse' scale incident. Simply
load-balancing servers isn't going to solve this situation. Before you get
too comfortable and tell yourself, "that sort of thing will never happen to
me", I want to run some figures past you quickly, which have been compiled by
IDG Group:
42% of surveyed comp... (more)

Medical Device Safety in a Connected World
Consumers increasingly expect their electronic "things" to be connected to
smart phones, tablets and the Internet. When that thing happens to be a
medical device, the risks and benefits of connectivity must be carefully
weighed. Once the decision is made that connecting the device is beneficial,
medical device manufacturers must design their products to maintain patient
safety and prevent compromised personal health information in the face of
cybersecurity threats.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Clark Fortney, Software Engineer at Battelle,
discussed how designing safe connected medical devices begins with
systematically analyzing cyber threats against desired functionality and

Is Your Company Ready for the General Data Protection Regulation?
Remember the Y2K bug, the computer coding flaw that was predicted to cause
global havoc when the two-digit dates embedded in software rolled over from
1999 to 2000? After organizations around the world spent a year checking and
upgrading their systems to deal with the issue, few major problems ended up
occurring.
The world is now on the brink of what could be called the Y2K bug of data
privacy - the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),
tough rules that require companies to be more transparent about the
information they collect on individuals and how it is used.
GDPR's impact reaches beyond Europe because it covers any company with data
about European Union citizens on its servers. Are you a U.S. bank with a
subsidiary in Europe or a retailer with online customers on the continent... (more)
Patents are a good step towards shielding your IP data, but they're not a
seamless solution. Legal protection regarding intellectual property isn't
definite and has some holes in it. The constant stream of big data has made
this problem even worse, obscuring the specifics about original ownership.
Data comes in streams from all over the world. Companies have more
information about consumers and their closest competitors than ever before.
It's an incredible marketing advantage when utilized correctly, and
businesses are happy to have it in their arsenal.
However, there's a dark side of big data that challenges an organization's
brand and even it's reputation. It gives businesses a potential insider
perspective on trade secrets, and the lines between intellectual rights
become blurred. Suddenly, the hard work you put into creating new ideas and
products can be seen by... (more)
Who is accountable for SSH-related, key-based access in your organization? In
many enterprises, this is not clear, leading to assumptions that leave you
vulnerable to attack and compliance violations as well. This article will
address the challenge of SSH user key-based access from the perspective of
compliance.
It's all about access control. All the regulations, laws and frameworks exist
to ensure, at a minimum, that protected data (PII, ePHI, credit card data,
etc.) has authorized access. It doesn't matter whether that access is being
requested by a machine, admin or business user. The fact is that:
Oversight and control are sorely lacking in many organizations. They do not
have visibility into SSH user key-based trusts or monitoring capabilities.
They lack processes for provisioning ownership, revocation and rotation of
keys. There is no ownership of the access b... (more)
