Graduate Student Appreciation Week 2017

Graduate Student Appreciation Week celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of more than 11,000 graduate students on the Urbana campus. That’s roughly one quarter of the entire student population spread out over 100 graduate programs. Our graduate students come from all 50 states and more than 102 countries around the world. They are smart, passionate, hardworking, and dedicated. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be in grad school! #ILLINOISgradlife

 

MONDAY, April 3

In Honor of Illinois Underrepresented Minority Graduate Students: A Celebration of Excellence in Graduate Education

By invitation only: 9:00-10:30 a.m., I Hotel Chancellor Ballroom  

The Graduate College host this reception to recognize department nominated graduate students for achievements of note and all volunteers who have participated in Educational Equity Program events over the past year.

Steps to Investing

Stocks, bonds, and IRAs – oh my!  Where should a young investor start? University of Illinois Extension is hosting “Steps towards Investing” during Grad Student Appreciation Week to help you explore investment options and strategies. Learn about important investment concepts such as diversification, purchasing power risk, and market risk. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to have your money grow; learn how to invest while you’re still young!

Proposal Writing Workshop - STEM Fields

The Graduate College Office of External Fellowships is offering a grant writing workshop for graduate students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, & math). Dr. Karen Ruhleder, Assistant Director of External Fellowships, will cover how and where to search for funding and will present a nuts and bolts introduction of the art of proposal writing.

Gradmap: making Plans in Grad School

3:30 - 5 p.m., Coble Hall, room 304

What do you want to achieve in graduate school? The skills and experiences you gain in the coming years will impact your success in graduate school and beyond. In GradMAP, you will develop a personalized development plan so you can get the most out of your time in graduate school and make use of campus resources for graduate students. In this hands-on program, you will identify goals and make a plan to achieve them, with a focus on developing skills in areas like leadership, research, teaching, and professionalism. GradMAP is open to graduate students at any level, but it is especially useful for students in the first several years of their programs. Sponsored by the Graduate College.

TED Talks Screening and Discussion with Interdisciplinary Graduate Society

What do art and science have in common? How can commonalities between different disciplines advance the greater mission of academia? Join the Interdisciplinary Graduate Society for a screening and discussion of past TED talks that are surprisingly relevant in today's academic and political climate. 

 

WEDNESDAY, April 5

Job Market Successes Panel

Noon - 1:30 p.m., Illini Union, room 210

What does it take to make it through a faculty job search cycle? How can you best prepare for survival--and even success? Come to this panel to hear from current graduate students and postdocs who have just landed faculty jobs. They will have stories, advice, and can answer questions you have as you get ready to apply.

THESIS REVIEW & DEPOSIT

2 - 3 p.m., Coble Hall, room 304/308

Do you have questions about depositing your thesis or dissertation? The Thesis Office and the University Library are here to help! This presentation will take you step-by-step through the thesis submission process, discuss the deposit requirements, and go over the things to consider before your document is published in IDEALS, the university’s document repository. 

Writing effective fellowship proposals in the social Sciences & humanities

The Image of Research and Graduate Student Leadership Award Reception

4 - 6 p.m., Illini Union, Room 104

Vote for the People's Choice Award at The Image of Research exhibit of semi-finalists. Award winners for the Image of Research and the Graduate Student Leadership Award will be announced.

 

THURSDAY, April 6

Krannert Uncorked

5 - 7 p.m., Krannert Center for the Performing Arts

Join SAGE members for an evening of live music and socializing with graduate students from across campus. Music will be provided by MUGS (Music Grad Students) and will include a harpist, string quartet, percussion trio, woodwind sextet, and a steel drum ensemble.

Relaxation of the Mind and Body for Grad Students

Registration required.
6-7 p.m., ACES Library Heritage Room

Long days of graduate school mixed with little energy and lots of work is a stressful combination for anyone to handle. Learn to simplify your stress during this interactive workshop including time management tips and relaxation exercises to help reduce the tension in graduate school. This workshop will leave you feeling ready to take on the next day of higher education. Co-sponsored by McKinley Health Center and the Graduate College.

 

SATURDAY, April 8

SCHOOL OF ART + DESIGN EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION

5 - 7 p.m., Krannert Art Museum Main Level, East Gallery, Free

This annual exhibition represents the culmination of intense artistic development for graduate students in studio art and design. Marking a meaningful step further into the art world, the exhibition highlights and celebrates the artists’ exceptional creativity and inventiveness. Sponsored in part by John and Alice Pfeffer and Krannert Art Museum. The exhibit runs from April 7 through 22. See details on the Krannert Art Museum website.
