Colocation is a central pillar of modern enterprise infrastructure planning because it provides greater control, insight, and performance than managed platforms.
In spite of the inexorable rise of the cloud, most businesses with extensive IT hardware requirements choose to host their infrastructure in colocation data centers. According to a recent IDC survey, more than half of the businesses questioned use colocation services, and the number is even higher among established businesses and businesses with an existing base of IT expertise.
Businesses in this category don't want or need restrictive fully managed infrastructure platforms. They need the freedom to build platforms tailored to their particular requirements, infrastructure that represents the best investment of constrained IT budgets, and infrastructure which they can control for security, availability, and performance.
World-Class Data Centers
Building and managing data centers is expensive. Building and managing data centers that are competitive with the best in the world is even more so. Unless a company has truly massive infrastructure requirements, it doesn't make sense to tie up capital in a data center that, even with a large investment, is unlikely to approach the capabilities of the best colocation data centers.
Even companies that prefer to have complete control over their infrastructure see the wisdom of outsourcing data center construction and management to a third party. They benefit from redundant bandwidth and power from multiple providers, cutting-edge physical and digital security, and plenty of space to scale, without having to cede control of their hardware.
Risk Management
Many established companies already have a data center to support core operations, but disaster recovery and business continuity best practices mandate geographic diversity.
Businesses that depend on a single location for infrastructure hosting are in a perilous position. Security breaches, infrastructure failures, human error, unanticipated traffic spikes, and natural disasters can degrade availability or take a data center offline. Colocation data centers provide a perfect venue for redundant fail-over infrastructure.
Performance
Generally speaking, bare metal servers perform better than cloud platforms at equivalent price points. The ability of cloud platforms to scale more quickly occasionally outweighs the performance benefits of bare metal, but typical enterprise workloads rely on fast IO or processing, not massive on-demand scalability.
An organization with infrastructure management expertise will benefit economically and technologically if it chooses colocated bare metal rather than the cloud, which is why so many enterprise organizations opt for dedicated servers for database hosting, data analytics, data storage, and any computing that requires serious number crunching.
Your Infrastructure, Your Rules
Colocation gives businesses free rein to choose the hardware and software that is most suitable for their projects. Managed server and cloud platforms are much more restrictive and designed for the general use-case, rather than the particular needs of each application or service.
The control afforded to colocation clients goes beyond choosing hardware and software. Because only colocation clients have access to their hardware, every part of its operation remains under their control.
Outside of the services offered by the data center - rack space, bandwidth, power - everything is the responsibility of the client. Security, regulatory compliance, availability, reliability, performance: the buck stops with the client, and for companies with the expertise to manage their hardware, that's a very good thing. They're not beholden to a cloud provider or a managed service provider.
I'm reminded of the recent massive outage on AWS. AWS users were frustrated by the downtime, which was caused by human error, but my Twitter feed was also full of expert system administrators and developers lamenting the fact that they were forced to sit and twiddle their thumbs until the service came back online - there was nothing they could do.
Organizations need insight into and control over their hardware and software; colocation is all about control.

Financial Technology - or FinTech - Is Now Part of the @CloudExpo Program!
Accordingly, attendees at the upcoming 21st Cloud Expo | @ThingsExpo October 31 - November 2, 2017, Santa Clara Convention Center, CA, and June 12-14, 2018, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY, will find fresh new content in a new track called FinTech, which will incorporate machine learning, artificial intelligence, deep learning, and blockchain into one track.
Financial enterprises in New York City, London, Singapore, and other world financial capitals are embracing a new generation of smart, automated FinTech that eliminates many cumbersome, slow, and expensive intermediate processes from their businesses.
FinTech brings efficiency as well as the ability to deliver new services and a much improved customer experience throughout the global financial services industry. FinTech is a natural fit with cloud computing, as new services are quickly developed, deployed, and scaled on public, private, and hybrid clouds.
More than US$20 billion in venture capital is being invested in FinTech this year. @CloudExpo is pleased to bring you the latest FinTech developments as an integral part of our program, starting at the 21st International Cloud Expo October 31 - November 2, 2017 in Silicon Valley, and June 12-14, 2018, in New York City.
