[slides] #Hadoop in the #Cloud | @CloudExpo @Cloudera #BigData #DataCenter

Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Hadoop in the Cloud Traditional on-premises data centers have long been the domain of modern data platforms like Apache Hadoop, meaning companies who build their business on public cloud were challenged to run Big Data processing and analytics at scale. But recent advancements in Hadoop performance, security, and most importantly cloud-native integrations, are giving organizations the ability to truly gain value from all their data. Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, David Tishgart, Director of Product Marketing at Cloudera, covered the ins and outs of Hadoop, and how it can help cloud-based businesses. Attendees will learn: How to speed ETL pipelines and data transformations How to run low-latency ad-hoc analytics across regions against object store data How to perform high-va... (more)

The 'Big' Fallacy of Big Data | @BigDataExpo #BigData

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you've been hearing about the world of Big Data nonstop. Big Data promises fortune and power to those that can wield the somewhat mystical and often nebulous power of "Big Data". Unfortunately for the rest of us mere mortals Big Data is built on an out-right lie that is both pernicious and unfortunate. It's hiding right there in plain sight in the name itself. The word, BIG. The Fallacy of Big Data is that you have to have a lot of data for it to be relevant. The common catch phrase is: "More data = more insights". There is a nugget of truth to this in that, in some cases, a lot of data is needed in order to establish valid patterns and create real insight into the activity the data represents. More often than not however, this creates a significant challenge to those responsible for performing anal... (more)

‘The Pain Curve’ By @StackIQ | @CloudExpo #BigData #DevOps #Hadoop

Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Due of the rise of Hadoop, many enterprises are now deploying their first small clusters of 10 to 20 servers. At this small scale, the complexity of operating the cluster looks and feels like general data center servers. It is not until the clusters scale, as they inevitably do, when the pain caused by the exponential complexity becomes apparent. We've seen this problem occur time and time again. In his session at Big Data Expo, Greg Bruno, Vice President of Engineering and co-founder of StackIQ, described why clusters are so different from farms of single-purpose servers that reside in traditional data centers, and why without an automated solution that can address the cluster requirements, real pain is coming and failure is certain. Speaker Bio: Greg Bruno is the Vice President of Engineering and co-founder of StackIQ. Prior to jo... (more)

(more)

The Top 250 Players in the Cloud Computing Ecosystem

In the run-up to the next Cloud Expo, 7th Cloud Expo (November 1–4, 2010) being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Silicon Valley, it's time to give my earlier list a complete overhaul. Here, accordingly, is an expanded list of the most active players in the Cloud Ecosystem. I have increased it from the 'mere' 150 I identified back in January of this year, to 250, testimony – as if any were needed! – to the fierce and continuing growth of the "Elastic IT" paradigm throughout the world of enterprise computing. Editorial note: The words in quotation marks used to describe the various services and solutions in this round-up are in every case taken from the Web sites of the companies themselves. Omissions to this Top 250 list should be sent to me via Twitter (twitter.com/jg21) and I will endeavor to include them in any future revision of this newly expanded rou... (more)

Top Two Technology Priorities for CIOs in 2011: Cloud & Virtualization

"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the 2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP). "CIOs and IT have been boxed in between modest budget growth and growing legacy requirements," McDonald continued, noting that "Cloud services and virtualization are well-suited for this budget reality, as they offer similar service levels at lower budget costs." The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time. According to the results, CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster than originally expected. Cur... (more)

Cisco's Cloud CTO Keynotes at Cloud Expo | The Ever-Changing Cloud

Another perfect storm is brewing in cloud computing fueled by the explosive growth of Internet-based mobile apps, network virtualization, and APIs for programmatic control of infrastructure. In addition, community-driven open source projects such as OpenStack make it possible for anyone to deploy and directly contribute to what promises to be a widely deployed, open cloud platform. Many companies and individual developers are contributing ideas and code for new cloud services, which bring capabilities of the underlying infrastructure into the world of cloud applications. To better understand how this will change cloud computing, in his Day 4 Keynote today November 8 at the 11th International Cloud Expo, Cisco's Cloud CTO Lew Tucker will discuss the way to think about platforms, abstractions, and infrastructure as we enter this next phase of cloud computing. IoT solutions exploit operational data generated by Internet-connected smart “things” for the purpose of gaining operational insight and producing “better outcomes” (for example, create new business models, eliminate unscheduled maintenance, etc.). The explosive proliferation of IoT solutions will result in an exponential growth in the volume of IoT data, precipitating significant Information Governance issues: who owns the IoT data, what are the rights/duties of IoT solutions adopters towards t...

When growing capacity and power in the data center, the architectural trade-offs between server scale-up vs. scale-out continue to be debated. Both approaches are valid: scale-out adds multiple, smaller servers running in a distributed computing model, while scale-up adds fewer, more powerful servers that are capable of running larger workloads. It’s worth noting that there are additional, unique advantages that scale-up architectures offer. One big advantage is large memory and compute capacity...

When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
