Top Two Technology Priorities for CIOs in 2011: Cloud & Virtualization

"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the 2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP). "CIOs and IT have been boxed in between modest budget growth and growing legacy requirements," McDonald continued, noting that "Cloud services and virtualization are well-suited for this budget reality, as they offer similar service levels at lower budget costs." The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time. It's the Multi-touch SDK's Stupid!

I remember when Clinton (the Husband) was running for president against Bush (the Father) back in 1992. The slogan for the Clinton campaign was, "It's the Economy Stupid!". The point was that while Bush Sr. was doing well on foreign policy he was disconnected from the realities of the US population which was in the midst of a recession. True or not the slogan stuck and variations of it have been used ever since. While I'm very excited to see so many multi-touch and touch mobile devices (e.g. iPhone, Palm Pre, HTC Touch Pro) and multi-touch desktops (MacBook Pro, HP TouchSmart TX2, Dell Latitude XT2), tables (Microsoft Surface, Ideum MT2, SMART Table, GestureTek Illuminate, IntuiFace 2G, Perceptive Pixel, Multitouch Cell, iTable, Teliris, CUBIT), as well as operating systems (Windows 7, Mac Snow leapard) I'm a bit discouraged by the lack of SDKs available. HP’s Got a New Girlfriend Called LISA

iTKO says HP is going to resell its LISA Virtualize software combined with HP's quality management, functional and performance testing solutions. It's supposed to accelerate software testing and reduce the cost of developing increasingly complex modern applications. What LISA does is described as application behavior and performance virtualization. The widgetry creates on-demand 24/7 virtual test environments. It's supposed to lower test lab costs by up to 65% and shorten software release cycles by up to 38% by eliminating the testing constraints caused by dependent IT resources that are unavailable or inaccessible for testing. iTKO says that for software test labs and test teams to be productive, they need live working environments to test against and those dependencies can become a huge constraint when critical systems like mainframes and cloud services are either ... Neon Sues IBM for Antitrust

Texas ISV Neon Enterprise Software, accepting that it's in a fight to the death with IBM over mainframes, ripped the kid gloves off, amended its pre-Christmas suit against its giant nemesis for tortious interference, business disparagement and unfair competition and charged Blue with antitrust violations. It cited both the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Clayton Antitrust Act, charging IBM with monopoly maintenance and conditioning sales to mainframe users on their promise not to buy from a competitor. If proved, IBM may have to disgorge a billion dollars or more of its profits on software licensing fees on a Lanham Act charge and pay hundreds of millions of dollars more in damages.
