The World's Many IoTs: Which Are the Most Important?
The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas.
In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound effect on the world, and what should we expect to see over the next couple of years.
Panelist Bios:Chris Matthieu is the co-founder and CTO of Octoblu, a revolutionary real-time IoT platform recently acquired by Citrix. Octoblu connects things, systems, people and clouds to a global mesh network allowing users to automate and control design flows, processes and sensor data, and analyze/react to real-time events and messages as well as big data trends and anomalies. Prior to co-founding Octoblu, Chris was the founder of Nodester, an open-source Node.JS PaaS which was acquired by AppFog and the founder of Teleku, a communications-as-a-service cloud platform which was acquired by Voxeo. Ermanno Bonifazi is a visionary entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in creating value for shareholders and growing his organizations. As the Founder and CEO of Solgenia, he brings forward new technologies through innovative and key enterprise solutions that address key business needs through the Cloud. He currently leads Solgenia globally through 350 employees worldwide and a strategy to be one of the leading Enterprise Cloud solution providers worldwide. His ongoing role is to establish the strategic and business goals of the company, coordinate the implementation of those business goals and provide direct input in the development of new, innovative products.
Esmeralda Swartz is VP, Marketing Enterprise and Cloud, BUSS. She has spent 15 years as a marketing, product management, and business development technology executive bringing disruptive technologies and companies to market. Esmeralda was CMO of MetraTech, now part of Ericsson. At MetraTech, Esmeralda was responsible for go-to-market strategy and execution for enterprise and SaaS products, product management, business development and partner programs. Prior to MetraTech, Esmeralda was co-founder, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Lightwolf Technologies, a big data management startup. She was previously co-founder and Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development of Soapstone Networks, a developer of resource and service control software, now part of Extreme Networks.
Chad Jones is an entrepreneur, thought leader and venture investor across multiple industries. His unique vision takes big ideas from inception through execution resulting in highly profitable outcomes including six exits to companies such as Microsoft, VMware and Intel. He has over eighteen years' experience driving strategic initiatives for start-ups and F50 companies alike and has traveled the planet discussing a vision for a better world through technology.
He is currently the chief strategy officer at Deep Information Sciences, developing and driving product and go-to-market strategy as well as leading awareness efforts. In his previous role at LogMeIn, he drove product and go-to-market strategy for the company's Xively IoT platform and evangelized the company's vision for the Internet of Things. Prior to LogMeIn, he served as VP, Strategy and PM for DynamicOps (cloud automation software) acquired by VMware in 2012. Before DynamicOps, he was VP, Product Management with Neocleus (client hypervisor) acquired by Intel. Chad was a creator of SoftGrid (app virtualization) from Softricity, acquired by Microsoft, which grew to revenues topping $4.2B.
He also maintains his own investment fund named Plesso Ventures, Inc., providing strategic guidance as well as investing in great companies across multiple industries including technology, beer, wine, alternative energy, next generation concealed fastening systems, sporting goods and wireless electricity. He studied at the University of California, Irvine, holds two degrees, eight industry certifications and enjoys playing beach volleyball, wakeboarding, skiing fresh powder and trying to resist buying more wine.
Jill Steinhour is a Marketing Executive with 20 years of strategic business planning, marketing analytics, product management and delivery experience in the high-tech, bio-tech, and manufacturing industries.
Jill joined Adobe Systems in June 2011 as Director of High-Tech Strategy. In this capacity, she leads strategic engagements with Adobe's top tier clients in support of their efforts to develop B2C & B2B digital marketing strategies, which employ industry best practices and leverage interactive marketing technologies. She is also a contributor to Adobe thought leadership forums and frequent speaker at digital marketing conferences and high-tech and telco industry events.
Prior to joining Adobe Systems, Jill held leadership positions at HP, Agilent and IBM. She has expertise in market research and sizing, customer insights and predictive model development and business performance management strategies for consumer and commercial markets. During her tenure at HP, she directed efforts to integrate and extract intelligence from large and diverse data stores to deliver HP's first comprehensive data repositories that supported the development of addressable market and consumer predictive models.
