Five of the Best Programming Languages and Frameworks for a Small Business Choosing a programming framework for a small business can be overwhelming- there are so many. Here are a few of the best choices, to help you get started. Ask a room of ten developers which programming framework is the ‘best on the market,' and you're liable to receive ten different answers. Each developer will sing the praises of a different language, and each one will very probably feel that theirs is the only logical choice. The most confusing thing, though? Each and every one of those developers will be correct. Wait, what? I'll be blunt: there is no universal programming framework. The language your organization should work with - whether it's for web development, mobile development, or traditional development - depends entirely on your unique situation. The perfect choice for one busine... (more)

CWCS Managed Hosting Offers Unlimited Data Transfer (Bandwidth) on Cloud Servers

22nd November 2013 - CWCS Managed Hosting (www.cwcs.co.uk) has announced that it is offering unlimited data transfer (often referred to as bandwidth) with all its cloud server packages. This not only brings down the cost of CWCS cloud servers, but also means customers will no longer pay more if, for example, their website traffic unexpectedly increases. By choosing CWCS Managed Hosting, customers get fast, reliable and secure hosting with high quality technical support 24/7/365. CWCS cloud servers are now even more cost-effective because the removal of data transfer charges has lowered the prices, while at the same time removing any worry or concern about going over a particular limit or quota. Karl Mendez, Managing Director at CWCS commented "Not only does unlimited data transfer lower costs for anyone using our cloud servers, it takes away the worry if, for exampl... (more)

Azure CLI Day 53 – sql db list

In my previous post (http://thinkfirstcodelater.com/blog/?p=3540) I showed you how to create a SQL database using the Windows Azure cross platform command line tools. In this post I’ll show you how to use these tools to list your SQL database. Once again, just a reminder that I’m using the command line tools on a MacBook Air with OSX (Mavericks) installed, and I’m using Google Chrome as my default browser. However, the experience should be identical on Windows and Linux as well. Open an instance of your command line (Terminal, Bash, Command Prompt, etc.) and type the following: azure sql db list -h The azure sql db list commands lists SQL databases on a specific SQL server. In order to use the command you must provide the following parameters: serverName – the name of the SQL server you want to list databases for administratorLogin – the administrator login of th... The Dangers of Cloud Storage | @CloudExpo #BigData #SDN #DataCenter

Today nearly all of us have our information stored on the cloud. It's a very easy solution that allows users to seamlessly create back-ups of photos, contacts and other personal information, giving users access to their accounts anywhere from any device. Perhaps its most prized feature is that it has no storage limits, unlike mobile devices and PCs. There is, however, a downside to cloud services. Although it is useful in storing data, it could be the reason data is lost. Recently, the celebrity iCloud hack went to trial. The hacker admitted he acquired the credentials by spear phishing his victims and once he had them, all the data they stored on the cloud, whether intentionally or not, was exposed and later posted online. Many users are not aware of the different risks involved in using the cloud. It's easy to forget that it syncs automatically, storing data that wa... (more)

Qt DevDays 2009 - Munich

I have not blogged much about what I work with or do and that's on purpose.  Sometimes I am not allowed to tell and mostly I think you would not find it interesting.  However, I wanna share with you from Qt Developer Days #qtdd09 in Munich, which was an amazing event.   Not only is Qt a decent Developer tool for making desktop apps, but joining forces with Nokia, ex-Trolltech is getting far more traction as well. As a result of last week's devdays but also beta-release of Qt 4.6, one of my favorite online newsletter had this article last week.   But being at DevDays Europe is an amazing experience. Third year now for me and it keeps blowing my mind off.  This year an amazing 660 delegates + the 80+ Nokians that attended/helped out.   The DevDays often comes with some new stuff.  This year, the former Trolltech cheif engineer, Matthias Ettrich, launched QML in his ... Open Source Selenium Web Application Testing System

Selenium is a free Web Application Testing System. It gained lots of popularity since it is available. It’s integration to FireFox – which allows instant record/replay as well as the scripting option - makes it a great tool for functional web testing. BrowserMob on the other side leverages Selenium by providing an automated load-testing environment for Selenium scripts all configurable online via a Web Dashboard. Tagging Web Requests In my recent blog post – Get more out of functional web testing: How to correlate test reports with server side log information? – I discussed the problem that testing results are usually not linked to the log and diagnostics information captured by the application under test. The blog entry offered a way to link the two sides using HTTP Tagging via an HTTP Proxy. Tagging individual Web Requests allows linking each individual request ... (more)

Business Service Management: Aligning Business & IT

When Rick Berzle and Bill Keyworth asked me to join them to build a site on the topic of Business Service Management, I immediately said yes. The result is BSMReview.com, a site which seeks to analyze the best and next practices in business service management from a third-party point of view. The experts that Bill has brought to the site are literally a who's who of the best and most trusted people in the field: Peter Armstrong, Tom Bishop, Malcolm Fry, Israel Gat, Peter McGarahan, Richard Ptak, and Ken Turbitt. And that's just for the launch. Bill is recruiting more experts even as I write this. I'd like to get David Williams from Gartner and Jean-Pierre Garbani from Forrester involved as well, but they're behind the iron walls of the analyst-dom. Bill's thinking is that business service management covers a series of related topics. See his introduction - The Why &... (more)

Linuxcon Presentation – Open Source Toolchains for Cloud Computing

Here are my slides from today’s talk at LinuxCon on “Open Source Toolchains for Cloud Computing“. The talk focused on what open source tools could be used to create automation for managing cloud computing. I really enjoyed giving the talk and the discussion afterward, it seems that the reality among attendees was that they did very little to automate management but all had a great interest in doing so. I also enjoyed hearing from a Big 4 systems management user who said clearly that their multi-million dollar system didn’t appear to have the same capabilities as the free software solutions I mentioned. You know you need the cloud, but you’re hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You’re looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you’re concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.
For financial firms, the cloud is going to increasingly become a crucial part of dealing with customers over the next five years and beyond, particularly with the growing use and acceptance of virtual currencies. There are new data storage paradigms on the horizon that will deliver secure solutions for storing and moving sensitive financial data around the world without touching terrestrial networks. In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Cliff Beek, President of Cloud Constellation Corporation, w...
When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...

DevOps is often described as a combination of technology and culture. Without both, DevOps isn't complete. However, applying the culture to outdated technology is a recipe for disaster; as response times grow and connections between teams are delayed by technology, the culture will die. A Nutanix Enterprise Cloud has many benefits that provide the needed base for a true DevOps paradigm.
