Goldilocks, Serverless and DevOps: Five predictions for IT in 2017
Technological innovation drives every business, industry and sector - mostly
positively, but not always. 2016 was no exception - from the first long-haul
driverless cargo delivery to automated retail locations to the stiffening
competition among ‘smart assistants' we're seeing big technological leaps
at a breakneck pace.
At the same time, many of the enterprise trends of the last few years are
continuing, such as traditional businesses leading big digital transformation
and the move to public clouds, with the continued market dominance of
Amazon's $13B AWS business.
As 2016 draws to a close, it's time to once again consider how the IT
industry will grow, adapt, evolve and transform in the coming year, and to
consider what lies in store for 2017. Here, I set out my top five predictions
for what we c... (more)

How Software Is Eating the World of IoT
The many IoT deployments around the world are busy integrating smart devices
and sensors into their enterprise IT infrastructures. Yet all of this
technology - and there are an amazing number of choices - is of no use
without the software to gather, communicate, and analyze the new data flows.
Without software, there is no IT.

@WebRTCSummit Stories By Elizabeth White Video experiences should be unique and exciting! But that doesn’t mean you need to patch all the pieces yourself.
Users demand rich and engaging experiences and new ways to connect with you. But creating robust video applications at scale can be complicated, time-consuming and expensive. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Zohar Babin, Vice President of Platform, Ecosystem and Community at Kaltura, discussed how VPaaS enables you to move fast, creating scalable video experiences that reach your audience anywhere, in an enterprise grade secured environment, low-level video ingestion, processing, management, distribution, and playback. And experience microservices, the Big Data analytics to answer all your end-user consumption and behavior questions. Internet of @ThingsExpo, taking place June 6-8, 2017, at the Javits Center in New York City, New York, is co-located with 20th Cloud Expo and will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading industry players in the world. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the most profound change in personal and enterprise IT since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago. All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices - computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by 2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several decades. Jan. 5, 2017 01:45 PM EST Reads: 3,157 | By Liz McMillan WebRTC is bringing significant change to the communications landscape that will bridge the worlds of web and telephony, making the Internet the new standard for communications. Cloud9 took the road less traveled and used WebRTC to create a downloadable enterprise-grade communications platform that is changing the communication dynamic in the financial sector. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Leo Papadopoulos, CTO of Cloud9, discussed the importance of WebRTC and how it enables companies to focus on building intellectual property into their platforms that support customer needs, while also providing the performance, service, and support levels expected by Fortune 100 companies. Jan. 5, 2017 01:30 PM EST Reads: 3,873 | By Kevin Benedict The evolution of JavaScript and HTML 5 to support a genuine component based framework (Web Components) with the necessary tools to deliver something close to a native experience including genuine realtime networking (UDP using WebRTC). HTML5 is evolving to offer built in templating support, the ability to watch objects (which will speed up Angular) and Web Components (which offer Angular Directives). The native level support will offer a massive performance boost to frameworks having to fake all these features like Polymer and Angular. It will also encourage people who are not familiar with these next generational frameworks to get in on the action. As I am from a gaming background then I always complain that TCP (Web Sockets) is not genuinely real-time, so I look forward to seeing UDP (WebRTC) solutions being delivered like Desktop Sharing in Chrome 34. Jan. 5, 2017 06:00 AM EST Reads: 4,416 | By Rich DeFabritus There are some enterprise applications that were born to be in the cloud. Customer relationship management (CRM) applications were an early favorite because salespeople (the primary consumers of CRM) are decentralized and mobile. Web applications and personal data storage are also ideal cloud applications because they allow enterprises to scale up easily while driving down costs. Enterprises have held on to their communications, however, making it one of the last applications to move into the cloud. Jan. 5, 2017 04:45 AM EST Reads: 3,642 | By Pat Romanski While not quite mainstream yet, WebRTC is starting to gain ground with Carriers, Enterprises and Independent Software Vendors (ISV’s) alike. WebRTC makes it easy for developers to add audio and video communications into their applications by using Web browsers as their platform. But like any market, every customer engagement has unique requirements, as well as constraints. And of course, one size does not fit all.
In her session at WebRTC Summit, Dr. Natasha Tamaskar, Vice President, Head of Cloud and Mobile Strategy at GENBAND, will explore what is needed to take a real time communications engagement experience from a simple communication, to a truly immersive multi-layer engagement experience. Furthermore, she will explore the role of a Communications Platform as a Service (PaaS) in delivering this experience. Jan. 4, 2017 11:30 PM EST Reads: 5,490 | By Elizabeth White Fact is, enterprises have significant legacy voice infrastructure that’s costly to replace with pure IP solutions. How can we bring this analog infrastructure into our shiny new cloud applications? There are proven methods to bind both legacy voice applications and traditional PSTN audio into cloud-based applications and services at a carrier scale. Some of the most successful implementations leverage WebRTC, WebSockets, SIP and other open source technologies.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Dan Cunningham, CTO of ReadyTalk, covered real world examples of how enterprises and vendors alike can modernize infrastructure without ditching existing investments. Jan. 4, 2017 08:15 AM EST Reads: 2,464 | By Liz McMillan Big Data, cloud, analytics, contextual information, wearable tech, sensors, mobility, and WebRTC: together, these advances have created a perfect storm of technologies that are disrupting and transforming classic communications models and ecosystems. Jan. 2, 2017 11:30 PM EST Reads: 5,356 | By Liz McMillan We are reaching the end of the beginning with WebRTC, and real systems using this technology have begun to appear. One challenge that faces every WebRTC deployment (in some form or another) is identity management. For example, if you have an existing service – possibly built on a variety of different PaaS/SaaS offerings – and you want to add real-time communications you are faced with a challenge relating to user management, authentication, authorization, and validation. Service providers will want to use their existing identities, but these will have credentials already that are (hopefully) irreversibly encoded.
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Peter Dunkley, Technical Director at Acision, looked at how this identity problem can be solved and discussed ways to use existing web identities for real-time communication. Jan. 2, 2017 08:45 AM EST Reads: 4,958 |
