Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director and Open Source Specialist to Lend Expertise to Enable Personal Learning for All

LOS GATOS, Calif., Aug. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- OpenEd (www.OpenEd.io), the largest K-12 educational resource catalog, announced the addition of Lila Tretikov to its board of directors today. Tretikov will provide her expertise to assist OpenEd's mission to provide open source, modern teaching tools and resources to educators allowing them to create a personal learning experience for all students.

With more than 18 years of open source and programming experience, Tretikov began her career at Sun Microsystems before founding technology marketing company GrokDigital, and serving as Chief Information Officer for SugarCRM. In May 2014 Tretikov was appointed executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation; she has since been honored by Forbes magazine as one of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women."

"OpenEd is changing K12 education by helping teachers build curricula for today's students," said Lila Tretikov. "From videos and games to traditional media, OpenEd is delivering a uniquely tailored experience for every student, and a complete set of planning tools for every teacher. I am very excited of what this means to K12 education, and am looking forward to bringing my expertise to help change the future of learning."

OpenEd holds the largest K-12 educational resource catalog with the most Common Core aligned videos, games and assessments.  OpenEd's unique education recommendation engine determines just the right resource to use for any learning standard and any student. All of this is exposed open source with an open API now used by many edtech companies including BlendSpace, Themeefy and Knowmia.

"OpenEd is dedicated to embracing the changing landscape of education while providing truly open tools to help teachers and educators," said Adam Blum, CEO and co-founder of OpenEd. "As a true veteran in the Open Source space, a computer scientist, and the Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation, Lila's experience and advice is invaluable in OpenEd's mission."

OpenEd provides teachers and parents with a free, simple tool to find videos, games and assessments that enliven lesson plans and aid students in class or at home. In addition, OpenEd's new free assessment creation tool enables teachers to easily create assessments while associating resources to individual questions. Should a student miss a question on an assessment, OpenEd automatically recommends resources such as videos or games they can review to achieve mastery. The result is in effect the ability to effect a personalized learning plan for every student for the first time.

We're entering the post-smartphone era, where wearable gadgets from watches and fitness bands to glasses and health aids will power the next technological revolution. With mass adoption of wearable devices comes a new data ecosystem that must be protected. Wearables open new pathways that facilitate the tracking, sharing and storing of consumers’ personal health, location and daily activity data. Consumers have some idea of the data these devices capture, but most don’t realize how revealing and...
The increasing popularity of the Internet of Things necessitates that our physical and cognitive relationship with wearable technology will change rapidly in the near future. This advent means logging has become a thing of the past. Before, it was on us to track our own data, but now that data is automatically available. What does this mean for mHealth and the "connected" body? In her session at @ThingsExpo, Lisa Calkins, CEO and co-founder of Amadeus Consulting, will discuss the impact of wea...
The idea of comparing data in motion (at the sensor level) to data at rest (in a Big Data server warehouse) with predictive analytics in the cloud is very appealing to the industrial IoT sector. The problem Big Data vendors have, however, is access to that data in motion at the sensor location. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Scott Allen, CMO of FreeWave, will discuss how as IoT is increasingly adopted by industrial markets, there is going to be an increased demand for sensor data from the outer...
A critical component of any IoT project is the back-end systems that capture data from remote IoT devices and structure it in a way to answer useful questions. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle large data sets, but they are not well suited to many IoT-scale products and the need for real-time insights. At Fuze, we have developed a backend platform as part of our mobility-oriented cloud service that uses Big Data-based approache...
