DevOps in an Open and Heterogeneous World

Keeping pace with advancements in software delivery processes and tooling is taxing even for the most proficient organizations. Point tools, platforms, open source and the increasing adoption of private and public cloud services requires strong engineering rigor - all in the face of developer demands to use the tools of choice. As Agile has settled in as a mainstream practice, now DevOps has emerged as the next wave to improve software delivery speed and output. To make DevOps work, organizations must focus on what is most relevant to deliver value, reduce IT complexity, create more repeatable agile-based processes and leverage increasingly secure and stable, cloud-based infrastructure platforms.

Some mainstream IT buyers might think that most cloud infrastructure vendors and service providers are essentially alike. But there are key differences. Besides, given the body of market research to the contrary, there’s clearly no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" cloud solution. Furthermore, if you believe that a hybrid cloud should support an IT agenda to transform a business, then a viable solution must consider the preexisting systems of record within the enterprise. That’s why forward-thinking CIOs often seek information and guidance on two fronts. First, they want to know how to ext...
The age of digital disruption is upon us, as the last decade alone has proven in terms of technology and disruption with the progression of organizations like Uber, Airbnb, and Netflix. We are also on the brink of new disruptions in industry, including banking or payments, insurance, healthcare, construction, packaging, and many more. These not only come from startups disrupting a sector, but companies being able to shift from their existing focus areas to build on new opportunities. They’re driven internally or by creating a new spinoff company into additional areas.
With all the excellent training available on television today, we are all now well prepared to deal with the coming Zombie Apocalypse. Our failure as a society lies, however, in our misunderstanding of the nature of the cybersecurity challenge. This failure threatens us all and our survival will depend on society’s ability to deal with the evolution and maturation of the changing enterprise cybersecurity challenge. If you’re completely oblivious to the living dead threat, a zombie apocalypse refers to a widespread (usually global) rise of zombies hostile to human life. The zombies will en...
The newer Windows 10 devices with the Hello extensions are definitely going to have a cost implication, but in today’s context in our own consumer world where every individual has access to Smartphones with advanced biometric features, why should the enterprise user continue to use the old PCs that are managed by traditional passwords? I think the cost of transformation to these devices will be worth the efficiencies in the ITIL operations as well as improved security to enterprise data. It would be useful to collect data about OEMs who have Windows 10 PCs with Biometric Hello features and the...
Many IT organizations look to the private cloud to improve agility and simplify business operations. More and more are introducing converged and hyperconverged infrastructure solutions to support cloud initiatives and agile development practices. But there is too often a road block — legacy data center networks. Private clouds require a new multipurpose data center network to support diverse applications and workloads without sacrificing performance or service quality. Fully programmable and highly adaptable, the next-generation network easily integrates with service orchestration tools and...
Enabling patient-doctor trust goes a long way in a provider’s ability to provide care. Trust is also critical for enabling network connections that are safe, to help secure health networks. The healthcare industry is scrambling to shore up defenses as cyberattacks and breaches increase. The rapid adoption of electronic health records/electronic medical records (EHR/EMR) has created an attractive opportunity for cyber criminals. Ponemon Research recently reported that breach costs are $363 for each stolen healthcare record, and that is the highest across all vertical markets.
New forces are impacting the entire value chain of an enterprise. Availability of large amounts of digital data, automation of the production processes, inter-connectivity of the supply chains, and digitization of the customer experience is re-organizing entire industries leading to the transformation of business models. Let’s look at the some of the critical pieces of the value chain and see the impact of the new technologies.
It is impossible to go outside and not notice banks offering consumers new ways to save, send, spend, and access their money at a bank. This trend-to ease access to funds – extends well beyond the retail banking sector and is equally prevalent among investment banks, private banks, hedge funds, mutual funds, ETF's and just about any financial institution, large or small. It is arguably the single most compelling commercial driver in the financial services sector. Financial institutions compete aggressively and continuously for dominance in this regard and technology is, in all cases, is the si...
Adopting storage innovation protects the Nebraska Medical Center from data disruption and adds operational simplicity to complex data lifecycle management. To describe how more than 150 terabytes of data remain safe and sound, we're joined by Jeff Bergholz, Manager of Technical Systems at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The discussion is moderated by BriefingsDirect's Dana Gardner, Principal Analyst at Interarbor Solutions.
Has there ever been a better time to be in DevOps? TV shows like “Person of Interest” and “Mr. Robot” are getting better at showing what developers actually do, using chunks of working code. Movies like Michael Mann’s “Blackhat” (2015) won praise from Google’s security team for its DevOps accuracy in a few scenes. Look around and you’ll discover elements of DevOps culture filtering out into wider society, such as people in all walks of life discussing their uptime or fast approaching code lock.
Since cloud computing has made big leaps in the past few years by emerging as a conventional business tool, several strategies have consequently surfaced. These myths aren't necessarily as risky as they were initially presented to be, but they certainly affect our methods of approaching solutions in the cloud computing space.
When it comes to IT infrastructure, there are some big differences in the needs of the SMB vs the enterprise. What might be minor hiccups in the enterprise can be major challenges in the SMB. What are these differences and how should they affect the way solutions are provided?
The explosion of cloud onto the enterprise scene has, literally, revolutionized how businesses across the size spectrum do business, yet there’s a price tag tucked into this cloud’s silver lining that smart decision-makers should pay heed to. This is the era of what I like to call the consumerization of enterprise software. It’s bringing tremendous benefit to the business world, but it’s also bringing a great deal of change, particularly to the understanding of how business software adoption and use is done, and enterprises of all sizes need to familiarize themselves with best practices-under...
I was reading an interview with John Krafcik, CEO of Google’s Self-driving Car Project, in the August 8th issue of Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The article referenced a survey by AlixPartners where they found that 73% of people wanted autonomous vehicles. But when people had the option to have a steering wheel in the car, allowing optional full control to the driver, the acceptance rate jumped to 90%. This finding, that people are much more accepting of automation and new ideas when they have the option of control, is totally consistent with what we found with respect to how to deliver big data ...
While some existing apps allow the Doctors to write using their stylus pen, what is needed is an integrated solution that includes handwriting recognition, voice , face recognition and other cognitive intelligence as part of health care applications.
