Data is an unusual currency; it is not restricted by the same transactional limitations as money or people. In fact, the more that you leverage your data across multiple business use cases, the more valuable it becomes to the organization. And the same can be said about the organization’s analytics. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Bill Schmarzo, CTO for the Big Data Practice at EMC, will introduce a methodology for capturing, enriching and sharing data (and analytics) across the organization in a “as-a-service” cloud model, and discuss the role that the data lake plays in monetizing the ...
Throughout history, various leaders have risen up and tried to unify the world by conquest. Fortunately, none of their plans have succeeded. The world goes on just fine with each country ruling itself; no single ruler is necessary. That’s how it is with the container platform ecosystem, as well. There’s no need for one all-powerful, all-encompassing container platform. Think about any other technology sector out there – there are always multiple solutions in every space. The same goes for container technology. When you create something that is super scalable, the drawback is that it’s not goi...
Large enterprises today are juggling an enormous variety of network equipment. Business users are asking for specific network throughput guarantees when it comes to their critical applications, legal departments require compliance with mandated regulatory frameworks, and operations are asked to do more with shrinking budgets. All these requirements do not easily align with existing network architectures; hence, network operators are continuously faced with a slew of granular parameter change requests, trying to meet ongoing network requirement changes without having the proper tools in place.
Imagine if you will, a world where technology is changing at breakneck speeds. Where new technology hype seems to know no bounds. You see words floating in front of you. Cloud. Mobile. Big Data. Internet of Things. Machine Learning. Blockchain. The words fly towards you, circling. They seem to be saying something. ‘Use me’… “No, use me.’. Confusion seems to abound. At the sign post up ahead, your next stop, the Disruption Zone!
I was reading an interview with John Krafcik, CEO of Google’s Self-driving Car Project, in the August 8th issue of Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The article referenced a survey by AlixPartners where they found that 73% of people wanted autonomous vehicles. But when people had the option to have a steering wheel in the car, allowing optional full control to the driver, the acceptance rate jumped to 90%. This finding, that people are much more accepting of automation and new ideas when they have the option of control, is totally consistent with what we found with respect to how to deliver big data ...
SYS-CON Events announced today the Enterprise IoT Bootcamp, being held November 1-2, 2016, in conjunction with 19th Cloud Expo | @ThingsExpo at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. Combined with real-world scenarios and use cases, the Enterprise IoT Bootcamp is not just based on presentations but with hands-on demos and detailed walkthroughs. We will introduce you to a variety of real world use cases prototyped using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, Spark, and Intel Edison. You will get a thorough overview of enterprise cloud technologies such as AWS IoT, Azure IoT Suite, a...
The newer Windows 10 devices with the Hello extensions are definitely going to have a cost implication, but in today’s context in our own consumer world where every individual has access to Smartphones with advanced biometric features, why should the enterprise user continue to use the old PCs that are managed by traditional passwords? I think the cost of transformation to these devices will be worth the efficiencies in the ITIL operations as well as improved security to enterprise data. It would be useful to collect data about OEMs who have Windows 10 PCs with Biometric Hello features and the...
Enabling patient-doctor trust goes a long way in a provider’s ability to provide care. Trust is also critical for enabling network connections that are safe, to help secure health networks. The healthcare industry is scrambling to shore up defenses as cyberattacks and breaches increase. The rapid adoption of electronic health records/electronic medical records (EHR/EMR) has created an attractive opportunity for cyber criminals. Ponemon Research recently reported that breach costs are $363 for each stolen healthcare record, and that is the highest across all vertical markets.
About a year ago we tuned into “the need for speed” and how a concept like "serverless computing” was increasingly catering to this. We are now a year further and the term “serverless” is taking on unexpected proportions. With some even seeing it as the successor to cloud in general or at least as a successor to the clouds’ poorer cousin in terms of revenue, hype and adoption: PaaS. The question we need to ask is whether this constitutes an example of Hype Hopping: to effortlessly pivot to the next new thing once the previous one turns out to be just a bit less attractive and certainly a lot ...
Has there ever been a better time to be in DevOps? TV shows like “Person of Interest” and “Mr. Robot” are getting better at showing what developers actually do, using chunks of working code. Movies like Michael Mann’s “Blackhat” (2015) won praise from Google’s security team for its DevOps accuracy in a few scenes. Look around and you’ll discover elements of DevOps culture filtering out into wider society, such as people in all walks of life discussing their uptime or fast approaching code lock.
The next generation of platforms is here with options in both cloud and on premises hyperconverged infrastructure. How do real people in today's business world make the correct choices on where to move? As IT departments look to move beyond traditional virtualization into cloud and hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platforms, they have a lot to consider. There are many types of organizations with different IT needs and it is important to determine whether those needs align more cloud or HCI. Before I dig into the differences, let me go over the similarities.
Information technology is an industry that has always experienced change, and the dramatic change sweeping across the industry today could not be truthfully described as the first time we've seen such widespread change impacting customer investments. However, the rate of the change, and the potential outcomes from today's digital transformation has the distinct potential to separate the industry into two camps: Organizations that see the change coming, embrace it, and successful leverage it; and on the other side, organizations that will find themselves as roadkill on the technology highway.
SYS-CON Events announced today that China Unicom will exhibit at the 19th International Cloud Expo, which will take place on November 1–3, 2016, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd ("China Unicom") was officially established in 2009 on the basis of the merger of former China Netcom and former China Unicom. China Unicom mainly operates a full range of telecommunications services including mobile broadband (GSM, WCDMA, LTE FDD, TD-LTE), fixed-line broadband, ICT, data communications, domestic and international communicatio...
Enterprise IT has been in the era of Hybrid Cloud for some time now. But it seems most conversations about Hybrid are focused on integrating AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google ECM into existing on-premises systems. Where is all the Private Cloud? What do technology providers need to do to make their offerings more compelling? How should enterprise IT executives and buyers define their focus, needs, and roadmap, and communicate that clearly to the providers?
The Transparent Cloud-computing Consortium (abbreviation: T-Cloud Consortium) will conduct research activities into changes in the computing model as a result of collaboration between "device" and "cloud" and the creation of new value and markets through organic data processing High speed and high quality networks, and dramatic improvements in computer processing capabilities, have greatly changed the nature of applications and made the storing and processing of data on the network commonplace.
